Action Days on Prison Reform!
American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Launches #FreeThemAll initiative, Days of Action, September 9-13, 2020.
In the United States, 2.3 million people are locked away in prisons, jails, and detention centers, where they are subject to civil and human rights violations and a lack of access to adequate health care. With the pandemic, the dangers of imprisonment have
multiplied exponentially, making every sentence a potential death sentence.
The American Friends Service Committee AFSC has long been a proponent of prison reform, building and supporting efforts both within and without to change this inhumane system in the country. “While we won’t be able to dismantle carceral systems overnight, there are concrete steps we can take to move us in the right
direction.” (AFSC)

Don't forget about Taco Thursday this week. We can't wait to see you there!!
Now that new care groups are starting up, I’m sure you’re thinking about what kinds of topics you might like to discuss. Everence has a series called “30 Days of Generosity” that is intended for use by small groups, but can also be used as a daily devotional on the topic of generosity. If anyone is interested, please let me know and I will make the resource available to you. – Leslie Kryder, Everence Advocate. P.S. I don't check Facebook real often, so please email or call me.
Fortunately antibiotics are making quick work of my strep throat, but I'm working on Thursday so I won't be able to organize Taco Thursday. Next week Michelle and I will both be gone for SA Leaders retreat. So we are planning to resume Taco Thursday February 14th unless someone else would like to organize things.
We look forward to starting back up though and hope we can get a good crowd coming in for food and fellowship.
Glamping opportunity: Daniel and I are looking for someone to stay in our home from now until August 23rd. The house is only partly furnished-utilities are on but there’s no WiFi. There’s some furniture (loveseat, desk, table, chairs, towels) but no bed, kitchen stuff or microwave. Please send a PM to me if you’re interested. Thanks!
Does anyone from church have/sell chicken eggs?
Watch for events and posts on our Watershed Way page. Feel free to share.
Hey ABQ folks, check out at the big Saturday morning sale on 1300 Girard NE between Constitution and Indian School. All proceeds benefit our young service volunteers who have donated 9 months of their lives to serving the wider Albuquerque community.
Can you post information about the watershed event that was mentioned in the service this morning? Thank you.

Despite the smoke in the atmosphere we managed to have a great time together this morning at Burton Park—Blessing of the Backpacks, saying farewell to Tyler S. and enjoying Eric McEuen’s musical contribution.

[07/29/21]   A prayer request from Gwenyth Lewis: The McCallisters were part of Reba Place community in Chicago and had explored relocating to New Mexico before deciding to move to Little Rock.

Second “in the house” gathering of the new era…

[07/13/21]   Posting for the DDofD Coalition...

Mennonite Coalition to Dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery is working with the Apache Stronghold to Save Oak Flat Act H.R.1884. This is a bill to protect this sensitive area threatened by mining. Elder Wendsler Nosie, of the Chiricahua Apache, has returned to his ancestral lands to camp and protect the land. He says that the House may vote as soon as July 23.

Our new Representative who took Deb Haaland’s seat, Melanie Stansbury, is not yet a cosigner on the bill which Halaand supported. She is our new Representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district, Official Website 202-225-6316. We need her! Please call today to save this important watershed and sacred ancestral lands for the Apache as we continue to face an ongoing mega drought

We will prevail!

During the Covid-19 pandemic that began in the US in 2020, there was a surge of violence against Asian Americans and people of Asian ethnicity living in the United States, in the form of verbal, physical, and economic attacks, and civil rights violations. Political and social rhetoric and polarization played roles in these increased incidents, but what role did theological or spiritual beliefs play in shaping or supporting anti-Asian violence?

This workshop examines the ways in which theology has been a part of the systemic marginalization that Asian Americans experience, including supporting campaigns of US imperialism and militarism that take place in Asia and in communities in the United States. Schwartz will also show how Christian theology helped to give power to intersectional movements for justice that fight anti-Asian violence.

Rev. Dr. B. Yuki Schwartz (she/they) is an associate professor of constructive and political theologies and a Louisville Institute Postdoctoral Scholar, 2020-22, at Claremont School of Theology at Willamette University, and an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. Her research explores the connections between Christian theologies, systemic oppressions, and justice movements related to Asian and Asian American histories, politics, and culture.

This event is cosponsored by Mennonite Church USA, ReconciliAsian, and Roots of Justice.

Unfulfilled: A Reaction to the Chauvin Guilty Verdict | Mennonite Church USA

From MC USA Executive Director, Glen Guyton.

Unfulfilled: A Reaction to the Chauvin Guilty Verdict | Mennonite Church USA Numbness was my reaction to the verdict in the George Floyd murder case. Maybe there was a moment of jubilation mixed with disbelief as the three guilty verdicts were read. What can I add to the conversation that has not already been said? Let’s be clear, like the Obamas said in their statement, ....

mid Rio Grande Times | A monthly resource encouraging stewardship of our watershed Native Plants Posted on February 28, 2021 by collaborators Reply It’s nearly Spring! We are looking around and thinking about planting, but what will require little water and tolerate heat in this Chihuahuan Desert? Think native grasses. Not only will they fulfill the requirement for little water ...

From the "About Us" section of the soon-to-be-launched "mid Rio Grande Times" online 'zine:

"A group of people calling ourselves the Watershed Way and living along the mid Rio Grande, have started this interactive magazine to encourage us to become better stewards of our land, water, plants and wildlife. We began meeting eight years ago after a weekend community-wide conference on the importance of knowing our watershed. We have continued as part of the social action 'leaf' of the Albuquerque Mennonite Church. As we explore our current reality, we ask ourselves, ‘How will we act to live more sustainably as individuals in our larger community?'

"What we are faced with is “the little picture” of our own mid Rio Grande Watershed and the “big picture” of climate change. Since we are not well connected to the geopolitical network, we can at least locally enhance the quality of life for our ecosystem.'
