[01/13/16]   Not to be missed...
Thursday January 14, 2016
...For a couple of good reasons! First of all, this Thursday is the last Thursday Cohort Laurie will be with us. For any of you who don't realize it, Cohort Laurie Lewis is the reason FHJ exists. It was her vision of doing jazz-based "worship" out on Central Ave. that gave birth to Faith, Hope and Jazz three years ago at Mean Bao Bakery. But it has been her continued, ongoing faith in the concept and the community that we have continued on, despite setbacks and faltering support. If you enjoy the fellowship, the jam sessions, and the excellent quartets amidst an atmosphere of good food, drink, and friends, you have Cohort Laurie to thank for it. My hope is that Cohort Bob and I can carry it forward into 2016 and beyond. Please don't miss this Thursday as we celebrate our dear Cohort and friend Laurie Lewis as she departs for Denver! They are lucky to be getting her!

Also---as if that wasn't enough, this week we'll be switching it up as we hear from our good friends Micky Patten on guitar and Reed Easterwood on bass! Holding down the tempo will be FHJ newcomer drummer Fernando Garavito!

Coming up...
We've got vocalist Diane Richardson next week, followed by saxophonist Lee Taylor on the 28th! Another great month!

Another Celebration for Pastor Laurie
There will be a farewell party honoring Laurie on Sunday, January 17 at noon at Monte Vista Christian Church. This is our final farewell to someone who has been at Monte Vista for 10 years and has done so much for the church, the community, and for FHJ. PLEASE COME BY and celebrate with us! The church is at 3501 Campus Blvd., with the entrance to the parking lot at Grand and Berkeley. Party is directly through the main doors in the Fellowship Hall.

all in support of our dear friend Carla!!!

[01/04/16]   New year, new challenges
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce important news to the FHJ community. Cohort Laurie Lewis has resigned her position as Senior Pastor from Monte Vista Christian Church (our sponsor) and has accepted a call to a church in Denver. She will be leaving the area on Jan 17.

To be clear, Faith Hope and Jazz would not exist without Cohort Laurie; this whole thing grew out of her vision, her leadership, her determination and just plain "guts." In my 40+ years as a church musician, FHJ has been by far the coolest, most progressive thing I've ever seen a church do, and frankly, continuing without her seems almost inconceivable. Bon Voyage, dear Cohort. We will miss your enthusiasm, your courage, your warmth, your unwaivering belief in this experiment. We may never know all you have sacrificed for our existence.

Now, questions abound. For Cohort Bob and myself, how to continue without Laurie? Does the community have the collective will to make sure FHJ continues, and what will that look like? And how do we achieve that if the support from Monte Vista Church is no longer there? Only time will tell.

Until then...let the jazz play on...!!!

This week
It's a relative newcomer to FHJ---saxophonist Jesse Montijo along with drummer Arnaldo Acosta and bassist Colin Deuble as we kick off 2016!

Coming up
We're switching things up on 1/14 as we hear (ordinarily bassist) Micky Patten on guitar and (ordinarily guitarist) Reed Easterwood on bass! Then on 1/21 we hear from a newcomer to the area, Boston transplant vocalist Diane Richardson!

Remember...no matter what happens...

"WE ARE A PEOPLE OF FAITH, HOPE AND JAZZ"
For those of you who know what this means,
no explanation is necessary

See you this Thursday, Jan. 7

Can you believe it? It is time for our LAST gathering of 2015! Plan on coming this Thursday as we enjoy a mostly-holiday set of exquisite jazz vocals from Judy Christopher! And if that wasn't enough, she'll be joined by saxophonist Glenn Kostur, drummer Cal Haines and bassist Micky Patten!!! This is definitely not to be missed. If you are looking to catch the Christmas spirit don't miss this Thursday!

Two-Week Hiatus
Since next week is Christmas eve and the week after that is New Year's eve, we are breaking until Thursday, January 7...our next gathering for worship of the most unchurchy church in Albuquerque!

Thursday December 10, 2015
This week come down and enjoy the amazing Chris Buckholz on slide trombone (or as he might call it the sliding pitch approximator)! Joining him will be two of NM Philharmonic's finest, Mark Tatum on bass and Douglas Cardwell on drums! Don't miss this illustrious ensemble!

NEXT WEEK---OUR LAST FHJ FOR 2015!
Hard to believe we are at the end of another year! Helping us celebrate our holiday break will be jazz vocalist Judy Christopher and also special bonus guest Glenn Kostur! (Plus our good friends Micky Patten, Cal Haines, and of course Cohort Jim!) So plan on joining us for some ho-ho-holiday celebrating as we say good-bye to 2015!

THANK YOU
...to all of you for supporting Faith Hope and Jazz this year! We are so fortunate to have a diverse community of people built around the (one-way-or-another) religious experience called JAZZ! In the end it is all of you who make FHJ what it is. And thanks also to the wonderful wait staff at MVFS, for the great service and congeniality! What a fine gathering we enjoy each week.

[12/03/15]   Will be missing some sweet jazz and a sweet community this evening. In lieu of flash prayer we offer our sorrow and sense of loss for the victims of another selfish cowardly act. Peace begins on the inside. Love is the only response that heals.

[12/03/15]   Remember - NO Faith, Hope, and Jazz this week. Yes, yes, we miss you, too. See you next week.

[11/30/15]   FHJ Cancelled this Thursday
Thursday December 3, 2015
I apologize for the last minute change of plans for this Thursday. This afternoon Monte Vista Fire Station asked us to NOT do FHJ this Thursday due to Nob Hill Shop & Stroll.

After briefly considering having FHJ at the church, we instead decided to go ahead and cancel it this week. Flugelhornist Ron Helman will hopefully be re-featured probably in January or February, as well as drummer Jay Blea and bassist Dan Spanogle. We will continue on December 10 with the existing schedule---Chris Buckholz on trombone.

Sorry again, and see you all on the 10th!

Cohort Jim

[11/30/15]   A L E R T!! The owner of MVFS has cancelled FH&J for Thursday December 3, this week. They wish to observe Nob Hill Shop and Stroll. Let people know please.

It's been a difficult week for so many, but we try to provide what comfort we can.

Wishing all our Faith, Hope, & Jazz family a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday that is filled with food, friends, gratitude, and music! We are thankful to all of you who make our unchurchy church possible. We'll miss you - but we'll see you all on Dec. 3!

[11/23/15]   With a Grateful Heart
THANKSGIVING, 2015
Since there is no FHJ this Thursday, we hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday! Gratitude is often something we forget, especially when there seems to be so much turmoil in the world. Nonetheless it is our best friend when we seek solace and serenity. Don't forget your gratitude lists this Thanksgiving and always!

As we finish out the year...
Flugelhornist Ron Helman will join us on December 3, and trombonist Chris Buckholz is on for December 10! And then, an extra special Christmas treat for December 17 (our last FHJ for 2015)....but you'll have to wait to find that out! (I know that's mean of me right?)

Events at Monte Vista Church
Just a couple of little plugs for our sponsor: on Tuesday, November 24 there is a "Unity Service" of Thanksgiving at 7pm...an annual joint effort by Monte Vista, First Congregational, First Unitarian, and Congregation Albert. Ecumenism in action! Then on Sunday, November 29 there is the annual Hanging of the Greens event at 10:30am...Christmas carols, readings, and festivities! All are welcome.

Funding status
News: we are officially funded through at least June 2016, thanks to Monte Vista Church and to ALL OF YOU who were so generous during our "8-for-the-plate" campaign! THANK YOU!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
FHJ WILL RETURN ON DECEMBER 3, 2015

The Cohorts,
Laurie, Bob, Jim

[11/18/15]   Swing along with Lee!
Thursday November 19, 2015
...Tenor saxophonist Lee Taylor that is! For any of you who've heard Lee with the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra, no explanation is necessary! Come on down for some straight-ahead swing sax as well as one of our favorite bassists Micky Patten...and come check out a new-to-fhj drummer Josh English!

Thanksgiving Break
There will be no FHJ on Thursday November 26 (Thanksgiving).

Did you know...
That playing jazz reminds cohort Jim that we are all part of something far bigger than ourselves???

Last week of 8-for-the-plate!
This week concludes our 8-week fund drive for FHJ 2016....your last chance to help ensure our continuance! Help ensure great live jazz, great friends, great words from the cohorts Laurie and Bob, flash prayers, burgers & beer & all the other things we love about this unchurchy church! (Like non-judgemental open-minded inclusive welcome! Oh yeah, there's that too!)

[11/11/15]   Flute...in a jazz mode!
Thursday November 12, 2015
Once again we welcome as our featured soloist someone we've already enjoyed at the jazz jam! This week it's flautist Bonnie Schmader! (flautist = flutist! Don't ask why...!) Bonnie's rhythm section will include fhj-regulars bassist Rodney Bowe and drummer Will Hanley! And...cohort Jim will be back on the keys (and THANK YOU Dimi for running things last week!) so come one come all! I don't know about all of you, but I enjoy being back up front for the cool months! (Jessica, more room to dance!)

Next week...
It's the one and only Lee Taylor on tenor saxophone! Woo hoo!

Thanksgiving
There will be no FHJ on Thanksgiving eve. We will resume December 3!

8-for-the-plate countdown!
We have 2 more weeks in our fund-raising campaign to help fund FHJ for 2016! The basket has definitely been more full than usual, and some of you have been very generous, so thank you all for your support! Let's keep it going for two more weeks, and we'll let you all know how we did! Thank you for supporting the most unchurchy church in Albuquerque!

[11/02/15]   Guest Host this week!
Thursday November 5, 2015
Welcome back our favorite guest host guitarist Dimi Disanti! Dimi will be joined by old friends: Mike Olivola on bass, John Bartlit on drums, and Kanoa Kalihiweh on tenor saxophone! I only wish I could be at FHJ myself this week to witness the jazz musings of this combo! As for me, I will be at Outpost with the AJO and Hillary Smith, so if any of you have tickets to that it is possible to catch both events.

Next week...
It'll be Bonnie Schmader on jazz flute! We've heard Bonnie at the jam and next week she is a featured jazz artist for FHJ.

Commercials...
FYI the AJO (Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra!) is busy this month! Tuesday 11/3 at Cooperage on Lomas (free!) as well as Sunday 11/29 "Cool Yule" concert at the Kimo with Hillary Smith (free also, but reservations requested at nmjazz.org).

8 for the plate...
Thank you all for a generous October! We have three more weeks to show our support for continuing FHJ into 2016. So I ask you...what could be better than another year of jazz by the best artists in Albuquerque/Santa Fe, another year of flash prayers, cohorts, burgers, brews, and good friends? It's jazz church, the most un-churchy church in Albuquerque! Here's to ANOTHER YEAR!!! (Keep those gifts coming!)
