We often hear that patriotism in the United States has decreased since the Vietnam War. One example is people failing to stand for and salute our flag. But we can teach our children and grandchildren respect for our country's flag, even before they start school. We can supplement and reinforce what they learn in classrooms later on.
But instead of just teaching our children the Pledge of Allegiance, we should teach them what it means.
Allegiance: The pledge is a promise to be loyal to our country.
Republic: We can decide whom we want to be our leaders.
Under God: God is sovereign and ultimately controls our government.
Indivisible: As our country's citizens, we stick together.
Liberty: Our goal in this country is for all of us to be free.
Justice: We believe everyone should be treated equally.
We ought also to teach our children the meaning of our national anthem and how to show respect when it is sung, as well as when the Pledge of Allegiance is recited or when the flag passes by in a parade. We stand at attention and face the flag, men and boys remove their hats, and we hold our right hands over our hearts.
Teach our children that we celebrate our nation's birthday because it is the day our forefathers declared that no other country could rule over us, and they risked their lives to do so, as have many others striving to preserve our freedoms since then. We have made mistakes, but we have learned from them, and we can rebuild patriotism by teaching our youth the rich history we have.
Thoughts from a newspaper column by Lois Schaefer.
