[08/02/20]   Crop growing rains have been a blessing to our area during the past week and we should praise and thank God for them. The abundance of very tasty local produce is evident and I hope that you are able to satisfy your desire for your favorites.
Tomorrow at New Horizons our Celebration of Worship, with the Sacrament of Holy Communion where we use individual disposable cups, will begin at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA as we explore the many nuisances of our Gospel text from Matthew chapter fourteen verses thirteen through twenty one and what it means to be hungry and who is able to satiate any manner of hunger. Everyone is welcome at our Table no matter where you are on your spiritual journey. There is plenty of room for everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[07/25/20]   Do you believe that "sweet corn season" is just an excuse to eat a stick of butter every day? The much anticipated garden vegetables are coming at us fast and furious; the only time that I lock my car is during zucchini season. In just twelve verses from the thirteenth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, thirty one through thirty three and verses forty four through fifty two, Jesus presents at a fast and furious rate five very meaningful and profound parables.
Tomorrow at New Horizons UCC, 141 Reed Street in Akron IA our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM and our Celebration will center on these verses and how they apply to our lives today. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed. Dress as you feel comfortable, there is plenty of room for everyone.
Stay cool my friends and safe travels.
Pastor Steve

[07/19/20]   Our friends in the southwest say, "It's 110 degrees here but it is a dry heat." We in the Midwest say, "It"s 100 degrees here and the humidity makes our glasses fog over when we leave our air conditioned comfort to go outside." Dry heat doesn't grow the crops that feed the world but humid heat does. That is one consolation I have for working outside this time of year.
The farmer in our Gospel text for tomorrow from Matthew chapter thirteen verses twenty four through thirty and continuing with verses thirty six through forty three illustrate the "long view" of a very dedicated steward of his land.
Tomorrow at New Horizons, 141 Reed Street in Akron IA our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed. There is plenty of room for all. Dress as you feel comfortable. After our Celebration we will be preparing "Take It, Make It" activity bags to distribute to children at the Akron Farmer's Market this coming Wednesday, last week we ran out after twenty so tomorrow we will be preparing twenty five!
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[07/12/20]   One of four examples in our gospel text for tomorrow, Matthew chapter thirteen verse eight, is very evident in our area today. In Jesus' time planting was a very random event with varied outcomes; today planting is a very precise and planned event to produce the best harvest over which mankind ultimately has a small amount of control.
Tomorrow at New Horizons our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. Our Celebration will focus on our gospel text from Matthew chapter thirteen verses one through nine and continuing with verses eighteen through twenty three. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed. Dress as you feel comfortable, there is plenty of room for all.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[07/04/20]   I hope that everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July Celebration today! This evening there is a full moon and a lunar eclipse, I hope that you are able to witness and be in awe of all three of these God ordained events.
Tomorrow our Celebration of Worship with the Sacrament of Holy Communion will take place at the main shelter house at the Akron City Park. Our Celebration will center on Patriotism and our Gospel text from Matthew chapter eleven verses sixteen through nineteen and verses twenty five through thirty. For our Sacrament of Holy Communion we will be using individual disposable Communion cups. Dress as you feel comfortable, invite a friend or two and join us.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[06/28/20]   Earlier today I attended a Graduation reception, I was cordially met at the door by the honoree, greeted warmly by the parents engaged in conversation with attendees that I knew and invited to enjoy some very delicious food; that is a model of extravagant welcome, one of the tenants of the United Church of Christ.
Tomorrow our Celebration of Worship beginning at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA you will be extravagantly welcomed as we explore the many meanings of our gospel text from Matthew chapter ten verses forty through forty two and how important it is to welcome everyone no matter where they are on their spiritual journey. Dress as you feel comfortable, there is plenty of room for everyone.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[06/26/20]   Thank you to the women of New Horizons who hosted our Women's Event with refreshments today, also to Lynette Kyger who presented a program on her vacation to Chile and Patagonia, all who attended and to Mateo Kitchen and Catering for furnishing the refreshments.

[06/21/20]   Challenge, challenging times are nothing new for Christians; for more than two thousand years followers of Our Lord and Risen Savior Jesus Christ have faced challenges that aren't even imaginable to those who wake up and believe "history starts today". Good or bad, history is a bell that has been rung, there is no such thing as "un-ringing" it. Learn positive lessons from all situations and teach them to the next generation through your actions and if necessary use words.
Tomorrow our Celebration of Worship beginning at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA will focus on the gospel text from Matthew chapter ten verses twenty four through nine and the challenge Jesus gives to His first followers. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed. Dress as you feel comfortable, there is plenty of room for everyone.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[06/14/20]   "You want me to do what?" This is a comment that I often hear on a construction site when the weather or conditions are less than favorable. I reflect on the many times that I have heard this comment when I study our scripture lesson for tomorrow from Genesis chapter eighteen verses one through fifteen and our Gospel text from Matthew chapter nine verse thirty five through chapter ten verse eight. The confidence that Our Still Speaking God has in us, His followers, is far greater than the confidence that we have in fulfilling His plans.
Tomorrow is Flag Day and we at New Horizons United Church of Christ located in Akron, IA at 141 Reed Street will begin our patriotic Celebration of Worship at 9:00 AM. Dress as you feel comfortable and use common sense. There is plenty of room for everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[06/07/20]   Every day has a new beginning and a new ending. We all hope that we wake up breathing but what will happen by the end of the day is a mystery that our Still Speaking God, out of His everlasting love for us, does not reveal to us. It is our obligation as a Christian to make the most of every day as God blesses us on this third rock from the sun.
Tomorrow our Celebration of Worship with Holy Communion will begin at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. The Celebration will focus on all three of our lectionary texts, one beginning and two endings; Genesis chapter one verse one through chapter two verse four, 2 Corinthians chapter thirteen verses eleven through thirteen and our Gospel text from Matthew chapter twenty eight verses sixteen through twenty. We will be using individual disposable Communion elements. There is plenty of space for everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite. Dress as you feel comfortable and safe. Everyone will be extravagantly welcomed!
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[05/31/20]   Hello FB friends of New Horizons, tomorrow is a very significant day and Celebration in the history of Christianity as we commemorate the day of Pentecost; Acts chapter two verses one through twenty one, the day when the Holy Spirit swept through a crowd of over two thousand as Peter preached the first sermon of this new religion.
Tomorrow at New Horizons we will Celebrate the history of this event in a new and exciting way! Our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. You are invited to wear red and will be extravagantly welcomed. This is an exciting day in the history of Christianity and I invite you to participate as you feel safe and comfortable. There is plenty of room for everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[05/24/20]   Jesus' comforting words of assurance from the Gospel of John chapter seventeen verses one through eleven as He was fulfilling prophecies in the exact order that would lead to His death should inspire every patriotic American to take time to pay respect to all of the men and women in Our Armed Forces who have selflessly sacrificed their lives that we are able to Celebrate Worship freely. God's Blessing to each of their sacrifices and mourning and support for the families they left behind. Tomorrow at New Horizons our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. There will be a definite theme of patriotism throughout our Celebration. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed, we have plenty of room and are handicapped accessible.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[05/17/20]   This is not great morel mushroom hunting weather however I have received a few from someone who "promised" to tell me where they got them next year. How deeply is the word "promise" and the fulfillment of it imbedded in your character?
Tomorrow New Horizons will begin their Celebration of Worship at 9:00 AM at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. The message will focus on the Gospel text from John chapter fourteen verses fifteen through twenty one and the depth and ramifications of the promise of Jesus in these verses. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they invite will be extravagantly welcomed. Dress as you feel comfortable, there is plenty of room for all.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[05/09/20]   An early "Happy Mother's Day" to all Mothers out there. We wouldn't be here if it were not for you! Thank you for all that you do!! Tomorrow our Celebration of Worship will begin at 9:00 AM, 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA. Everyone who reads this post and everyone they share it with will be extravagantly welcomed. Our Celebration will include all of the Revised Common Lectionary texts: Acts chapter seven verses fifty five through sixty, I encourage you to read the entire chapter, 1 Peter chapter two verses two through ten and our Gospel lesson, the first fourteen verses of the fourteenth chapter of John. The main theme that we will explore is "commitment" and how it defines our spiritual journey as a Christian in today's world. We will restart our Fellowship Time at a later date. There is plenty of room for all, dress as you feel comfortable.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[05/07/20]   Hello FB friends and followers, earlier today our Worship Team met via teleconference and decided that our Celebration of Worship will continue at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA this coming Sunday, 10 May, beginning at 9:00 AM with a tribute to our Mothers, present and past. We have plenty of space for all who wish to Celebrate Worship with us. Our Worship Center is handicapped accessible.
God's Blessing to everyone who reads and shares this post,
Pastor Steve

[05/02/20]   I'm posting early this evening my friends because I am so excited that our Worship Team this past Wednesday decided that we would Celebrate Worship with the Sacrament of Holy Communion tomorrow in our Worship Center, 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA beginning at 9:00 AM; please share this post as we have plenty of room for everyone who decides to join us. I have found a source for individual, disposable Communion sets that we will be using. Dress as you feel comfortable and safe and please honor the choices of everyone who attends.
Our Celebration of Worship will center on the Gospel text from John chapter ten verses one through ten and the power of the discernment of the sense of hearing.
Safe travels my friends,
Pastor Steve

[04/25/20]   The meaning of the word "normal" is very fluid in our society today; will we adjust to a "new normal" or with patience and God's Blessing of inspiration to each of us be able to return to a lifestyle that everyone enjoyed just a few months ago.
Tomorrow's Gospel text from Luke chapter twenty four verses thirteen through thirty five, focusing on verses 30 - 31a demonstrates how Jesus used the power of human senses to convince His followers that He Is Risen. In the first verses of our Gospel text Jesus appeals to His disciples' senses of sight and hearing to try to convince them that He is risen from the dead, however they did not believe; it wasn't until He appealed to their senses of smell and taste, the two senses related closest to memory, when He broke the bread and shared it with them that I believe brought back memories of The Last Supper to His disciples and then they believed that the Resurrection had occurred! Our Worship Center at 141 Reed Street in Akron IA is temporarily vacant however I pray that everyone who reads this will establish a new community of faith in their home until we are able to Celebrate Worship together again; that's how our Christian faith began. Our Celebrations of Worship are temporarily suspended yet our financial obligations continue, as you are able, prayerfully consider your support of our ministry and mission by sending your offering to New Horizons UCC, PO Box 431, Akron IA 51001. Remember that the teacher is always silent during a test.
God's Blessing to each of you,
Pastor Steve

[04/19/20]   Today I had to wait for the snow to melt so that I could mow my lawn. When we put God in charge and have total faith in Him we never know what to expect except everything "in God's time" happens for a reason that will be lovingly explained to us when we meet Him face to face.
Our Gospel text for tomorrow, John chapter twenty verses nineteen through thirty one really produces a "gasp" moment for the disciples when Jesus says in verse twenty one, "I am sending you". I believe that they looked at each other and thought, "Why us? We aren't prepared and should have paid closer attention to His teachings, we can't do this." In times like these, my friends, all of us are being deployed to "Be the Church" in a way that we couldn't have imagined six weeks ago. Our Worship Center is temporarily vacant however our ability to "Go Forth Share His Name" brings new opportunities; keep in touch with our Church Family with phone calls, emails, texts, IM or go "old school" and send a card or package. Our Still Speaking God will NEVER lead us to a situation through which HE is not also prepared to guide US. God's Blessing to each of you my friends,
Pastor Steve

[04/16/20]   Thank you to everyone who viewed our Easter Worship Service on YouTube. Our Worship Team met via tele conference today and we have decided to comply with our governor's edict to not gather to Celebrate Worship until the edict is rescinded. Although we aren't able to Celebrate Worship as a Community of Faith we still have financial obligations that we need to honor, as you are able please send your contributions to NHUCC Box 431, Akron IA 51001.
God's Blessing to each of you,
Pastor Steve

Hi FB friends, I'm elated that so many folks are posting their Sunday services on YouTube that we have to "wait in line" as soon as our link is available I will post it along with an Easter message. The YouTube link is: Https://youtu.be/E9j0FQUOKLA.
For thirty five years I have anticipated the congregational response, "He Is Risen Indeed" to my declaration, "He Is Risen!". Tomorrow that will not be what happens. I pray that everyone who reads this post will reflect on the Gospel text from John chapter twenty verses one through eighteen and all of the prophecies that are fulfilled to demonstrate to all mankind that Jesus is truly the Son of God. The worship center of New Horizons United Church of Christ at 141 Reed Street in Akron, IA will be vacant tomorrow because its participants are deployed as members of The Body of Christ with the charge to "GO FORTH SHARE HIS NAME!"
I pray that everyone who reads this post and everyone with whom they share it will have a safe, healthy and Happy Easter!
God's Blessing to each of you,
Pastor Steve
