*The Gift of Singing*
July 8

_What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also._ *1 Corinthians 14:15.*

The Lord is calling upon His people to take up different lines of missionary work, to sow beside all waters. We do but a small part of the work that He desires us to do among our neighbors and friends. By kindness to the poor, the sick, or the bereaved we may obtain an influence over them, so that divine truth will find access to their hearts. No such opportunity for service should be allowed to pass unimproved. It is the highest missionary work that we can do. The presentation of the truth in love and sympathy from house to house is in harmony with the instruction of Christ to His disciples when He sent them out on their first missionary tour.

Those who have the gift of song are needed. Song is one of the most effective means of impressing spiritual truth upon the heart. Often by the words of sacred song, the springs of penitence and faith have been unsealed. Church members, young and old, should be educated to go forth to proclaim this last message to the world. If they go in humility, angels of God will go with them, teaching them how to lift up the voice in prayer, how to raise the voice in song, and how to proclaim the gospel message for this time. YRP 198.3
Young men and women, take up the work to which God calls you. Christ will teach you to use your abilities to good purpose. As you receive the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit, and seek to teach others, your minds will be refreshed, and you will be able to present words that are new and strangely beautiful to your hearers. Pray and sing, and speak the Word....

God wants His people to receive to impart. As impartial, unselfish witnesses, they are to give to others what the Lord has given them. And as you enter into this work, and by whatever means in your power seek to reach hearts, be sure to work in a way that will remove prejudice instead of creating it. Make the life of Christ your constant study, and labor as He did, following His example.

DON'T MISS THE INSPIRED MESSAGES FROM OUR LORD GOD

Pastor Ted Wilson

Happy Sabbath! Today we look at three interesting and important questions:

• If Ellen White was ordained, why not ordain women to the gospel ministry?
• Who can preach during the divine worship hour?
• Is it OK to drink a little alcohol as long as you don’t get drunk?

Q: How can we be so backward as a denomination as to not ordain women? How can you continue this division in the church when Ellen G. White herself was ordained? — Brenda, from the United States

A: Brenda, you might find it helpful to know that according to the Ellen G. White Estate, Ellen White “was never ordained by human hands.” During her unique prophetic ministry, since the Church did not (and does not) have “prophet credentials,” they granted her the highest credentials available—that of an ordained minister (sometimes with the word “ordained” crossed out).

However, this does not mean she was ordained—there is no record of any ordination service for her, nor did she carry out the responsibilities of an ordained minister. For more on this topic, please see “Was Ellen White an Ordained Minister?” at: http://bit.ly/wasegwordained

Secondly, the decision to not ordain women to the Gospel ministry is a collective decision that has been made by thousands of delegates from around the world at three General Conference Sessions—in 1990 (not to ordain women to the gospel ministry), in 1995 (not to allow a variance for the North American Division), and 2015 (not to allow a variance in any world division).

Just as a local conference or union president is bound to follow what has been voted in his constituency session, as General Conference president, I am bound to follow and support what has been voted (three times) by the world church in session.

This does not mean, however, that women are not important to gospel work! They are vitally important! And God calls everyone to be a part of His Great Gospel commission—to reach others for Him. This is what Total Member Involvement is all about—everyone, everywhere, doing something for Jesus! If you aren’t yet involved, I invite you to visit http://tmi.adventist.org to see how you can become involved today.

Q: Can children or unbaptized adults be the main speaker in the divine worship service?
— Alfonso, from the Philippines

A: Alfonso, the Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual highlights the importance of the worship service, and contains instruction as to who may occupy the pulpit. It states:
“The Sabbath worship service is the most important church meeting. Here members gather weekly to unite in worshipping God in a spirit of praise and thanksgiving, to hear the Word of God, to gather strength and grace to fight the battles of life, and to learn God’s will for them in soul-winning service. Reverence, simplicity, and promptness should characterize the service” (p. 121).

Recognizing the importance of the worship service, the Church Manual stresses that “the pulpit must be reserved for the preaching of the truths of the Divine Word and the presentation of denominational plans and policies for the advancement of the work of God, not personal views and opinions” (p. 120).

Considering this instruction, church pastors must be very judicious as to who is allowed to preach during the worship service. Only those who have shown their commitment to Jesus and have shown that commitment by being baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church should be considered to preach in our churches on Sabbath morning. Furthermore, it should be an individual whom the pastor believes would be faithful in preaching God’s Word to the flock.

Sometimes the church may hold a special children’s or youth service during the divine worship hour. During these special services children or youth may present the sermon. In addition, children and youth are also very effective evangelistic preachers and God works through them in reaching others for Him. In both cases however, the children or youth should be selected carefully and work under the direct guidance of dedicated local church leaders.

A word about the Church Manual—this official manual is produced by the General Conference Secretariat and can only be modified by a vote of the General Conference in Session.

The Church Manual is very useful in understanding the operation and functions of local churches and their relationship to denominational structures. It also “expresses the Church’s understanding of Christian life and church governance and discipline based on biblical principles and the authority of duly assembled General Conference Sessions” (p. 16).

The Seventh-day Adventist Church Manual is available to everyone as a free download at http://bit.ly/2downloadchurchmanual

Q: Is there a Bible verse that says you shouldn't drink? In class today someone said that the Bible says you shouldn't get drunk, but it doesn't say “don't drink.” — Mawethu, from South Africa

A: Mawethu, the Bible says both without contradiction—don’t get drunk and don’t drink! Let’s consider a few texts:
“Wine is a mocker,
Strong drink is a brawler,
And whoever is led astray by it is not wise” (Proverbs 20:1).

A few chapters later in Proverbs 23:29-35 we read a very vivid description of what happens to people when they drink alcohol, and I encourage you to read it.

When Jesus turned the water into “wine” at the wedding of Cana, we can be assured that it was pure, delicious grape juice, rather than fermented, alcoholic wine.

“The wine which Christ provided for the feast, and that which He gave to the disciples as a symbol of His own blood, was the pure juice of the grape. To this the prophet Isaiah refers when he speaks of the new wine “in the cluster,” and says, “Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it.” Isaiah 65:8.
It was Christ who in the Old Testament gave the warning to Israel, “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Proverbs 20:1. And He Himself provided no such beverage. Satan tempts men to indulgence that will becloud reason and benumb the spiritual perceptions, but Christ teaches us to bring the lower nature into subjection. . .
“It was Christ who directed that John the Baptist should drink neither wine nor strong drink. It was He who enjoined similar abstinence upon the wife of Manoah. And He pronounced a curse upon the man who should put the bottle to his neighbor’s lips.
“Christ did not contradict His own teaching. The unfermented wine which He provided for the wedding guests was a wholesome and refreshing drink. Its effect was to bring the taste into harmony with a healthful appetite” (The Desire of Ages, p. 149).

So Mawethu, I want to encourage you, and all young people, to stay completely away from anything—including alcohol—that will cloud your bright, keen, God-given mind. May the Lord give you strength to be a bright light for him, just like Daniel and his three friends were in Babylon (see Daniel 1:8, 11-17).
