I finally have the results of the COVID test, and they're negative. I don't know what I have, but it's officially not this particular disease.
I sent this to the e-mail list too, so hopefully most everyone will see it. I greatly appreciate Heritage, and post this not to be a burden, but so my brothers and sisters will know how to pray - for I know that y'all will pray. :) * * * * * I got word this morning that even though I still don't have a result from the COVID test (they must be running way behind), I need to go ahead and submit a leave of absence. So I've done that. The word we've had is that the company will pay those who are out because of this disease, but when I looked at the official Web site I found it very confusing. I've asked my supervisor some questions which ought to clarify things, and if it does turn out that I need to use my own time I've got tons of sick time available from before the company went to the PTO system (192 hours - almost five weeks!). I therefore don't anticipate any financial problems - whether I do or don't have the virus, if I'm not back to work in a month it'll be for something that'll require filing for disability. I do have a dry cough, shortness of breath, and fever, but not really bad, and not constantly. I'll feel completely fine for a while, then the fever will show up; or I'll be breathing normally, and suddenly while just sitting there I'll have to pant for a bit; or I'll be going on fine and then I'll cough for half an hour or so. It's been that way all week, and it doesn't seem to be getting worse. And it doesn't appear that my wife has it, though right now is the time of year her allergies really bother her, and that might be masking it if she does have it. Except for diabetes and arthritis she's disgustingly healthy, and probably if the virus tries to mess with her it'll die. :) I've had at least two members of the church offer to go shopping for us, and I really appreciate it. I did my regular shopping yesterday - with a mask on, and getting out of the store just as soon as I could (which I do anyway - loitering in stores I don't like) - so I'm fine for now. Come next week, if the results are positive when they finally come in, I'll avail myself of one of the gracious offers. Just so y'all know, I'm not scared. The odds against me catching it were pretty good, though I've concluded that I probably do have it. The odds of having any symptoms at all were good, though I am in fact having symptoms. The odds against it being a severe case are mighty good, and the survival rate is about 99.9% percent, and I'm not sure my odds of crossing the street safely are that good in Albuquerque. And besides all that, if I do die, I know Whom I have believed, and I'm persuaded that He will keep me until that day. As John Newton said, I'm not what I want to be or ought to be, but I'm not what I used to be, and by God's grace I am what I am - a child of God, who will one day, whether it's because of this disease or something else, open my eyes and see my Lord's face.
I just got off the phone with Optum (where do these names come from???!!!), and while they told me at the time of the test that the results would be back in 24-48 hours, the lady on the phone confirmed what I had suspected - they're backed up due to volume. There is a Web site I can check, so I did, and they don't have the results yet. They update at 0900 and 1800 daily (one presumes business days), so I can check again this evening. In the meantime the fever's still there, and while they're not constant, beginning yesterday I've had a dry cough (which is normal at work, not away away from work), tightness in my chest, and shortness of breath. I do have to go shopping, but I'll wear a bandana for others' protection, and I never spend more time in a store than I need to anyway. And then unless the results come back negative, I'll need to set things up so that employees do my shopping for me, and bring everything out to the car. I went to do it yesterday, but the Walmart I go to didn't have any slots available today, and until and unless I get negative results I need to keep to my regular schedule, so that if they do come back negative I don't have anything planned on a work day. I'm still waiting - which I can do like a pro. In the Air Force I learned how to hurry up and wait. :)
Just to let everyone know where I'm at (I'll send this out to the e-mail list too)... I've not had any worries about what I variously call the Wuhan flu or the ChiCom flu, because every piece of objective information I've seen shows that while it is easily transmissible, it doesn't kill any more people than the flu does - those who catch it have about a 99.9% chance of recovery, and if I had that good a chance of winning the lottery I'd buy a ticket, because it wouldn't be gambling. :D Howsomever, Saturday I came down sick, and I've been sick, off and on, ever since. The symptoms of this thing are so variable that while I don't have the sore throat and trouble breathing, I decided to get the test anyway, just to be sure one way or the other. So Monday morning I went and got it (it is enormously unpleasant), and they said they'd call within 24 to 48 hours. Well, they didn't call today, so I expect they will tomorrow. Meanwhile, just in case I do have it, I've called in Monday and today, and because I don't have the results yet, I just called in for tomorrow as well. If it turns out I don't have it, then I'll plan on going back to work Friday (I'm off on Thursday), and if I do, the company will give me two weeks off with pay to recover. I have to be honest - I half hope I do have it, because so far anyway the symptoms haven't been all that bad (though enough that my supervisor sent me home Saturday), and a two-week paid vacation that didn't use up my PTO would be nice. :) I'll try to remember to let y'all know how the test comes out.
Of course God's been working, and of course He planned everything from eternity, but isn't it neat how Benjamin Gonzalez was prepared for ordination as an elder just as Jeremy Menicucci was moving to Pennsylvania? And for that matter, isn't it neat how Jeremy was ready just as Brandon Trujillo moved to California? I really can't comprehend how people can witness such things, and not believe that God sovereignly acts in all our choices to accomplish His will. And I'm glad He does. :)

The second part of Heritage's Winter Mission's Project is a child sponsorship program. Sign-up's for the sponsorship program begin this coming Sunday, December 2nd. Sponsors are asked to donate $30 a month per child, and to commit for one year's time. As a sponsor, you'll receive four quarterly updates from your child(ren), an annual photo, and of course the opportunity to visit! Sign-ups will take place downstairs at HCF in the hallway! Look for the large ROM display filled with pictures. Contact the church office or Sarah Sloan with questions!
Members of Heritage! This coming Sunday will be the start of our Winter Mission's Project. Through the entire month of December the church office will be accepting donations towards a construction project that will allow handicap access for one of the children at the orphanage from the main house to the school. The grounds are currently made up of sand, and the incline from the house to the school makes it completely impossible for Cesar to travel without being pulled backwards in his wheelchair by other children or staff. The project is involved and will require a large amount of labor. Our goal is $5000, and we are currently at $1700. Please consider how you might give towards this ramp for Cesar, and bless Rivers of Mercy Children's Home. Please contact the church office or a member of the missions council with questions. One of the reasons I 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 Heritage is the depth of the preaching and teaching. I spent years and years in standard Baptist churches, where week after week - regardless of the text and subject - the sermon was nothing more than "here's how to be born again." Not only is that doctrinally unsound (you can't bring about your own new birth any more than you brought about your own first birth), but those who've already been saved need food on which to grow, and that sort of preaching doesn't provide it. I do grow at Heritage. There is, absolutely, a clear call to trust in the Lord Christ in every sermon. But the sheep don't starve here, as they do in so many congregations. I thank God for Heritage Christian Fellowship.
About a month ago I changed jobs again, this time to what the company calls a "member host." I'm at the self-checkout registers at Sam's Club, and since the store doesn't open until 7 AM, I don't have to start work on an opening shift until then. And since the store closes at 8:30, that's when I get off a closing shift (assuming that I can do the necessary cleaning and such by then, which so far has seldom happened - but still I've never gotten off later than 8:45 since starting this new job). And I think that I'll be able to start making it more or less regularly to Wednesday night services (the main obstacle being when I work a closing shift that night). I get off earlier, and go in later, so it'll be a lot easier to get sufficient sleep - and it'll be easier to get enough sleep after getting out of church on Wednesday. :)
After missing two Sundays - taking my wife to the airport, and picking her up at the airport - I am very eager to be there day after tomorrow. :)
A Facebook friend, and brother in Christ, Dennis Gundersen, will be in the early service tomorrow, and alas, I'll be at the airport picking up my wife. I know y'all will make him welcome. :)

Heritage Christian Fellowship is an independent reformed Bible church who gather under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Heritage Christian Fellowship is an independent reformed Bible church who gather under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We exist, as all things do, for the glory of God alone, and long to know Christ while being conformed to His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. In seeking to glorify and enjoy God, we are dedicated to proclaiming the Word of God, that we might exalt Christ through His Word and edify His body through expository verse by verse preaching and teaching. We stand united in the truths of Christ and covenant together to do as He has commanded. In the tradition of the Reformers and the doctrines of Grace, we seek to always be reforming and conforming to God’s will as taught in Holy Scripture. We as a people are bound together by the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in observing the ordinances set forth by Christ, and dedicating ourselves to prayer, devotion, joyful worship, discipline, and sound doctrine. We are committed to the fulfillment of the Great Commission, making disciples as Christ did, of people near and far. We desire to pass on a heritage to our children, teaching, reproving, correcting, and training them in righteousness according to the Word of God that they might delight in and glorify God. We long to fulfill our calling and use our gifts as the Lord has graciously granted unto each one, reaching out to others while growing in knowledge and holiness. And finally, we desire that our love for God abound and manifest itself with a passion to glorify Him in all that we do, and long to love our neighbor even as ourselves, and love one another as Christ has loved us.

Mission: And we proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, that we may present every man complete in Christ - (Colossians 1:28)

On April 20th of 2003, we hosted our first annual Resurrection Sunday breakfast (organized by Charissa Maxwell, now Menicucci). The breakfast has grown into a wonderful tradition for us at Heritage that we look forward to every year. This was the first Resurrection Day in 17 years that we have not been able to hold the breakfast.
Please help us look back on all the fond memories we've had over the years! Share your photos of past Resurrection Breakfasts in the comments below!

Why We Call the Worst Friday ‘Good’

"Never has Joseph’s banner flown so truly as it did on that day: what man meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20)."

desiringgod.org It was the single most horrible day in the history of the world. No incident has ever been more tragic, and no future event will ever match it.

[04/07/20]   "But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus." - Ephesians 2:4-7 NASB
