Los Altos Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Wayne Hammar, Tres Rios Area Moderator, invites everyone to attend a listening conference to be hosted by West Mesa Christian Church on Saturday, February 9th. The session starts at 2:00 PM and should last 1½ to 2 hours. The purpose of this listening conference is to gain input from Albuquerque Disciples as to how people feel the Tres Rios Area should plan to proceed into the Regional Restructure program. The more people and input the Tres Rios Area can have on this subject, the better able our Area will be to respond to the desires of people and churches in the Area to live into this new structure for the region. This includes any questions you might have about the restructure plan.
Looks like a wonderful celebration. Hope you do it again.
Looks like a wonderful celebration. I hope you do it again.
Do You Want To Be Excited and Thrilled Or Fed and Satisfied? When we come to Galatians Chapter 5 and verse 1, we read further and deeper about our freedom in Christ. This is basically what Paul has been wrestling with in this profound, if not exciting, letter. Some people like to be excited and thrilled when it comes to the Christian Faith - all the time - but there is a need for being serious and profound and biblically sound. Those who like simply to receive the bread can disappear when there is no more bread. We learned some weeks ago in John Chapter 6 that Jesus is the bread. What a day to preaching and teaching on freedom - when so many people look for freedom and peace - but we are reading of that freedom which comes from Jesus Christ - and speaking of that peace which comes only from Jesus Christ. We can experience this - even when sadness seeks to imprison us - or when demons attempt to enslave us - or when men try to limit or restrain us. "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Jesus does not set us free so that we will become slaves to surrounding situations. Jesus does not set us free for us only to revert back to norm - to weak and miserable principles, and religious rules and regulations. Freedom is one of the hardest things to get - and one of the easiest things to lose! The world is crying out for freedom - I want to be free to do what I like. That is not freedom - that is slavery. Many want freedom of speech - freedom of thought - freedom to express ourselves - freedom from want - freedom from poverty or financial restraints - freedom from ignorance - freedom for political action - and even freedom from GOD! Jesus enjoyed perfect freedom - and yet He says - "the Father who sent Me commanded Me what to say and how to say it" – John Chapter 12 verse 49. What to say and how to say it - "I know what You want Me to say to those people, but Father show Me how You want it said. What is the tone to be? How is it to sound?" That is perfect freedom - when our liberty is under the total control of our gracious and loving God - and the Power of the Holy Spirit. Real freedom - is not to do what I want - but to be set free from "me" - to be set free from SELF - to do what Jesus wants me to do. We can be in chains to self - but Jesus sets us free - releases us - delivers us - to be what God would have us be. In Galatians, Paul is arguing for and pleading for the integrity of the gospel of Jesus Christ - the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Saviour, the Redeemer, the Lord, the King. That reminds us of the uniqueness of Jesus Christ. Speaking of the uniqueness of Jesus Christ in these present times is becoming increasingly dangerous. It was in the first Century, and it is becoming more so in the twenty first Century. How do you stand with regard to the reality? "Almighty God, our loving heavenly Father, help us to stand firm and strong in these days, when there are pressures and stresses to compromise, and give in here and give in there." Amen. The Thursday Night Bible Study group read the crucifixion story from all four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) last night and compared the contents of each with much discussion and fellowship. WOW, what an eye opener.

The Last Supper

On this Maundy Thursday, I encourage you all to watch this short Youtube video clip, a dramatic interpretation of the "Last Supper". Meditate on the spirituality and significance to communion.

Keep Your Distance!

[04/06/20]   Good Day My Brothers & Sisters,

Yesterday was the commencement of Holy Week, five days that hold special significance for all Christians. Here's how:

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem to participate in the Passover. This was the beginning of the end of his human life. Jesus entered the city by way of the east gate, (AKA Golden Gate or Gate of Mercy). It is believed Jesus will enter through this gate upon his second coming. Please read Ezekiel 44:1-3 This is why the gate is still locked to this day.

This Thursday will be Maundy Thursday, in remembrance of the Last Supper, during which Jesus shared what we know today as communion with his disciples; a vital element for all Christians. In some traditions, Maundy Thursday is celebrated with a basic Mediterranean meal accompanied by the washing of feet. In Jesus' day, feet-washing was done by a servant, and he did so to show the importance of servanthood.

The next day is Good Friday. This is the day Jesus suffered denial, severe punishment, public humiliation, and false accusations. What's "good" about this you may ask? Good Friday is the day Jesus set us free from the bondage of sin. He took upon himself the sins of the world and offered Himself as the sacrifice on the cross. As believers in Christ, we too shall experience these things as we take up our cross and follow Jesus, leaving sin behind.

Saturday is traditionally the end of Lent, our 40-day journey of deep reflection. On this day, Jesus’ body was placed in a nearby tomb, and a large stone was placed in front of the entrance with guards standing watch outside.

The following day, Easter Sunday is the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection. According to the Gospels, on the third day after his crucifixion, Jesus is raised from the dead, defeating death/sin. Christians around the world celebrate the Risen Lord, for it is because of his defeat of sin that we are assured of salvation and eternal life!

On a side note: isn't it funny how the secular world commemorates Easter with Easter eggs and candy and has very little connection if any with Christianity? To me, it is a metaphor of the soul looking for Jesus to fill the void within us all.

As you can see being Christian is not easy nor is it for everyone, for if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

Happy Holy Week,

Anthony P. Lopez

Be Holy in all that you DO!

Live for the LORD

[03/31/20]   Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:1-4 that we are to move beyond our childlike folly. Let us read what Paul's teaching was saying:

· 3 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? 4 For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings?

This time is a wonderful opportunity for us to move beyond being carnally-minded, a time for spiritual growth. This is a time to fully embrace the meal the Lord has to offer for us. In the name of Jesus Amen!

Video Sermon ~ Sunday, March 22, 2020

[03/20/20]   Please, consider your safety and that of others, only going out when necessary. There are still far too many people who are complacent and not heeding our government's advice. We still have not seen the potential impact of COVID-19 in our state.

The bible tells us in Proverbs 19:20 Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

Let us be wise and look out for each other.

[03/19/20]   These are the times that call for, "patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus". Revelation 14:12

[03/18/20]   Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As your pastor, I want you to know I realize and understand we are facing some unusual circumstances and challenges in our world, country, and community. Many of these obstacles are out of our control, but we know that our God/Jesus is in control and that our government is doing all that they can to mitigate the Covid-19 crisis. I believe we must do our part in trying to contain the spread of the virus, but I also believe we have "nothing to fear but fear itself" as Franklin D. Roosevelt put it! We must put our trust and hope in God.

I ask you to take this opportunity to draw close to the Lord and give Him thanks above all else. I encourage you to write a letter or call someone you love or haven't thought about for some time, read a book, or complete some of those unfinished projects that you never quite had the time to complete.

To bring you some comfort in these trying times, I've noted a few biblical verses below. Please take a little time out of your day to meditate on the word, seeking God's counsel and guidance. I had a coffee mug that read "the universe is unfolding exactly as it should". The world is no longer about 'ME' or 'I' but about 'WE' and 'US'. We are all in this together and together we can make a difference. And know that I am praying for you all!

Isaiah 41:10
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Psalm 46:1
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

1 John 4:18
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The One who fears is not made perfect in love.”

Psalm 27:1
“The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”
