[03/17/20]   Good morning, FPC family! Many of us have committed to the practice of daily prayer at 9am and 3pm as way for us to be remain connected in this time of isolation. We encourage you to join us! Here is a suggestion for this morning's prayer at 9am. You can reply to this post with any of your own prayers, we'll be sure to lift them up.

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, and so today, we offer up the prayer commonly known as St. Patrick’s Breastplate prayer. It was written for protection on a journey, which feels appropriate for all of us in this moment. Even though we aren’t traveling anywhere we are certainly on a new kind of journey! Take a moment to breathe deeply and set aside all the worries and fear. Take some time to just be silent this morning.

I bind unto myself today the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever, by power of faith, Christ’s incarnation; his baptism in the Jordan river; his death on the cross for my salvation.
His bursting from the spiced tomb; his riding up the heavenly way; his coming at the day of doom I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself today the virtues of the star-lit heaven, the glorious sun’s life-giving ray, the whiteness of the moon at even, the flashing of the lightning free, the whirling wind’s tempestuous shocks, the stable earth, the deep salt sea around the old eternal rocks.

I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead, God’s eye to watch, God’s might to stay, God’s ear to hearken to my need, the wisdom of my God to teach, God’s hand to guide, God’s shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, God’s heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me, Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ in quiet, Christ in danger, Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity, by invocation of the same, the Three in One, the One in Three, of whom all nature has creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word. Praise to the Lord of my salvation, salvation is of Christ the Lord. Amen.

—Patrick of Ireland(c. 389–461)

[03/16/20]   Daily prayer is one of the oldest practices of the church, and in these quickly changing days, it offers us a way to be in community even while separated. As our Book of Common Worships says in its introduction, "Even when we are engaged in private prayer we are not alone. Whether we gather with a group or pray as individuals, when we pray the church's prayer we are joined with the faithful of every time and place."

As a way of remaining connected to one another during this time of social distancing, we invite you to practice daily prayer together at 9am and 3pm. We will be posting specific prayers each day here on our page, and if you would like to receive a text reminder at each time, please text @fpc1881 to 81010 (when prompted, say you're a parent - this is usually a resource for classrooms...)

We also encourage you to reach out to each other and check in. If you need help finding anyone's contact info, please reach out to us at the church office and we will connect you with a directory.

Is It Good for Us to Be Here?

These words from Debie Thomas are worth your time today as we all figure out how to be the Church in new ways.

"Will we be flexible in the ways we extend love across distances, or will we hunker down in fear and suspicion? Will we dare to be the Church in new ways, even as we practice quarantines and social distancing — or will we forget that we are one body, connected and interdependent, incomplete without each other? Will we have eyes to see God in our neighbors, regardless of whether they are sick or healthy, insured or uninsured, citizen or foreigner, protected or vulnerable? Will we be brave enough to look our own vulnerability — our own mortality — in the eye, and trust that God is with us even in the valley of the shadow of death? Or will we yield to cynicism, panic, and despair?" It's Transfiguration Sunday — the apex of the liturgical season we call Epiphany. After weeks of hints and intimations — a star, a dove, a baptizer’s voice in the wilderness — today we emerge into full sunlight, blinded as God parts the veil and shows us Christ’s majesty.
