Calvary Singles Fellowship

Phil. 3:13-14: Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet, but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ.

Help Him as I Help You

Do you understand the implications in Genesis 2:18?

And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Drawing from Genesis 2:18-25, Dillow summarizes God?s prompting: As I come alongside you as your Helper, I ask you to come alongside your husband?? Now my role as wife had greater meaning. 05/02/2014

Roman 5:6-9
For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 04/08/2014

The Reason You're Not Married (Might Be Looking You in the Mirror)

"To my credit, my top requirement for my imaginary wife was that she has a deep understanding of God's grace — which was nice, but it was horribly ironic in that I had very little grace for women who didn't meet my other specifications. For example, I wanted my wife to look gorgeous, love exercising, enjoy being outdoors, get my sense of humor, want multiple children, and challenge me (but only in the most respectful way). Oh, and one more thing: I did not want a woman who showed signs of insecurity or neediness. And believe it or not, I was surprised to find that this woman did not seem to exist — but I sure wasn't about to give up on finding her.

What was even more disappointing was when I met women who had potential but turned out to be just as picky as I was. As I later learned, those women had a laundry list of requirements that was just as unrealistic as mine." If you wonder why nobody seems to be the right fit, maybe it's time to ask what you expect in a spouse and how realistically you're assessing yourself.

Unrealistic Expectations? Ask Joy

What are some unrealistic expectations women have of men?
What expectations are realistic, and which ones should women be willing to drop?

In this Ask Joy, Emerson and Joy talk about ways to approach personal expectations of relationships and emphasize the importance of defining what your specif...

[03/14/14]   Hey Singles!

Money is a major topic with God. In fact the Bible offers 500 verses on prayer, fewer than 500 verses on faith, and more than 2,000 verses on money. 15 percent of what Jesus taught was on the topic of money and possessions — more than His teachings on heaven and hell combined. So come join us tonight as we cover this topic at the Cove, 7pm, to see what God might want to tell you about this topic!

Romans 13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

[03/07/14]   Hey Singles!

Have a question? What about something you'd like biblical guidance on? Then make sure to attend tonight's Q&A with Pastor Kerry Rose, 7pm at the Cove. And if you don't have a question yet, now is a good time to start thinking of one. We could always use godly advice!

Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.

[03/03/14]   Sometimes people create a sort of checklist for who they want to marry. Mental attributes, emotional attributes, physical attributes, socioeconomic background, etc...

But what about creating a checklist yourself- for who you need to be as a spouse?

Valentine's Day Movie: The Princess Bride

Happy Valetine’s Day!

As singles, today can be a rough. But remember Matt 14 - it was only when Peter tooks his focus off Jesus and focused on his circumstances that he began to sink. Do not let yourself sink into despair, but rather keep your eyes on Christ! For whom better to look to to be our own Valentines but the One who loves us best?

Songs 2:16
My beloved is mine, and I am his.
He feeds his flock among the lilies.

Today we are meeting at Frontier (across from UNM) at 6:30p, then we’ll be heading over to Lobo Theater to watch Calvary Nob Hill’s showing of The Princess Bride.

We’d *love* to see you there! Come to Calvary Nob Hill in the Lobo Theater on Friday, February 14, at 8 pm for a free showing of The Princess Bride! This beloved classic fairy tale about the adventures of Buttercup and Westley has everything—"Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love....

[02/07/14]   TGIF! Hope to see you all tonight, 7pm at the Cove!

God bless and hope to see you all tonight! 01/15/2014

A Tale of Two Brains Part 1

Good morning Singles!

If you enjoyed Daniel’s topic this past Friday on gender differences, here’s more on the subject.

Whether you’re looking for something educational or entertaining, this is definitely worth a listen:

Hope to see you all back at the Cove this Friday! Relationship Education 01/07/2014

What if Your Soul Mate Doesn’t Exist?

Do you treat God's Will like a scavenger hunt?

Gary Thomas believes the idea of soul mates can actually be a destructive concept. In a recent Family Life Today broadcast he said:

"I believe the notion that we have to find ‘the one’ is one of the most destructive and unhelpful beliefs that Christian singles have today. I think it leads to more foolish choices than it leads to wise choices. . . . particularly, when I don’t see any scriptural evidence for it—when I have to go back to Plato and The Symposium to even seen this modern notion of a soul mate.” Six months into my relationship with Josh, I began to feel some intense angst. I struggled knowing for certain if he was “the one.”

[01/03/14]   Happy New Year Singles! Hope you’re all looking forward to this year with hope!

Isaiah 43:18-21
“Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.
The beast of the field will honor Me,
The jackals and the ostriches,
Because I give waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My people, My chosen.
This people I have formed for Myself;
They shall declare My praise.

Speaking of things to look forward to, tonight is a food and fellowship night at Village Inn (6300 San Mateo Blvd NE) at 7pm.

Hope to see you all then!

[12/27/13]   Good afternoon Singles! Today we will be serving dinner and cleaning up at Joy Junction (4500 2nd Street SW) at 4:15. Make sure you are not late or you may not be able to join us, so make sure to give yourself enough time to get there and turn in your paperwork. If you do NOT have your paperwork filled out and with you, show up at least 15 minutes early so as to not hold up the staff at Joy Junction. And make sure you don’t forget to bring your photo ID.

And if you are able, Joy Junction is in need of diaper donations from sizes 4-5.

Then for New Year’s Eve, join us at our leader's home (Daniel Banker), 7:00pm. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share with others (main dishes will be provided). Join us as we bring in the New Year with prayer, a short message, and great fellowship.

Proverbs 22:9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor.

[12/20/13]   Good morning Singles! It’s another blessed day!

Join us tonight as we spread the joy of Christ, 5:30pm, at the Good Samaritan Monzano del Sol Nursing Home (5201 Roma Ave, south and west of Lomas and San Mateo) to visit with residents and sing some Christmas carols.

And if you’re looking for another opportunity to serve, Calvary is asking for help on December 24th, 10am, to assist with setting up luminarias. If you are able to help (even if you can’t make it right at 10), please let us know!

Psalm 100:1-2
Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands!
Serve the LORD with gladness;
Come before His presence with singing.

[12/13/13]   Hey Singles, looking for something to do tonight?

Come join us at 6:30p tonight as we meet up at the Fellowship Christian Reformed church (4800 Indian School Road NE, just west of San Mateo) and choose which group you'd like to go with.

Some of us will be going to the Bio Park for the River of Lights ($10 for adults, $5 for kids), while others will be going to the movies (movie/s to be decided among the groups).

After we will be meeting at Frontier restaurant on Central between 8:45p-9:15p.

Hope to see you tonight!

John 1:4-9

In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 12/12/2013

Bible Gateway passage: Ephesians 5:22-33 - New King James Version

Currently the divorce rate is about 50%. Many marriages result in divorce because of the way the couples view marriage.

Do you have the right view of marriage?

One day a boy lost one of his contact lenses. They were worth $250. He spent a lot of time trying to locate it, but he couldn’t. Eventually, he told his mom. The boy’s mom began looking for the contact lens with him and found it in a matter of minutes.

The boy asked, “How did you find that contact lens in just a few minutes when I must have looked for 20 minutes?” The mom said, “That’s easy. You didn’t find it because you were looking for a contact lens. I found it because I was looking for $250.”

The boys efforts reflected someone who did not recognize the value of what he was looking for.

So what about you. Do you view marriage the way everyone else seems to, not recognizing the true worth and nature of marriage?
Or do you view marriage the way God does? How much of His view do you even understand?

Ephesians 5:22-33 Marriage—Christ and the Church - Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everythin... 12/10/2013

In Memory of Francine K. Samora-Salas

2 Tim 4:7-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only bu...t also to all who have loved His appearing.

Francine was a beautiful, loving sister. We offer prayer, condolences and friendship for those who so keenly feel her absence. But we also look forward to seeing her again one day when we ourselves are also called Home to be with our precious Savior and family.

1 Cor 15: 55-57
“O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?”
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:21-23
For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; Memorial page for Francine K. Samora-Salas
