On Jan. 11 I mailed a check to you but it hasn't cleared. I hope you got it!
I just picked up my copy of Meditations of the Heart by Howard Thurman. I'm glad to have it on this day of turmoil in DC. Thanks, Jon, for quoting from his writings a few weeks ago and leading me to this collection, Praying for the safety and stability of our country.

Opening Prayer (adapt. John Wycliffe,1320-1384)
O Lord, from here on never leave us, but stay and dwell with us;
for your presence is our only comfort and consolation,
just as your absence is our only sorrow.
O Holy Spirit, come into our hearts, and draw us so near to God,
that the things of the world may be as nothing to us.
Inflame our hearts with your love,
and there let it burn without ceasing.
Come, we pray, for you are our true joy, our only desire,
and our sweetest love. Amen.

Scripture Readings Psalm 23, John 9:1-41

Verse 39 of the Gospel reading is fascinating to me.
Jesus says, “I came into this world for judgment,
so that those who do not see may see,
and those who do see may become blind.”
The disciples thought they could see clearly:
they see a blind person and assume sin
was somehow at the root of it (“who sinned,
this man or his parents?”).
How often do we assume the worst in one another?
How many times are we too quick to assign blame?
How frequently do we turn others into objects?
The disciples needed to lose their limited view of things,
and limiting view of others!
The Pharisees are similar. Confident they knew
and understood so much... their vision needed to shift.
Sadly, once again in this passage, the smug assurance
that the Pharisees knew the truth kept them
in the dark.
More important than physical sight, the man
who received healing had his spiritual eyes opened
to the person of Jesus Christ, and to the gift of belief.
What needs to change in the way you view things?
How have your inner eyes been opened to see Jesus?

A Prayer
O God,
when I find myself staring too hard
at the failings and faults of others,
may it be none other than Jesus
who gazes out through my eyes,
making me blind to the temptation to tear down.
Instead, may my spiritual eyes,
conformed to Jesus Christ by your grace,
take note of the beautiful things
that abound in every life around us.
Noticing these things,
may we never neglect to thank you for them,
for you and you alone are worthy of all praise.
Through Christ our Lord we pray, Amen.

Some of the ingredients for our regular Wed. breakfast are “currently unavailable,” so we’re bringing back “breakfast cereal day.” A little idealized childhood nostalgia can be a powerful thing. If you want to join us, we’re serving up breakfast and coffee in the FUMC fellowship hall until 9:30 this morning. Plus, there’s coffee cake!
