Mask update

Statement from Council (text) and encouragement from Pastor (video)

Members of Shepherd Lutheran Church.

In keeping with the Lord’s word and example, the council unanimously decided that we will abide by the latest NM Public Health Order requiring masks to be worn while indoors. We understand that some members may refuse to wear a mask and we encourage those members to join us online for worship. If you arrive at church and find that you have forgotten your mask or need a mask we will once again have masks available. We appreciate and thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you desire to express your opinion on the decision, please reach out to myself, a council member, or an elder.

In Christ,

Michael Jessee

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

We are starting in-person Sunday School today! For this week's lesson, we look at Judges Chapter 4 and study Deborah's victory over Sisera. We learn to trust God, even when it might not make "worldly" sense.

Christ Our Redeemer made a video to go over the same content we will learn in class.

"THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT"

There is no Sunday School video this week to prepare for the start of in-person Sunday School next Sunday, but there is a song! There's No Doubt About It" is based on John 20:29 where Jesus tells "doubting Thomas," "Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Enjoy and see you next Sunday!

For the next 6 weeks we will be following the journey of the apostles through the book of Acts. Following Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven the apostles had a lot of work to do. The work first started in full on the day of Pentecost.

However, the message of Christ crucified was already taking root in these 11 men before Pentecost. They called one more to join them in the fold of the apostles. They knew that there was a powerful name that they felt compelled to share with the world. That name? The wonderful name of Jesus. So for the next 6 weeks we follow their journey and see what The Name of Jesus does for the world. Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” So let us focus on this Name and see how this Name leads us to share the good news of a crucified, died, risen, and ascended Lord.

Join us for worship the next six weeks to see how The Name of Jesus: Heals (4/11), Saves (4/18), Emboldens (4,25) Offends (5/2), Delivers (5/9), and Converts (5/16).

At 1 and 6 PM (livestreamed at 6) we will celebrate Good Friday. We will meditate on the words written by the gospel writers. They recorded the events of Jesus' crucifixion and all that led up to it. An almost full account of the events that took place on that first Good Friday will be recounted in our service today.

We invite all to come and Behold, the Man who was lifted up to take away the sins of the world.

SPECIAL NOTE: As you join us for this solemn service, we're asking worshipers to enter and exit the sanctuary in quiet reflection, to soak in and meditate on the meaning of Good Friday. (We would love to chat and laugh with you again on Easter Sunday!)

This evening, we will celebrate Maundy Thursday. The day (also known as Holy Thursday) is set aside to commemorate the command that Jesus gave to his disciples during his final Passover. He gave his disciples many commands throughout his life, but this one is something we remember often. Jesus instituted a new command and a new covenant on his final Thursday on earth.

The new command? To love one another as he has loved us. Jesus washed his disciples' feet because he loves his own to such an extent that he serves us faithfully and lovingly.

The new covenant? Forgiveness through the blood of Christ, in the Sacrament of Holy Communion. His body and blood have been given to us in the bread and wine so that we might have a physical, personal reminder that Jesus' life was given and his blood shed so that we can live forever with him in heaven.

Tonight we celebrate both of these new mandates Jesus has given. God be praised for his great acts of love through which he has redeemed us from sin, death, and the devil's power.

Join us for worship this evening at 6PM to taste and see that the Lord is good.

Today we find the children of Israel near the border of Canaan, the land the Lord had long promised to give them. So close! Nothing could stop them now! ...Except a lack of trust in the Lord. Yes, even after all He had done for them, after all they had seen from Him. They trust what they see (Strong people! Strong cities!) over what the Lord promised them (I will GIVE you this land!). What we want to learn anew today is that God Is Worthy of Our Trust. Our verse for today reminds us that "BLESSED is the one who trusts in the Lord." (Jeremiah 17:7) Our song for today comes straight from the hymnal: "I Am Trusting You Lord Jesus" speaks of the peace and blessing of simple childlike faith in the Lord and in what He says.

Today at 6:00 PM (both in person and online) we will observe Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent. Lent is a time for sinners to see their deep need for a Savior by remembering two things: sin and repentance.
Sin is easily understood as "missing the mark." We have missed the mark of God's holy law and as a result deserve eternal death.
Repentance is easily understood as "doing a 180." Being told about our sin, being told about what happens to those who fail God's law, we pray as the tax collector in our gospel lesson this evening will say, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Repentance isn't just seeing our sin and pleading for mercy, it's also living in the forgiveness Christ has won for us. In our Lenten journey this year, let us ask our God to move us, by his great mercy, to live in the forgiveness Christ has won for us.
Come and join us for a message of peace won for us by Christ!
