Global Big Day - eBird

WBU Community:
This last devotional is a follow-up to what you’ve heard so far, keeping with the theme of Creation Care where we live in our back yard.

“The Remotest Parts of the Earth”
By Andrew Kasner

“…and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.” Acts 1:8b NASB (emphasis by me)

Evangelism is just as necessary in our neighborhoods as it is globally. The mission field that you have the most influence on is immediately around you. We each have a “sphere of influence” – the people closest to us and those whom we engage directly at work, school, etc. You have a unique relationship with those folks that give you influence, and because of this you may be the most effective person in sharing the Gospel and exemplifying God’s love. For you, they are the “remotest parts of the earth”, because no one else has the influence that you have.

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it.” Genesis 2:15 NASB (emphasis by me)

The same is true for your backyard (or front yard). It may be tiny or large, and the climate in your region may be cool, hot, humid, dry, etc., but no one else has the access to it or the influence on it that you possess – it’s a remote place. In Genesis, when God tells Adam to “cultivate and keep” the garden, the original language uses the words “abad and shamar”. These do imply human dominion over the land, but in a loving and caring nature. “Abad” means “to serve” and “shamar” means to care for, and both of these words in the original language were understood to be in the context of what one would expect from a “good and godly king”. To nurture (rather than exploit) and to sustain (rather than diminish). The same word is used in the verse the many are familiar with in Joshua 24:15 – “As for me and my house, we will abad the Lord.”

The bird in this photo is a Painted Bunting, and believe it or not, it occurs in many places in the continental U.S. as a summer resident or migrant. This photo was generously shared by Wayland alum Rosie Loya, taken by her 10-yr-old grandson Gideon Rodriguez in her back yard in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. My student, Morgan Bennett, has been doing field research on this bird just outside Plainview. It is one of many birds (but definitely unique in its beauty) and other species, such as butterflies, that can bring surprising beauty to the experience we have in our yard. Not only can we see the beauty of God in this, but we can have a part in caring for this little remote part of Creation. We can provide food and shelter in our yard, no matter where we live, and can do so with the attitude expressed in Genesis 2:15. I have provided some links below with information of feeding birds and butterflies in our yard. This can become an extravagant effort for some. In fact, you can even get involved in larger efforts like the upcoming “Global Big Day” (https://ebird.org/globalbigday), where you can participate by sharing the list of birds you see in your yard that day. There are lots of mobile phone apps now that help you identify birds and butterflies, and many of them are free. There are many such opportunities in which to participate. I leave you with a link to a video shared by Dr. Herb Grover (you heard from him on Wednesday) about a “citizen science” project he is involved with in Colorado monitoring birds: https://youtu.be/mfBiFN0gR6A
Be blessed and enjoy your “remotest part of the earth”!
