St. Alban's Episcopal Church is a welcoming community of Christians in Albany, CA.

This group is for friends and members, and folks who are interested in St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Albany, California. Here you will find information and updates on happenings at St. Alban's.

Mission: The people of St. Alban's Episcopal Church are a welcoming community seeking to provide a comfortable and strengthening place for Christian worship; to care for one another and to reach out to those in need. We seek to know God in Christ Jesus, and to manifest the Gospel in our common life.

I would submit that it is time…for all of us to move to higher ground which is what the bible is about. There`s a passage in the bible that says, “Set me upon a rock that is higher than I.” And we must go higher. We must claim the law and the way of love for each other, unselfish sacrificial love, as the way in which we will help to bind this nation together, redress our wrongs, establish justice, and make this a land where there is equality and justice and decency for every human child of God.
~Bishop Michael Curry, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church

A Cure of Souls, by Denise Levertov
The pastor
of grief and dreams

guides his flock towards
the next field

with all his care.
He has heard

the bell tolling
but the sheep

are hungry and need
the grass, today and

every day. Beautiful
his patience, his long

shadow, the rippling
sound of the flock moving

along the valley.

I cannot tell you
how the light comes,
but that it does.
That it will.
And so
may we this day
turn ourselves toward it.
May we lift our faces
to let it find us.
May we bend our bodies
to follow the arc it makes.
May we open
and open more
and open still
to the blessed light
that comes.
How the Light Comes (excerpt) by Jan Richardson

Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light. ~Helen Keller

We bloomed in Spring.
Our bodies are the leaves of God.
But our souls...they are God's self.
~St. Teresa of Avila (edited)

Do you bow your head when
you pray or do you look
up into that blue space?
Take your choice, prayers fly
from all directions.
~Mary Oliver, from "Felicity"

Dear God, please reveal to us
your sublime
that is everywhere, everywhere, everywhere
so that we will never again
feel frightened.
My divine love, my love,
please let us touch
your face.
~St. Francis of Assisi

Six Recognitions of the Lord (excerpt)
by Mary Oliver

Oh, feed me this day, Holy Spirit, with
the fragrance of the fields and the
freshness of the oceans which you have
made, and help me to hear and to hold
in all dearness those exacting and wonderful
words of our Lord Jesus Christ, saying:
Follow me.

A recording of the EASTER SUNDAY SERVICE can be found here:

Risen by Jan Richardson (excerpt)
For Easter Day

Fill your lungs
with the air
this new
morning brings

and then
release it
with a cry.

Hear how the blessing
breaks forth
in your own voice,

how your own lips
form every word
you never dreamed to say.

See how the blessing
circles back again,
wanting you to
repeat it, but louder,

how it draws you
pulls you,
sends you
to proclaim its only word:

Diakonia: Jess the bridge builder – Episcopal Cafe

From soon-to-be Deacon Dani Gabriel! This is part five of a series on the diaconate we’re calling Diakonia looking at the amazing variety of voices within the ministry of deacons by diaconal candidate Dani Gabriel

[10/29/19]   Friends, if you find yourself needing to charge phones/access the internet, we've set up a charging station at St. Alban's, which will be accessible during work hours through 1 pm on Friday.

We are also compiling a list of local folks who are willing to offer a spare bed for folks who have been evacuated.

It's mercifully quiet and clear(ish) tonight, but reports are it may kick up again tomorrow.

Praying for the peace and safety of all!

Living with Jesus – Episcopal Cafe

Dani Gabriel is the best. That's all. Here's the first installment of Dani's latest project... I have been living with Jesus for a while now. My symptoms are an incredible, growing love for all people who have been pushed out into the margins; an overwhelming love for people on the borders of countries and communities; a love for people like myself who ARE the borders, between “normal” an...

Q&A With Dani Gabriel, Author Of A New Children's Book About A Trans Boy - Family Story

We are so blessed to have Dani Gabriel as our intern (and, in just over a month, serving as deacon with us and All Souls Episcopal Parish in Berkeley, CA)! Dani Gabriel is a queer/gender fluid poet and writer, and the author of a new children’s book, called SAM! The beautifully illustrated book tells the story of Sam, a young energetic boy who loves riding bikes and learning about the American Revolution. The only problem is that Sam’s family knows...

St. Alban's Episcopal Church

It is with sadness that we share news of the death of Barbara Ann Nicholas Counsell. (November 22, 1922 - April 10, 2019)

A member of our parish since 1953, among her greatest legacies was her selfless outreach to and advocacy for Laotian refugees resettling in the area in the 1970s. This includes pushing the Oakland Unified School District to create a policy (pre-ADA) to accommodate students with disabilities.

Barbara is survived by her three children (Fred, Melissa, and Stuart), 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. Alban's, likely in late May. Details to follow.

May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
