KidZone

KidZone is First Presbyterian Church's Bible-based after school program on Wednesdays during the school year. The program is open to all elementary kids (K-5th grade).

Kids love coming to KidZone because of the game time, crafts, Bible lessons, a super-sized snack, rockin' worship music, and friendship they build with other kids and their leaders. Every week, caring staff and volunteers nurture and shepherd children in our KidZone program. Age-appropriate Bible teaching, discussion, fun games, interesting crafts, videos, drama and lively music lead children on t

Kids will evolve — time, hormones, and big feelings will make sure of that. It’s our job as parents to create an environment that nurtures their inevitable changes and one that allows the relationship to survive on the other side.

So, leverage the season you’re in. Build on open communication because that skill is transferable. Focus on heart matters rather than common interests because those will change, too. Play up vulnerability, honesty, and empathy in your relationships with your kids. Those are the things that will last.

Parenting, in every phase of a kid's life, is overwhelming. And while sometimes it’ll feel like it’s too much to handle, just know that all of it is not without purpose and you are the exact parent your kid needs to make it through.

Making friends as a kid is such a mix of emotion. Fun, exciting, hard, scary. But no one will deny how important friendships are at any stage of life. That's why, as parents, helping our kids understand the difference between safe and unsafe friends is critical.

We have to partner with them to help define what those words mean for themselves and let them explore what qualities and characteristics fall under each of those categories. Once you have defined those categories, you can constantly come back to them in every conversation about friendship.

This lets them build the framework for friendship that will help them for a lifetime.

In 2013, Stephen Colbert — who lost his dad and two older brothers closest in age to him in a tragic plane crash when he was ten—won an Emmy. In his acceptance speech, he said, “I want to thank my mom,” he began, “for not worrying about me and believing I’d be okay.”

If ever a mom had reason to worry and earned the right to be fearful, anxious and nervous, it was her.

In one day, she lost her husband two of her boys. But under the most challenging circumstances, she made a choice. She decided her worry wouldn’t set the tone. Her fear wouldn’t drive her decisions. Her anxiety wouldn’t rule her behavior.

As a new school year starts, our influence in our kids’ life naturally decreases. But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. They’re becoming who they’ll be. And we can take a note from Mrs. Colbert, and trust that we’ve done all we can to ensure they’ll be okay.

School can be a pretty scary place for kids of any age, especially with all of the uncertainty that awaits them. Whether your kid is the type to draw in a crowd or one who sits alone in the library during lunch, there will be moments when every kid will feel like they’re on the outside.

This is a gentle reminder to create an environment at home that, no matter what happens at school, is safe, stable, and nurturing. Your kid may have a lot of things they’re unsure about, but don’t let home be one of them.

Kids can ride the bus from their schools to Southwest (bus hub) and then transfer to the "KidZone" bus to ride to the church for KidZone. There are always plenty of people to help the kids navigate this the first few weeks of KidZone. This service is FREE. You DO however, need to pick up your kids when we are done at 5:30 p.m. 😉🙃😊

Our kids are watching and observing to see what our beliefs and our behavior say about the world. It's important for them to know we believe that faith, hope and love are bigger than the world’s scariness (and even sturdier than our well-constructed parental worries).

If you're feeling anxiety as your kids head back into the school year, try saying this, "My kids will be fine. Not because of anything I did. But because every day, as they move farther from my reach, I am reminded of Whose they are and how impossibly much they are loved by the One who gave them to us in the first place."

Sixth graders are entering their first year of middle school. Their bodies are beginning to change, fights with friends will seem never-ending, and the mood swings will come in full force.

The one thing your sixth grader needs the most right now is affirmation that they will get through this phase. They need constant reminders that they are loved, valued, and that no matter what they go through in this phase, you will be present for them.

There may be no phase where a kid’s confidence is tested more than in middle school. It’s a time of self-discovery, growth, and changes — ALL the changes.

You can’t rescue your pr***en from every disappointment or heartbreak, but you can build their confidence at home.

You help build the confidence of a middle schooler by affirming their personal journey. When you joyfully allow your middle schooler to experiment with their hairstyle for the sixth time in a month, only for them to circle back to the exact same cut they started with, you’re increasing their confidence (while decreasing your bank account).

It’s so easy for us to make the rules more important than the relationship. It’s in the tone of our voice, our body language, and our eyes.

If we are not careful, disappointment in our kids’ behavior can be translated into their hearts as rejection.

The truth is, our children will always challenge the rules and debate our reasoning, but we should strive to parent in a way that they can never question how much we love them.

There’s something in your life that’s zapping your energy and taking up a lot more mental space than it should. Maybe it’s your kids’ busy extracurricular activities schedule. Maybe you’re overcommitting to something that should only be getting a little time. If you find yourself overwhelmed with trying to keep up, maybe it’s a sign you were never meant to carry such a heavy load in the first place. To be the best version of yourself for you and your family, you have to know your limits. You won’t be any good to anyone if you’re exhausted and have nothing left to give. Do you have anything in your life that you need to put down? What’s your first step to doing that?

Call it a club. Call it a clique. Call it a team. A crowd mentality begins to form during fourth and fifth grades. If you see a fourth or fifth grader doing, saying, or wearing something that confuses you, check out what their peers are doing, saying, or wearing. Peer approval (and disapproval) is significantly motivating because in this phase, friends matter a lot. Don’t worry, your opinion will matter again . . . but that may be a few years.

A recent survey showed that families only spend an average of 37 minutes together a day. We don't know about you but that number made our jaw drop. But then we started to think about all the time spent at work, school, sports practices, dance classes, cooking, cleaning, sleeping. . . and now we're not so surprised.

BUT that doesn't mean we can't make the most of the moments we have. So as you’re thinking through your daily allotment of family time, here are a few cues to keep in mind:

Don't try looking for more time, try looking to spend the time you have more purposefully.
You don’t need a solid 37 minutes to connect. Sometimes a focused five or ten minutes here and there throughout the course of the day is all you need.
Your kids long to be seen, heard, and enjoyed. That doesn't take much time, but it does require intention.

This is your reminder this week that what you have to offer your kid right now is good enough. Matter of fact, it’s downright great. Even though you may not feel like it all the time, you are a wonderful person and parent. Perfect? Far from it. But that’s OK! Perfection was never ours to obtain. Just keep showing up every day for your kids. That counts.

Hey! Stop being so hard on yourself. Yes, we’re talking to you. This whole parenting thing will be filled with trial and error and you’ll find yourself thinking you’ll never get it right. And maybe you’re right, but what is “right” anyway?

There will always be something in our parenting that we wish was better, something in ourselves we hope won’t negatively impact our kids in some way. But the parent you are now is the exact parent your kids need. Growth happens anywhere, especially in the mess. We’re just here to encourage someone out there today that everything you’re feeling right now is completely normal.

After a long day at school, we make sure our kids have time to play in ways that make their hearts happy.

What would it look like if you did the same for yourself, knowing that play can make you healthier and able to be more present in both your work and home relationships?

As you head into summer and begin a new family rhythm, what can you do for fun for the sake of fun? What could you do for fun simply because you want to?
