Today, the Franklin family laid Sister Franklin, "Grandma Precious" to rest. Because of the current Covid-19 restrictions, we could not have a proper funeral service that she deserved. We will try to schedule a memorial at a later date.

We wish to thank everyone who posted a kind word, a memory, and who expressed their love.

The family wanted to share the following obituary:

Norma Franklin
May 10, 1928 - April 08, 2020

Our beloved Mother, "Grandma Precious" went to her heavenly home on April 8, 2020. Norma Lee Lappin was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 10th of 1928 to Marion Harold and Lula Lappin. She married Wallace Manning Franklin on July 25, 1945 and has joined him in paradise. She is also preceded in death by her stepmother, Edna Lappin and her siblings Doris Houghton, Winona Lappin, Deloris Lappin and Harold Lappin.

Norma is survived by her two sons and their wives, Wallace Harold and Brenda Franklin and Stanley Wayne and Annette Franklin. She was blessed with four grandchildren and three grandchildren in law: Melissa and Tom Padilla, Sheri and Andy Glanz, Mark Franklin and Chrissy and Steve Jeter. Norma was also very proud to announce that she had eight great grandsons: Chorus, Taylor, Tommy, Billy, Davin, Jack, Luke and Brody and the one and only great granddaughter, Katrina.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She and Wallace founded a storefront mission church on Bridge and Five Points, Western Heights Assembly of God, in 1962. The
church was moved to its current location on Sage Rd. in 1965, and Western Heights Day Nursery was then founded in 1968.

Her musical abilities were bountiful. She was blessed with a beautiful singing voice and she played piano, organ, accordion, harmonica and loved to whistle and yodel. She was a pioneer in early childhood education. Her desire to care and love for others will carry her legacy far beyond her earthly stay. We will miss her dearly, but we will always remember her for how she loved so well.

We would like to thank the staffs of Aspen Care and Hospice of NM for their wonderful love and care for our mother.

We ask that flowers and or donations to please be held until the Memorial which will be announced at a later date.

Today we remember the day that Jesus died on an old rugged cross. What does the cross mean to you?

Galatians 6:14 English Standard Version (ESV)
14 But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

Our beloved Sister Franklin, Grandma Precious, went to be with the Lord this morning. We are sad, but rejoice because we are confident that today, she is in the arms of Jesus!

[03/17/20]   Western Heights Church Coronavirus Update:

As you may know by now, the president now recommends that we “limit social gatherings to 10 people.” View the official statement here:https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/03.16.20_coronavirus-guidance_8.5x11_315PM.pdf

Western Heights is complying with this recommendation. Effective immediately, the following are postponed until further notice: Saturday Women’s Bible Study, Wednesday Men’s Group, and Friday Youth Group.

Also, our Sunday service will be made available online only until further notice, which you can watch Sundays at 10am, on Facebook Live.

Many of you have asked about the Mobile Food Pantry:

I have been in communication with Road Runner Food Bank, and they are NOT cancelling any Mobile Food Pantry Operations. So FOR NOW, the pantry is still scheduled for Monday, March 23. As you are aware, this is a rapidly changing situation and this information may change at a moment’s notice. Please be patient while we try to get you the latest information.

WHAT WE KNOW: If the Pantry continues as scheduled, there WILL BE strict guidelines and procedures in place for our volunteers and guests. Gloves and masks, and hand washing will be enforced for our volunteers.

The plan now is for our volnteers to pre-assemble the food baskets in the church auditorium, and our guests will remain in their car. A volunteer will take a basket to their car. This will help keep foot traffic to a minimum. We still want to serve our community, but we need to do so in a wise and safe manner.

Again, I ask our volunteers, if YOU are in the Higher Risk category, please DO NOT volunteer. Higher Risk individuals include, Older adults and People who have serious chronic medical conditions like Heart disease, Diabetes and Lung disease. However, if you need food, please sign up as a guest, and you will receive a basket.

Higher risk individual guidelines are here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/high-risk-complications.html

We are still the church, and we are trusting God to take care of us in the midst of this crisis.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” ~ Isaiah 41:10

In Christ,
Pastor Tom

[03/13/20]   Corona Virus Update: Hello Church Family,

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I am aware of and staying up to date on the developing news surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19) in New Mexico.

An order was issued today by New Mexico's health secretary prohibiting large gatherings of more than 100 people. This order listed many exemptions, including places of worship.

Since our church has a regular average attendance of 80, as of right now we WILL HAVE church on Sunday. However, in line with CDC recommendations, we are encouraging senior citizens, people with serious chronic medical conditions, and those with weakened immune systems to PLEASE stay home. We encourage those to watch our service LIVE on Facebook, at 10am.

Our Saturday Women’s Bible Study (9:30am) and Wednesday Men’s Group (6:30 pm) are NOT canceled and are scheduled planned.

Please be assured that we have regularly scheduled cleaning service of our common areas, and are making sure our church is clean and ready for Sunday.

We encourage you to follow CDC guidelines to make sure you are following personal safeguards, such as washing hands properly. And, if you are experiencing any signs of fever or sickness, please stay home and get better, or seek medical attention.

We will continue to closely monitor the situation, day by day, and provide any changes or updates via email and social media.

Finally, I encourage you to NOT fear, but to pray that this virus is contained and a solution is found quickly. Most of all, let’s be encouraged by God’s word:

Philippians 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)
6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:7 New Living Translation (NLT)
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

In Christ,
Pastor Tom
