Good Afternoon Unity!

This Sunday we move from The Prayer of the Human Being to the next Level with "The Prayer of the Lord." Certainly in the western world, no words are repeated more than what we call The Lords Prayer. But is the prayer that so many grew up with really the pray that Jesus prayed? The short answer is, yes and no. He certainly did not speak Middle English, nor did he command anyone to utter a specific prayer. Further, the prayer that has come down to us bears striking resemblance to the Hindu Gayatri Matta", Buddhist Refuge Prayer and the Islamic Fatiha. Jesus was most likely, using an ancient prayer from the Kaddish as an example of a prayer method. Most scholars believe that the prayer as we know it was composed by a "Q" writer* several centuries after Jesus life.

We do not use the Lords Prayer in Unity except for rare occasions. Yet we do use the technique of prayer Jesus taught, what we call "Affirmative Prayer". Affirmative prayer is the next higher prayer practice from the Prayer of the Human Being. The ultimate form of prayer, which we will be exploring next Sunday, is the Prayer of the Divine Being. It is important to remember though that each level of prayer serves a purpose for true prayer is a journey of consciousness.

See you Sunday!

Namaste' - Gordon

* The Q source (also called Q document, Q Gospel, or Q from German: Quelle, meaning "source") is a hypothetical written collection of primarily Jesus' sayings (logia). Q is part of the common material found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke but not in the Gospel of Mark. According to this hypothesis, this material was drawn from the early Church's oral gospel traditions.

An update from W.O.W. (Women of Wisdom):
September meeting highlights. It was a sweet and meaningful meeting on September 11 as we remembered and honored all victims and heroes from 9/11 on the 20th anniversary of that attack.

We also honored and celebrated the lives of our
loved ones who have passed, sharing their love with each other, along with a releasing and candle lighting ceremony.

Unity's longest running class! The Bible is not the literal word of God, it is a collection of ancient scriptures', Gospels and Letters that have been assembled in a book as "teaching stories" or allegories. With a higher understanding, the Bible becomes not a book of dogma, but a guide for living a life of Positive Practical Spirituality.

Our knitters, Jude and Shirley, at AHEPA Senior Center continue to knit hats for our homeless population in Albuquerque. They are in need of a continuous supply of yarn. Please help in any way you can.

Through the efforts of these ladies and others,
hundreds of hats, scarves and mittens were
distributed last year from USC.

You may have noticed an autumn chill in the air in the early mornings --- colder weather will be approaching sooner than we realize and these ladies like to keep busy.

New Sunday Series: Evolution of Prayer, this Sunday, Part 1
Sunday Services In-Person and on Facebook Live
10:00 am
Music with Todd Lowry and the USC ABQ Music Team + guest soloist, Bill Brooks.
Good Afternoon Unity!

Charles Fillmore wrote, "Prayer is the exercise of faith i the presence and power of the unseen God." (Atom Smashing Power of Mind Pg. 11) Prayer is a natural function of humans and whether we are aware of it or not, every human being prays. Sometimes consciously with intent, sometimes without consciously realizing that we are praying at all. Humans pray to many ideas of God and even atheists pray.

But what is prayer? What is the best way to pray? Is there a wrong way to pray? How did we learn to pray? These are all vital questions. If we are to learn to use the power of prayer effectively, we must come into the understanding of what prayer really is, and how it has evolved with the species. One thing we may be assured of as Cora Fillmore wrote in "Teach Us to Pray, (pg. 4), ""We have been so persistently taught that prayer consists in asking God for some human need that we have lost sight of our Spiritual identity and become a race of praying beggars."

Beginning this Sunday we will work to change that consciousness. We will explore the evolution of prayer, not from a human history viewpoint, but from a human experience viewpoint.

See you Sunday!

Namaste' - Gordon
