Alamogordo Public Schools is proud to announce Dr. Johnnie Walker as the new Director of Athletics. Dr. Walker has the skills, wisdom and energy to lead our athletic department to the next level of success. He is a Tiger who understands our rich history and shares the commitment we have to our students.

While growing up on Valencia Dr. at Holloman AFB, he discovered his passion for sports, playing football in the street, dodging cars and falling over curbs. A few of those friends from the Valencia Knights, as they called themselves, accept college scholarships and went on to play in the NFL. He became a dual athlete and a well-rounded student playing football and participating in field events at track meets. He was also selected 1st chair in the All-City Band.

His father is a Vietnam veteran that served 24 years in the Air Force, and toured as a singer performing around the world. MSGT Walker was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base for 12 years before retiring in Alamogordo. His mother served as a civil service educator at Holloman AFB and as an Accreditation Specialist for NMSU. “Family First” was instilled in Johnnie and his sister at an early age as they were celebrated by the Air Force as Family of the Year. His parents have just recently celebrated their 47th year of marriage.

In his high school athletic endeavors, he represented Alamogordo as an All-American Honorable Mention candidate. He was also All-State, All-District, and participated in the North- South All Star game. He accepted a full scholarship to New Mexico Highlands University. After a season, the former Highland Cowboy transferred to NMSU as a philosophy major to continue to pursue his dream to play in the NFL. He soon realized that his size would be his nemesis. He says “At the Division I level, his talent and speed were common place and the success he experienced in high school became humbling at the collegiate level. At NMSU he had the distinct honor to be a founding fraternity member of the Alpha Beta Pi chapter of Phi Beta Sigma before entering the world beyond undergraduate studies. In 2001, Johnnie graduated from NMSU with a BA in Philosophy.

Following graduation, Johnnie joined the United States Army, proudly serving at White Sands Missile Range. After his military service ended, Dr. Walker then began work at Alamogordo Public Schools as a Special Education Instructor at Alamogordo High School and Holloman Middle School. He decided to return to college to complete a Master’s Degree in Education Administration and interned with The APS Athletics Department under the legendary Lawrence Johnson while coaching football and track, at both schools.

Dr. Walker began his administrative career at APS as an interim Assistant Principal at Alamogordo High School before having the privilege to be the Principal of Academy del Sol High School. During the transition, he completed his doctoral studies with an Ed.D in Organizational Development. Dr. Walker stated that, “Academy del Sol is the jewel of the Tularosa Basin where success is not suggested, but expected. It is a place of learners today and leaders tomorrow.”

Dr. Walker has been married for 19 years to the beautiful Tiffany (Phillips) Walker, an English Language Arts instructor at Mountain View Middle School and is the proud father of 3 precious girls.

With his family, he established New Covenant Church in Alamogordo, which has been in operation since 2008.

It is needless to say that Black and Gold is imprinted in his DNA.

Dr. Walker’s ambition didn't grow out of nowhere. It was planted in him by the Alamogordo community that nurtured him.

Sister C. Elnora Conley Homegoing Celebration

For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. Romans 14:7-8. Today we celebrate the life of our beloved Sister Clemmie Elnora Conley. Her love for God, family and willingness to serve God has been a blessing to many.

The Homegoing Celebration of a faithful mother, friend, sister and saint.

General information

In September of 1955, twenty-five Christians had a calling on their lives to establish a place of worship. At that time, there was only one Black Baptist Church in the city of Alamogordo. So, they began to meet at the Prince Hall Lodge #11 located at 310 Delaware Avenue for Prayer Service. While it is good to pray, we all need to hear the words of the Lord. “And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent?” So a few weeks later, they chose the Carpenter’s Union Hall, located on Pennsylvania Avenue for their church services and then asked Reverend Frank Pinkney, a Methodist Minister, to preach for them. In October of 1955, an invitation was extended to local and district churches to participate in the formal organization of the church. Reverend H. B. Johnson of Fabens, Texas, served as Moderator of the meeting. A name was chosen, and “New Zion Baptist Church,” was accepted as the name for the church. The following officers were elected to serve as Deacons: Tyler Traylor, Elijah Johnson, Jr., A. V. Richards, Will Givens, Ebenezer Taylor, James Patterson, A. D. Burton, and Charlie Blake. In the same meeting, Sister Eliza Stewart was elected as the Church Clerk and Reverend I. Samuel Swisher of Las Cruces, NM was chosen as pastor of the congregation. A few months later, property was purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Jack Wagoner at 308 Maryland Avenue for the church construction. Mrs. Alice Swisher was very instrumental in assisting the church to obtain the property. She ensured all financial obligations were easily handled. Previously, a house located on the church-site was moved to the rear of the property to accommodate church services until the edifice was completed. Grounds Breaking Day was held on April 7, 1957. The church edifice was started later in June 1957. To pay for the land and the building of the church, the members sold dinners, cakes and pies. Everyone helped. Those that could cook, cooked. While those that could not, delivered the dinners. Word spreaded quickly throughout the city about the dinners that were being sold. Soon people were stopping by to pick up dinners or place orders for dinners to be delivered. On those days when they had no customers, the members purchased the meals themselves. They also donated money as well as cinder blocks to help build this church. The members knew that, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” So, they trusted God to guide them and to bless their endeavors. The Lord gave them the desires of their hearts and the congregation entered the new edifice on December 1, 1957 for the Corner Stone Laying Service. Reverend Frank Jones of First Presbyterian Church in Las Cruces, NM brought the message and Reverend Jack DeVore of First Baptist Church in Las Cruces, NM, gave the Charge to the church. Reverend J. H. Horton of Artesia, NM, served as the Master of Ceremony. By that time, the Church had approximately 175 members. There have been five ministers that have pastored at New Zion: Pastors I. Samuel Swisher, 1955-1964 A. T. McCargo, 1964-1972 Wilson Holly, 1972-1976 James A. Hopkins, 1976-1988 Willard L. Avery, 1988-Present Today, we reap the benefits of those twenty-five founding members. Many are gone home now, but two are still with us. They are Sister Rosa L. Lee and Sister Carnell Taylor. The Lord has blessed us to have Sister Rosa L. Lee and Sister Carnell Taylor still working here at New Zion in His vineyard. We thank God for our founding brothers and sis- ters. They started this work and it is up to us to keep on winning souls to Christ. We all have a job to do. We are no longer selling dinners, cakes and pies, but we are getting others sold on Christ. Let us continue to work for the Lord that He might be glorified, so that men shall see our good works and ask, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
