In November 2018, John Allen Chau's death was the subject of world news and sparked mostly negative reactions and intense antagonism towards the very idea of missions and Chau himself.

It takes a community to do this work. To start you in it, to keep you in it and to see you through to the end of it. And part of that community is the group of people and organizations here on social with us.

It's always been dangerous to take the gospel to the world and to the nations. There is incredible opposition. There is risk. There is suffering and persecution. Danger is an occupational hazard of taking the gospel to the ends of the earth. We need to prayerfully embrace the risks associated with doing radical gospel ministry. Churches that are unwilling to move towards danger for the sake of the Gospel are not going to be useful among the unreached because that's what it requires.

We naturally gravitate to the things in our sphere of influence. It's understandable. This is the world we live in: our neighborhood. And it requires a great amount of intentionality to care about people who are distant from you, who are not culturally like you. It doesn't naturally happen. We naturally just focus on ourselves. Again, it's how we are wired. So if we're going to be a part of a church that is embracing this cause to reach the nations, it doesn't just happen. It's the result of conscious decisions. We can be part of that historical ingathering of worshipers from all nations. We don't want to miss out. Again, we should be making disciples of our neighbors. Yes. But we can't stop there. And if we do, WE GUT THE MANDATE. It's not just about your neighbors. It's also about the nations.

Once again the refugee crisis flows in and out of the news and as most Americans absorbed the shock of the Taliban’s full takeover of Afghanistan… we, as Christians, should be asking ourselves, “How should we view this crisis and how should we respond?”

Do we need to explore how much of our understanding of the gospel is American and how much is Biblical?

While these episodes linked below were focused on the Syrian refugee crisis a few years ago, they are relevant to today’s crisis.

The Lord will make no mistake. Our God aims to be sought, found, known, and enjoyed by all the peoples of the world, and he oversees their travels to that end.

In his goodness, might God turn even the tragedy of forced migration into the triumph of future salvation?

Pastoring in the Midst of a Pandemic: An Interview with David Platt

How can we pastors keep "the main thing" the "main thing"?

The current pandemic presents a unique challenge for pastors. In addition to determining how best to serve their members in unusual circumstances, they must also decide how the pandemic and its economic fallout will affect the church’s mission. Unfortunately, global missions is one of the first budget items to be cut for many churches.

Though we don’t always get to see God’s work among the nations with our eyes, we must trust that He is still fulfilling His redemptive purposes, even among the hardest to reach places on earth. Pastors have an important role to play in terms of keeping these urgent realities before their people.

Listen in on this encouraging conversation with Jeff Lewis, Director of Discipleship with Radical and David Platt, pastor of McLean Bible Church in Washington, D.C. and founder/president of Radical.

The Good News About the Bad News: Encouragement and Exhortation for Troubling Times

Today, some argue that there is a hole in our gospel when we do not intentionally confront injustice and alleviate suffering when sharing it. Others contend that the church meets needs and does good deeds without proclaiming the gospel... it's like putting a bandaid on cancer. They say showing acts of mercy to suffering people while failing to share the message of Christ, is not mercy at all.

So, do we really care about human suffering if we overlook eternal human suffering? Conversely, when we share the Gospel without doing good to those in need, what does this say about our God?

Romans 15:20–21: “and thus I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, ‘Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.’”

“When it comes to missions in the church, the pastor either holds the key to the front door or holds the padlock.”

While members of a congregation can be a catalyst for missions envisioning, without the engagement of church leaders, mobilizing a church is tough sledding.

Even Missions Pastors and Missions Teams that operate without buy-in from key church leaders often struggle to build momentum. In most churches, until senior and lead pastors have embraced a missions vision for their churches, missions will likely remain in the margins.

Simply put, unless church leaders shed the spiritual blood that forging a world-changing vision requires, they probably won’t become champions of that vision. So how do we crack the code of pastoral engagement in missions?

Listen in as the tough questions are tackled in this past episode of "Cracking the Code for Pastoral Involvement in Missions"
