Mother's Day 2021 (edited version due to audio)
This morning I had the privilege of speaking at FCA at the High School. I shared from John 6:27, where Jesus said, “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on Him God the Father has set his seal.”
Jesus taught us that we are to seek the spiritual above the temporal.
Yet why does our society give the spiritual so little attention? Why do we constantly seek “food that spoils” above the “food that endures to eternity”? What are we teaching our youth to pursue?
I sometimes feel burdened for our community. We have teachers, counselors and schools promoting the Magnet programs, testing well, making good grades, and achieving scholarships; we have coaches and trainers promoting athletic ability through private lessons, travel sports, camps, classes, etc., we have all sorts of sports, fine arts, and hobbies that fill our schedules; we have programs promoting food assistance, eating healthy, better housing; we have businesses promoting all sorts of services and goods they tell us we need. There is noting wrong with these things. Jesus knows we need bread, but He taught us that we “don’t live by bread alone”. Who will promote the higher priority, the spiritual? What good is it if a “man gains the whole world but forfeits his soul”?
When I think about all this, I wonder and ask, Who is promoting spiritual life, the food that endures? Parents, community members, are you teaching and communicating the eternal things? You say, “our churches are promoting the spiritual food that endures”. Then I wonder, Why do pastors and youth pastors see so little of youth, and even their parents? It seems we are laboring for the wrong bread. FCA should be full for that FCA meeting was the higher bread, the most important meeting of the day; youth groups and churches should be full, do we truly believe that the assembly of believers worshipping is the highest privilege and priority?
Why as a society do we over-promote the temporal placing it above the spiritual? When will I, when will we, truly believe and follow the words of Jesus, the bread of Life?
Please don’t let the culture mis-define success for you. Success is not: get good grades, so you can go to a good college, then get a good job, have a good family, achieve many good possessions, have a good retirement, and then have your kids do the same. Then what? Then one day they look back over life and go, what was the point, I wasted my time seeking the temporal over the spiritual. Life is Christ, success is the daily pursuit of Jesus. Jesus is to be our first priority. Who is teaching, or will teach that? And sadly why are so few listening or even interested in doing so?
Yet, praise God, some do discover the secrets of the kingdom. Will you? Will your kids?
“Seek first the kingdom of God”. We have got to make that our first priority. When will we figure that out and act accordingly? – Pastor Eric
