This Sunday we continue our series "God is Holding Your Life" and I will be preaching on Psalm 23. Would you be willing to answer the following question? I may share in my sermon, but will NOT share your name!

What would you do if you were not afraid?

Join us on facebook live for worship Sunday at 10:30 am.
Are we having church chat today?
Thank you for the service and the Q & A! During the Q & A, the sound was very hard to hear. We could hear Neil loud and clear, but we could barely hear anyone else. Could you use microphones or the same sound system that Neil is using?
Waiting to listen to an awesome Psalm Sunday service
I was blessed to be able to tune in to the live broadcast of the service this morning. Thanks to all of you who made this opportunity possible. I'd like to share in a more concrete way, but my video capacities from home are nonexistent. Instead, I'll share in print form the "Woman's Monologue" I'd hoped to be able to do in person:

PETER’S MOTHER-IN-LAW (JOANNA)
Trudie Barreras
(Matthew 8:14-15; Mark 1:29-31; Luke 4:38-39)

Do you realize how astonishing it is that the Master noticed us?
We, the old women, the widows, the cast-offs?

Take me, for instance.
Simon bar Jonah married my daughter, my sweet, beloved Ysabet.
Shortly before all the excitement when the Master called Simon
And his brother Andrew from their nets, Ysabet took sick and died.
We were all heart-broken.
Simon went back out upon the lake, fishing like a demon, yet somehow
Catching only blisters, bruises and sunburn.
He came back to the hut he still magnanimously allowed me to clean for him,
To eat the pottage I could prepare, then grimly went back to the boat
To pursue his fruitless fishing, returning in fury when his nets were empty.

Then Jesus came, and all was changed. Simon, and Andrew as well,
Became his followers. But miracle of miracles,
When they set forth on the road of ministry,
We women were allowed to trail along.

For me, it started when Jesus healed me.
I don’t know what my ailment was.
Perhaps just the creeping, deep despair that sometimes comes with losing all…
First my husband, then my only child, and then, as Jesus called him out,
My son-in-law, my last support, despite how uneasy it had been.
But whatever the reason, the morning came when I no longer
Could even rise up from my bed. All things were dull and lifeless.
My very bones ached to my deepest core; my heart beat heavily,
And I could no longer stir myself even to weep.

And then Jesus came.
Somehow his very presence cleared the grayness from my vision.
His touch stirred the blood within my veins and warmth poured through me.
Immediately it was obvious the time for misery was past;
The time to take up daily tasks had come. Life was again a joy!

It is not surprising that our names are seldom mentioned, and we
Are noticed in the stories of his ministry only in connection with his chosen twelve
To whom we were related.
What is amazing is that all of us – I as the mother-in-law of him who became
The Rock on which his community of faith was built,
Zebedee’s wife as the mother of his beloved John and James,
And the several Mary’s, all of us who would have languished in our homes,
Overlooked, rejected and ignored, were called to service and to joy!
Oh, yes, the road was rough. He said the birds have nests and foxes dens,
But he’d no place to call his own. It is not easy to take the nomad’s path,
And yet, our sense of purpose never dimmed, not even on that last horrid day
When all the men had fled but John, and only we and he stood at the foot
Of the cross on which our Jesus hung.

In that moment anguish, shame and terror combined.
John’s own mother finally knew what our Lord had meant
When he told her sons the cost of being a disciple,
And they blithely said that they could pay it.
He gave to John responsibility for his own sweet mother, whose pain
Was greatest of us all, and we wept together.

And so, for faithfulness, we all were blessed as we came to that bright day
When, following our traditional duties of taking ointment to the tomb
To anoint his body, we found that the tomb was empty,
And angels stood on guard.

Can you understand the wonder of it?
We, the women – those whom society called useless or even worse,
Since we were women without husbands to give us status –
We were fully part of the new community God sent our Jesus to establish!

Most of us were never known by name
In the stories that the male disciples recounted.
But we are known, and loved, and called by God.
And Jesus trusted us with the greatest message of them all…
HE LIVES! HE LIVES! OUR JESUS LIVES TODAY!
And we will all proclaim it!
Problem solved

Discover a Different Kind of Church We move within the mainstream of progressive Christianity as we follow the teachings of Jesus. When asked what was the greatest commandment in the law, Jesus replied:

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.

Becoming a People of Hope

10/03/2021 - The past year has been one unlike any in recent memory. For so many of us our lives have changed; we've celebrated life's milestones at home or spent holidays alone. But despite how our world has changed, we've kept our eyes on the horizon--we've held onto our hope. #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Judith Maynard. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. 09/26/2021

Salty People

09/26/2021 - Jesus tells his followers that mercy and love are the vehicles through which we discover and express our identity. And one of the great things about service, love, and mercy is that you never run out of them. There is no scarcity of opportunity to care for others, no lack of occasions to love your neighbor. #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Judith Maynard. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. First In Line

There is so much striving in our world. People strive to climb the corporate ladder; we strive to get ahead financially, physically and even spiritually. Expending all that extra energy is exhausting and where does it lead to anyway? Jesus tells us that if we really want to get ahead, at least in ways that really matter and last. We need a radically different approach to life. To live in God’s world, we need to become like children. #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Paul Anway. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. Just Who Do You Think You Are?

09/12/2021 - “Who am I?” “What do other people think about me?” “What makes me, me?” These are all fundamental questions that go to the heart of our sense of self – our identity. Of course, Identity means many different things, such as: gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, and so on. As followers of Jesus, not only do we have to understand ourselves we also need to understand who Jesus is to us today. Today we will look at these two questions, “Who are you?” and “Who is this Jesus person to you?” #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Paul Anway. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. All music is used by permission. CCLI License #1370238, Streaming #20457342.

Why Do You Do What You Do?

08/22/2021 - “Actions Speak Louder Than Words”, “Walk the Talk”, “Keep Your Word”--It’s obvious the evidence of our thoughts and beliefs is found in the things we do. Focusing on our actions is an important part of the Spiritual Journey, but that will only get us so far. To go the extra-mile in the process of becoming our highest and best self we must also look at our motivations for our actions. Today we will ask the deep question, “Why do you do what you do?” #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Paul Anway. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. All music is used by permission. Hurry Up and Wait

08/15/2021 - At some point in everyone’s life we stumble and fall. Circumstances beyond our control bring unexpected and unwelcome change and then we set in our minds ideas about how we want things to turn out. However, much suffering and pain comes when our desired outcomes don’t come to fruition. An ancient scripture passage promises us God’s Divine help in such times, but the thing is we have to wait for things to unfold in God’s time rather than our own. #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Paul Anway. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. All music is used by permission. CCLI License #1370238, Streaming #20457342.

All Those Broken Pieces

07/28/2021 - Those whose hearts have been broken and perhaps have been able to accept the invitation to allow ourselves to stand still and experience that brokenness somehow have a greater chance of our hearts being truly open to the pain of the world. And maybe that is how God starts putting it all back together into something new. And useful, perhaps. And surely always beautiful. #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Like a Good Shepherd, Jesus is Here

There is a popular TV commercial for insurance which features “Jake, from State Farm.” I would purchase insurance from Jake - he is good looking with a great smile and he appears very likeable. The commercial ends with “like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” Well, somehow, while preparing my sermon, that tune got stuck in my head only, I replaced it with “like a good shepherd, Jesus is here.” I will leave the rest for Sunday! #mccabqLIVE with Rev. Judith Maynard. *Portions of today's service are pre-recorded. All music is used by permission. CCLI License #1370238, Streaming #20457342.

For Every Season There is a Time...We Remember

06/13/2021 - Five years ago, on June 12, 2016 a man entered the Pulse nightclub and opened fire on the crowd. Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night", and most of the victims were Latino. It is the deadliest incident in the history of violence against LGBT people in the United States.
