Surgite, a sacred dance company

Surgite presents liturgical dance during church services, leads workshops, and performs concerts of "golden oldies" in nursing homes, assisted living, and Alzheimer's facilities.

Surgite, a sacred dance company, was founded in 1985 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A not-for-profit corporation, Surgite presents liturgical dance in the worship services of many different denominations, as well as leading workshops for people of all ages and presenting concerts in retirement and assisted living communities.

One of our Dancing Outside the Box students had a tumble recently. Well, it wasn’t really a tumble. She was standing on the edge of a step and fell backwards. The step was the top step of three. She went down all three of them and ended up about 4 feet away from the bottom step, facing a completely different direction.

But she didn’t fall.

She should have fallen. She should have hit the back of her head on the floor -- hard. She should have wrenched her ankle. Or knee. Or back. She should have needed professional medical attention, or even a trip to the emergency room.

She walked away.

Why?

The obvious first answer is that her guardian angel called in several reinforcements, and maybe some large air bags. I have no doubt that is a good part of the answer.

But – why else?

In Dancing Outside the Box, we focus a lot on balance. We practice standing “off balance” and then getting back on balance. We practice shifting weight from foot to foot. We practice feeling when our heads are over our hips, and our hips are over our feet – and we practice feeling when they’re not. We practice using our core muscles to hold our bodies erect. We practice keeping our weight “up,” so we don’t go “down.”

When this student needed that information, it was there for her, ingrained in her body.

So many times, when we are performing in a nursing home, or talking with friends, we hear that someone’s final decline began with a bad fall. We work with our Dancing Outside the Box students to help them maintain their strength and agility, so they don’t fall. We help them maintain their quality of life. We help them keep working, so they are active, productive citizens.

Your donations help us create a place where students can learn the skills that can save them from that bad fall.

Dance has historically been controversial among Christians.
There are many records prohibiting dance in church for a lot of different reasons.

One reason: the Gnostic idea in the first century that the soul was "good and pure" and the body was "not pure."
