KidZone

KidZone is First Presbyterian Church's Bible-based after school program on Wednesdays during the school year. The program is open to all elementary kids.

Kids love coming to KidZone because of the game time, crafts, Bible lessons, a super-sized snack, rockin' worship music, and friendship they build with other kids and their leaders. Every week, caring staff and volunteers nurture and shepherd children in our KidZone program. Age-appropriate Bible teaching, discussion, fun games, interesting crafts, videos, drama and lively music lead children on their journey of discovery. Our purpose is to grow a generation of children who love God and want to know more about His will for their lives. We look forward to seeing your kids on Wednesdays during the school year. This is a FREE program.

3:00 to 5:30 p.m. The kids can ride the school bus from their school to Southwest and change to the KidZone School Bus and come to the church FREE!

Operating as usual

Your family may look exactly how you’ve always pictured it. Or, like many, the word “family” may have evolved over time for you, taking on a whole new meaning.

While our definition for what a family looks like may change, a family’s lasting impact on us and our children will not.

Whatever “family” looks like for you, embrace it. And if you’re not happy with how your family looks, do something about it. Create boundaries with people who are toxic or negative. Invite in people you respect and admire.

When it comes to our kids making friends, we often think they should know how to communicate their feelings and listen to others. We think empathy and respect should be innate.

In order for kids to develop meaningful friendships, they must have regular opportunities to play. They don’t have to be long, but they have to happen consistently. Think phone calls, Zoom chats, weekly play dates, or even postcards to stay connected.

As you begin to intentionally instill these qualities of friendship in your child, you’ll find that they learn to battle conflict in healthy ways. You’ll find that they start to recognize the good friends in their life. Most importantly, you’ll find that they start to become good friends themselves.

When it comes to our kids, we're all in. Not perfect, mind you. Not even close. More like doing the research, planning the adventures, and making sure their daily boxes are checked:

Play outside: Yep.
Schoolwork: Done.
Free time: Plenty.
Parent time: You got it.
Fruit: Demolished.
Veggies: Offered.
Books: Read and reread.
Current developmental struggle: Adequately stressed over.

Minimums met, I pat myself on the back and we end our day with Netflix and a load of dishes.

But what about our boxes? What about the things that are good for our souls?

The truth is: The less we care about ourselves, the less we're able to care for them. It makes sense, right? When our kids move beyond our everything to our only thing, we risk becoming demanding, short-tempered, and self-loathing. Go ahead and sneak a moment to yourself. Or boldly declare that you’re taking the day off. We’re behind you either way.

[05/01/21]   I can't believe it, but this coming Wednesday, May 5th is our final KidZone of the school year! We won't be having a program, but if you come at 5:10, you can certainly watch us sing and "graduate" our 5th graders (whom I will dearly miss)!!!

This year has been FAN-TAS-TIC! Loved how it all came together despite constant changes. Going to miss all the kids and volunteers. We will be having some special events this summer and I will post on here and email parents about the upcoming activities!

And this Fall... Lord willing, we most likely will be expanding KidZone (maybe not back to 100 kids), but more than we maxed out this year with.

Parents are busy these days. And we keep getting busier.

By the time we hit the pillow at night, we’re greeted with guilt, shame, and resentment for all the boxes we didn’t get to check.

What if instead of rehearsing all the things you got wrong, you ended each day by remembering all the things you got right?

Did the kids make it to school and practice? The family pet get fed? The power bill get paid?

You’re doing better than you think you are. Don’t overlook the wins, no matter how small they seem. They matter.

The world is full of critics, and your kids are destined to meet them. One of them doesn’t have to be you. Yes, we want our kids to grow up to be kind, loving, and responsible adults. There is a way, though, to impart all we’re meant to teach them without being hurtfully critical.

What our kids need most? They need a cheerleader. They need a hype man and hype woman. They need someone to be happy to see them succeed and cosign their “crazy” ideas. Be that person for your kids.

[03/25/21]   Remember, as a parent,
it should be your priority to get your children to heaven,
not Harvard!

[03/25/21]   First day of the new start time and without the bus, went really well with good attendance! Thank you all for getting the kids to the church for KidZone... I appreciate your willingness to promote spiritual growth in you children!!!

[03/23/21]   Just a reminder... NO BUS to KidZone tomorrow! And we start at 3:30, not 3:00 p.m. Drop off after 3:20 if you can.

[03/22/21]   KidZone begins again THIS WEDNESDAY, but at 3:30 p.m. Kids can arrive after 3:20 p.m. NO BUS SERVICE!!!

One of the quickest ways to lose influence with your kids is to parent without integrity. To threaten consequences, but never follow through. To be inconsistent. To fail to practice what you preach. To be someone you're not when you're outside the home.

If we want to maintain influence, we will parent with character. We'll keep our word. Enforce limits. Treat everyone with kindness. And work hard on our own character, every day, pressing forward each time we fail.

“Don’t feel sorry for or fear for your kids because the world they are going to grow up in is not what it used to be. God created them and called them for the exact moment in time that they’re in. Their life wasn’t a coincidence or an accident.

Raise them up to know the power they walk in as children of God.
Train them up in the authority of His Word.
Teach them to walk in faith knowing that God is in control.
Empower them to know they can change the world.
Don’t teach them to be fearful and disheartened by the state of the world but hopeful that they can do something about it.

Every person in all of history has been placed in the time that they were in because of God’s sovereign plan.
He knew Daniel could handle the lions den.
He knew David could handle Goliath.
He knew Esther could handle Haman.
He knew Peter could handle persecution.
He knows that your child can handle whatever challenge they face in their life. He created them specifically for it!

Don’t be scared for your children, but be honored that God chose YOU to parent the generation that is facing the biggest challenges of our lifetime.
Rise up to the challenge.
Raise Daniels, Davids, Esthers and Peters!
God isn’t scratching His head wondering what He’s going to do with this mess of a world. He has an army He’s raising up to drive back the darkness and make Him known all over the earth.

Don’t let your fear steal the greatness God placed in them. I know it’s hard to imagine them as anything besides our sweet little babies, and we just want to protect them from anything that could ever be hard on them, but they were born for such a time as this.”

No KidZone this week,
enjoy your "Spring/Winter/Snow (this week off)" Break!

I’m raising average kids.

They will not be going pro in any sport. They will not be the valedictorian. They will not be landing on the moon. And they will not be President.

But I pray that they will be extraordinary at love.

They will be the friend who makes homemade soup and delivers it when a family loses a loved one.

They will always return their grocery carts.

They will mow their neighbor’s lawn or shovel their snow-filled driveway just because.

They will know how to listen—especially to those who need it most.

They will make time to return phone calls.

They will still send cards on birthdays.

They will know how to forgive.

They will be empathy givers.

They will know how to say, “I’m sorry.”

They will know how to act vulnerable and cry in someone else’s arms.

Oh, and this one’s important—they’ll know how to love themselves by giving themselves grace, love, time off, and setting boundaries.

Yup. I’m raising average kids.

Average kids who will be extraordinary at LOVE.

Because the School District is changing the Elementary finish time to 2:30 p.m. and because the majority of our KidZone Leader Team are high schoolers and won't be getting out of school until 3:45 p.m., we are forced to change KidZone as of the 4th Quarter also.

So starting on Wednesday, March 24th (the week AFTER we are off because of Spring Break), KidZone WILL NOT be running a bus to pick up kids from the schools. We hate this, but it just isn't going to work. So KidZone will begin at 3:30 p.m. Parents will be able to drop their kids off from 3:20 - 3:30 p.m. and we will finish at the normal 5:30 p.m. We will be able to manage snack and free time with fewer volunteers and then by the time we start our lesson and game times, our teens will arrive from school.

We will be sending more info on the change in the weeks ahead, but wanted to give you a heads up!

Parents you have over 3000 hours a year (represented by the big tower of orange ping pong balls) to teach your kids about Christ. The church on the other hand has on average about 40 hours a year (represented by the small vase of ping pong balls) with your child to teach them about Jesus. Parents - you can't rely on church to be the only place they learn about God!

We had a SUPER FUN carnival yesterday as part of KidZone! After a snack of Domino's Pizza and a little free time, the kids played carnival games: Candy Walk, Pop Toss, Lollipop Tree, Outhouse Game, Face Painting and Wheel of Fortune and well as Bingo! We finished up with Celebration Time with a lesson on how God can transform our lives and then finished with praise and worship! The kids went home with lots of prizes and the leaders went home tired! It was a great afternoon!!!!
