YAY!
I am looking for a rescue or shelter in the Las Cruces area in need of a large dog crate. I used it last year to transport a dog from the Clovis shelter to her new home in Las Cruces, and the family no longer needs it. They would prefer to donate it to a rescue or shelter.

How to keep your animal companions safe this 4th...

With the 4th of July quickly approaching AWD wants to remind pet owners to keep your pets safe. Here are some pet safety tips for the 4th of July.

July 4th is a wonderful day to celebrate with family and friends, but for animals it is a fearful, stressful and dangerous time. The fireworks often drive pets to act out of character, especially if left outside and unattended. They run away, jump over fences, and leap through screens and windows out of fear.

Animal Welfare is encouraging pet owners to protect their pets from potential harm by taking these simple precautions during the Fourth of July festivities.

**Leave your pets at home and indoors. The noise of the fireworks for most pets could cause anxiety, fear and a desire to flee.
**Keep pets in a lit, cool, calm closed room with familiar sounds and chew toys that will help to distract and make the animal feel safe.
**Stay home with your pet.
**Identification tags and microchips are a must in case the pet escapes. This will help to reunite the pets and the owners quickly and effectively. Please make sure information on tags and microchips are updated.
**If the pet gets especially stressed, ask your vet for help to calm your pet down.

Should your pet get lost and end up at either shelter, Animal Welfare wants to expedite the process. If your pet is already spayed or neutered, he or she will be returned to you free of charge. All you have to do is pick up your pet at the shelter.

Call now!!!

The day after the Senate Conservation Committee passed Roxy's Law 7-2, we received the following report from a resident of Peñasco, NM: the 9th dog caught in a trap or snare on public land in approximately three months.

They were walking their dogs up the arroyo in the foothills near Dixon, NM, when they heard their 10-year-old heeler/shepherd mix cry out.

"I thought at first she had stepped into some cactus but then I saw her waving her right paw and crying, trying to yank her paw from something. I turned back to her and saw that she was trapped in a steel jaw trap that was connected to a small tree. Her paw was gripped in the trap and she was struggling and crying. I wasn’t sure how to open the trap at first because she was struggling and trying to pull her paw out. When I tried to help her she was trying to bite me. I finally got her calm and stable enough to be able to see how to open the spring loaded trap. I held her body so she wouldn’t move around and I used my feet to open the trap and she pulled her paw out. Her toes were smashed but she wasn’t bleeding. There was a piece of wax paper on the trap which I assume contained some kind of bait. I’m not sure if she ate what was connected there because it was empty when I went to free her. Gratefully she wasn’t too injured and we were able to continue our hike.

Unfortunately when we were on our way back down the arroyo she found a second trap right across the from the first and caught her left leg in it. Because I knew from the first experience how to free her I was able to calm her quickly and get her leg out without much trouble. The trap was the exact same kind of steel jaw trap as the first with a piece of wax paper attached, it was empty, so I assume she ate what was attached there. Her paw wasn’t bleeding from it being in the trap but she has been limping slightly on both feet. I hope she didn’t eat anything poisonous. So far today she has just been low energy and sleeping in her bed so I feel a bit concerned."

Roxy's Law (Senate Bill 32) will next be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee, but it is not yet scheduled for a hearing.

Great news! Please keep up your calls and letters so this gets done

Big news! Roxy's Law just passed the Senate Conservation Committee with bipartisan support (7-2 vote)!

This is a big first step but there is plenty of work to do. Next up is the Senate Judiciary Committee (https://www.nmlegis.gov/Committee/Standing_Committee?CommitteeCode=SJC) if your state senator is on that committee, we encourage you to reach out and ask him/her to support Senate Bill 32.

Thank you to everyone who has gotten us this far!

URGENT: Keep our New Mexico public lands safe from dangerous traps, snares & poisons

apnm.salsalabs.org Every year, leg-hold traps, body-crushing traps, and snares are hidden throughout New Mexico's public lands by trappers hoping to exterminate certain wildlife species or simply make money from furs. These are the same public lands traveled by tourists...

It is the season for this horrific situation. Please talk to your legislative representative and stop this!

It started out as a beautiful day-hike for a small group of travelers. But sadly, what they found while visiting #NewMexicoTrue the #LandOfEnchantment overshadowed the natural beauty our state has to offer. Instead, the horror of their experience will be a memory they take home with them 💔

Late in the afternoon on Saturday 11/21/20, a little over a mile into the wilderness on NM State owned BLM land...their dog alerted them. The aroma from the bait buckets hanging from a nearby tree got the pups attention & what they found at the base of the tree took their breath away 🙁 Chained to the thick branches was a steel leg-hold trap, unmarked & completely illegal. In the grip of the sharp, rusty jaw of the trap was the paw of a fuzzy black dog...laying lifeless in the hole she dug to die in. They called out to the unresponsive dog, they slowly approached her, expecting the worst in the process. She slowly opened her eyes & with what seemed like the last bit of strength left in her, she gazed up at them....pleading. Her body was emaciated, her snoot caked with dirt & now crusting with discharge. Her paw was swollen & extremely painful, she was severely dehydrated. There is no telling how long she had been there & it was clear she wasnt going to make it much longer 😢

"How to release a suffering stray dog from a steel leg-hold trap on NM Hiking Trails" was not in their guidebook & where they are from, these monstrosities are illegal, As it should be! They did not know how to free this poor dog without hurting her more or possibly getting injured themselves. So they did what they could by providing her with fresh water, a bit of turkey jerky, kindness, hope, some brief moments of comfort & a promise to return for her. Then they RAN full speed the entire way out of the wilderness.

As soon as they got back within service, they began calling everyone & posting everywhere in their efforts to find help for her. They contacted State Agencies, County Agencies & local Animal Welfare Agencies, to be told repeatedly they would "have to wait until Monday". #UNacceptable At appx 7pm Sat eve, they left a voice message on the NMDOG line. I checked messages that night around 10pm & theirs stopped me in my tracks so I called back immediately & they answered! I told them we would figure it out, we had to get this dog out of there...I could hear the relief in their voices.

I cant even imagine the despair they felt having to leave her there. Obviously this needed to be handled immediately. "Mmmmm, who can I call in the middle of night to go into the forest in the middle of nowhere with a group of strangers to free a fairly large & injured stray dog caught in a leg-hold trap hours away". It was easy.....NMDOG Volunteer Alysha made direct contact w the finders immediately & they put a plan into motion #OperationWildTurkey
To ensure the safety of our Rescue TEAM, it was decided to wait until daybreak to hike back in & execute the Mission. I dont think any of us slept at all....worried & wondering if she could make it one more night.

MAHLIAS Rescuers made the 2 hour hike back in at daybreak, carrying the supplies & equipment needed, along with some apprehension about what they might find. But when they rounded that last corner...there she was, still very weak but ALIVE!! Pawprayers had been answered THANK DOG!! Gently reassuring MAHLIA that they were there to help, assessing her immediate condition & needs, Alysha triaged the situation to determine the best way to release & stabilize her for the hike out. Success!! The TEAM loaded MAHLIA into the crate & began the journey back to the awaiting vehicles.

Once MAHLIA was freed from her harrowing ordeal & it was determined she could make the trip safely to Abq...she was transported directly to our TEAM at Petroglyph Animal Hospital to receive the 911 medical care she so desperately needed. Lifesaving fluids, pain meds, bloodwork, xrays & a microchip scan which yielded a (+). YAY!! or so we thought. Unfortunately, MAHLIAS people were not able to commit to providing the kind of indoor environment MAHLIA would need to make a full recovery, nor would they be able to follow up with her post op care & recovery. They said she would be killed by Coyotes, Bobcats or maybe even their own other dogs!
Yikes, that sounds just terrible.

We are so grateful that MAHLIA was surrendered to our legal custody & we made a promise to her & to her rescuers....MAHLIA will now be a treasured NMDOG pack member, for FoReVeR. She will never be left alone again, she will never be allowed to wander into danger & she will never go hungry or thirsty. We will walk each step with her, no matter where her journey takes us & MAHLIA will now be surrounded by all of the LoVe & support she could ever imagine 💞
#NMDOGvillage.....this is where you come in & we need you ❤

Knowing the significance of the situation, I reached out to our friends at Trap Free New Mexico & put them in direct contact with the finders. #TrapFreeNM will work with eyewitnesses & State Agencies on the investigation, NMDOG will continue to provide veterinary care, documentation & we will keep everyone updated on MAHLIAS progress.

Together, we can give MAHLIA everything she needs to make a full recovery & put this whole nightmare behind her!!

Thank you to each of you that supports our important work. Without you we are nothing & without NMDOG, many would continue to suffer.
A huge thanks of gratitude to MAHLIAS Heros....without their tenacity, her story would have ended much differently. MAHLIA is doing well considering everything she has been through. 911 surgery was performed on her foot & though she has not yet felt like getting up or walking....she is eating, she is drinking & she is sleeping a lot. Her frail little body is healing, her organs are beginning to come back to life & we are confident MAHLIA will make a full recovery. #UNchained and #TrapFree
