Berkeley Buddhist Priory

Buddhist temple with Soto Zen meditation, Dharma talks, retreat, Buddhist services and spiritual counseling.

Berkeley Buddhist Priory is a Buddhist temple following the tradition of Serene Reflection Meditation, which was known as Soto Zen in Japan and Ts’ao-Tung (Chan) in China. The teaching and our practice emphasizes meditation, guiding our lives by the moral Precepts of Buddhism, awakening the heart of compassion, and expressing it through selfless activity in everyday life. The Priory is a temple of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC), an international Buddhist Order, whose North America office is at Shasta Abbey located in Mt. Shasta, California. The Founder of both OBC and Berkeley Buddhist Priory is the late Rev. Master Jiyu-Kennett. The Priory was established in 1973. The Priory offers a regular schedule of meditation, Dharma classes, Buddhist services, day-retreats, as well as spiritual consultation. It also offers meditation instruction and workshops for beginners. There are no fees for participating in above activities or any other services that the Priory offers. Like other affiliated temples of OBC, the Priory is financially independent; we are supported entirely by donations of our congregation and friends. For schedules and calender of events, please visit the Schedule page on our website www.berkeleybuddhistpriory.org or call the Priory for detailed information.

In mid-June the Priory was allowed to reopen to our normal schedule as long as we maintained social distancing. I am sorry to say, but due to the upsurge in covid-19 cases, the Priory required to be closed for all indoor services. We can still hold activities outside, in our yard.

The Priory will still be having part of our normal Sunday morning schedule outside. There will be a 9:30 meditation period. Then five minutes of walking meditation and another meditation period or service at 10:05. At 10:45, there will be a Dharma talk. Weather permitting, we plan to hold everything outside in our backyard.

The Priory will still be holding a day retreat each month which can either be done here in our garden or on Zoom. There will be a day meditation retreat on August 15 and September 12.

The Priory will continue to stream the Zoom talks. There is the Sunday talk at 10:45am and the Wednesday evening Dharma talk at 8:00pm. Also we will all have the Sunday meditation periods and services also streaming on Zoom.

[06/24/20]   The Priory is resuming all of its normal schedule. Social distancing should be able to be maintained as we will hold any large activity outside in the garden such as the Sunday meditation and Dharma talk.

Avalokitesvara Ceremony

Avalokitesvara Ceremony

There was the Priory's yearly ceremony for Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion, on Sunday, February 23. Compassion is central to our Buddhist practice and we both try to find compassion within our hearts and find the compassion that fills the universe. The Priory does a
very special setup for the service, line all the meditation hall walls with scrolls and other images of Avalokitesvara plus many statues of the Bodhisattva,

On Sunday, February 23, there was the Avalokitesvara ceremony. During the ceremony, everyone goes around the hall, bowing to each image of the Bodhisattva,
represents the myriad ways that compassion can manifest.

After the ceremony, the Priory had a Dharma talk by Rev. Kinrei, on compassion. At
around 12:00 pm, we had a wonderful vegetarian potluck lunch.

The Priory held it's Wesak celebration on Sunday, May 19. On Wesak, Buddhists throughout the world commemorate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is the most spiritually significant day of the Buddhist calendar and it is traditional for Buddhists to join together and express their gratitude for life of Shakyamuni Buddha and the great gift of the Dharma.

The Wesak ceremony is a particularly joyous service with an altar covered with silk flowers, and a statue of the Buddha as a baby which stands on the altar. During the ceremony we pour water over the head of the baby Buddha, representing the water of compassion abundantly flowing over all beings.

After the ceremony, the Priory had a Dharma talk. Then we had a vegetarian potluck lunch. The potluck provide a wonderful offering of foods, and allow us to spend some time with others who are practicing Buddhism.

On Saturday, March 30, we had our bimonthly workday. We have had some statues in our garage from a Vietnamese temple that had been closed. I have been meaning to find a place for them at the temple. This work day, among other tasks, we moved two of these very heavy marble statues into their new homes, on the grounds of the Priory. One is an Avalokitesvara statue which now is on top of the Priory gate, between the two dragons. A large marble Buddha is now on the altar in from of the Priory, replacing a smaller gold Buddha which has been there for close to twenty years. Due to the very heavy weight of these statues, we needed to rent a mechanical lift, with we we could crank the statues up to the top of the gate and also crank the Buddha over the fence in front of the Priory and then slid the statue onto the front altar. The task went surprisingly smoothly for which we were very grateful.
