Today’s lessons revolved around Valentine’s Day! Kindergartners and first graders sketched out Valentine bees and completed them with oil pastels and watercolors. They are looking more comfortable with both of these mediums and creating treasures! Second and third graders created Valentine love monsters. They scribbled, (yes, that was part of the lesson!), with their choice of warm or cool colors and added dimension by stamping paint with the edge of a piece of cardboard, learning that unorthodox techniques can be both fun and creative! Fourth and fifth graders created multi media, (both learned the term and practiced the technique), abstract art with hearts and patterns as a theme. Our young artists used watercolor painted paper they had created in last week’s class for the hearts and added their choice of colored pencil, markers, oil pastels and finished with a sponge stamped border. Nice work! The two younger classes added stamped paint hearts to their watercolors papers from last week as seen in the last few photos to finish their Valentines Day greeting cards. We sure do have fun!
A winter wonderland themed art class today! Fourth and fifth graders created oil pastel snowman at night drawings, learning about directional lighting, shadows and practicing color mixing and shading skills and how those add dimension. Second and third graders also used oil pastels for their catching snowflakes drawings. We talked about perspective as it related to the face and they showed their creativity in designing scarves and sweaters. Kindergartners and first graders created melted snowman mixed media pieces with stacked oil pastel snowman, (with cardboard pieces adding a 3D effect), construction paper carrot noses and stick arms on a watercolored background they painted last class. All classes also created a background paper for next week’s project by first painting with watercolors and then sprinkling with salt for a unique looking texture.

No School Thursday, January 14th due to weather. Flex Learning Day!
Evening conferences will be rescheduled!
Art classes had a winter theme! Fourth and fifth graders worked with oil pastels on this winter night and northern lights project. They explored the pastels soft and smooth texture and how one can blend colors and move the color on the paper. We discussed depth, texture and perspective and how they as artists can bring that to their work. Second and third graders also worked with oil pastels learning how they can add dimension and shape to a flat drawing by shading with their fingertips. So much individual character in these polar bears! Kindergartners and first graders did a directed drawing of penguins and added those to their bleeding art tissue paintings of northern lights from earlier last fall. Then they went wild adding everything from fish to snowflakes to flags! And even ice skates!
