Mesa View Online Worship, March 29

Welcome everyone to our online worship service. We miss see all of your smiling faces and we hope the songs, prayer, and message offer a little grace during this strange time. Please be sure to check-in by hitting the like button. Also, offer one another a short greeting as you watch. We loved hearing from everyone last week.

You may be asking why the service is recorded this week. As the virus spreads, we felt it was just not worth the risk to bring everyone under one roof. Furthermore, with the governor's order prohibiting gatherings of more than 5 people, it was going to be a stretch to put something together that was watchable. We absolutely will continue to offer a weekly digital worship time until we can meet again in-person and we invite you to join us each Sunday. God is with each of you in your home during this time and through the web, so are we!

A FEW ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1) Words to the songs as well as the weekly lectionary insert are being emailed to you each Saturday night so that you can follow along as we go. You're welcome to sing the songs with us, as long as it won't scare your family too much. :)

2) To give an offering to the church, go to mesaviewumc.com and hit the "Giving" button. It's easy and safe to give online, and Donna is happy to help if you wish to set up online giving ([email protected]). You also may mail a check to Mesa View UMC, 4701 Montano, NW, Albuquerque, NM 87120 .

3) Join us Monday morning, March 30 at 8 AM for Coffee With the Pastor! We'll have a short devotional and prayer time together on Zoom meeting. Just click this link and open zoom when prompted to join in: https://zoom.us/j/329080808

4) The landscaping team has big plans for our outdoor space at the church. We'll hold a zoom meeting today (March 29) at 12:30 PM to continue organizing. Anyone is welcome to join in. Just click this zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/941420063

Have a great day!

Dear friends at Mesa View:

Guess what? I miss you all and the cabin fever is definitely setting in. I briefly considered building a blanket fort in the living room, but then I decided a better idea would be to invite y'all to join me for coffee over the web.

From your home computer, just click this link and follow the prompts from Zoom video conferencing: https://zoom.us/j/329080808 .

You can also join from your smartphone or tablet (you might have to download the zoom app).

If you are new to Zoom, consider logging in 10 minutes or so before 8 AM to make sure everything starts up as it should.

You can also call-in from your phone by following these instructions:
1. Dial +1 253 215 8782 US
or +1 301 715 8592 US
2. Enter the meeting ID when prompted (329-080-808) followed by #.
3. You will be asked for your participant ID. You don't need one; just hit # once more.

See you Monday!

-Pastor Josh

Our former pastor, John Nash, has created a great Bible study based on movies available for streaming. Here is his study based on the movie Up. Check it out with your family to pass the time!

Our movie recommendation for today is Up. We invite you to watch the movie together and then talk together about what we can learn about the adventure that God has called for us to participate in and what keeps us from that abundant life.

After watching the film, answer these questions:
• John Lennon once said that life is what happens while you are busy making other plans. Do you think that’s what happened to Carl and Ellie? Why or why not?
• Why can’t they ever make their dream come true?
• Why do you think that Carl doesn’t want to sell the house?
• Have you ever had something that aways made you think of someone who had died?
• What was it? What happened to it?
• Why do you think that Carl doesn’t want to receive any help from Russel?
• What changes that for Carl?
• What does Carl learn from Russel?
• What does Russel learn from Carl?
• What does Carl learn from Ellie about their adventures?
• Why do you think he could not see their adventures for what they were when they were happening like Ellie does?
• How can what we are experiencing now be seen as an adventure?
Read Luke 10:1-11 and 2 Timothy 1:3-8
After reading the scripture, answer these questions:
• How do Carl and Russel have to face their fears both individually and collectively?
• How does that match with the instruction given to Timothy?
• How does God give us a spirit to overcome cowardice/fear/timidity?
• Does anyone in the film exhibit a “spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline”? If so, who?
• What do you think is the driving force for Charles Muntz?
• How do Carl and Russel’s lives change by going out?
• How do the disciples change by being sent out?
• How does God send us out?
• How does that change our lives?
• Notice the things that happen in community. When Carl is alone, he is a grumpy old man. Charles Muntz is alone he is eccentric and paranoid. So, what does the sending out and the change that Carl undergoes when he is with Russel, teach us about our faith?
• How does God call for us to take risks, to be adventurers and be vulnerable?
• What do we have to throw out of our house to get it flying again in order to claim that adventure, that call from God?
• With that knowledge, what are you going to do? Because, adventure is out there.

Pray together:
As we have been raised with Christ, O God,
we are called to set our sights, our goals,
not on the things of the world,
but on heavenly things.
We are new creations in you,
separated and divided no more,
given the power and love
to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
Open our eyes,
that we may recognize
your presence among us,
and clothe ourselves
in your mercy and grace
so that we go forth
in your name
to live the adventure you have called for us.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
