This week is very special and emotional as I celebrate a special MCM Livingstone David Zijjan. We met in Jinja round about 2004. I am not sure what brought us together but he stuck out like a sore thumb in the crowd. He was doing things at YWAM and running a church/ministry reaching hundreds of orphans and widows. We ministered together in our very youthful days and he made my days in Jinja memorable. Getting closer to David I discovered he didn't have much conventional education but boyyy he was smart, intelligent, argumentative with a rhetoric gift and very visionary. We joked about him being a lawyer many days but we didn't make anything of it. He came from a very poor background but here he was giving education, life and hope to people he had no attachment to. It was hard to fathom what God was doing in his life but it was moving. We dreamt of globe troating when we didn't have passports and at some point after traveling lots we confirmed our destiny was home in Uganda. David made a decision to go back to school in a very bold way. The picture of him in Jinja S.S.S school uniform in 2015 was daunting and yet one of courage and sheer mental strength. Today 17th May 2021, David is graduating with a Bachelor of Laws(LL.B) from Makerere University and on Thursday 20th May 2021 he will be sworn in as Honorable Member of Parliament for Butembe County. I celebrate you this week my friend Honorable Counsel David Livingstone Zijjan. Because you didn't give up, many of us are aspiring to scale great heights. I celebrate Sarah your dear wife and children who have weathered every storm with you. Congratulations my learned friend.

WORK HARD TO STAY RELEVANT!!

FOUR STORIES TO START:
1. Nokia rejected Android.
2. Yahoo rejected Google.
3. Kodak turned down digital cameras.
4. Blockbuster rejected Netflix.

LESSONS:
1. Take risks.
2. Accept the change.
3. If you refuse to change over time, it will become obsolete.

TWO MORE STORIES:
1. Facebook takes over WhatsApp and Instagram.
2. Grab takes over Uber in Southeast Asia.

LESSONS:
1. Become so powerful that your competitors become your allies.
2. Reach top position and work smart with competition.
3. Keep innovating.

TWO MORE STORIES:
1. Colonel Sanders founded KFC at age 65..
2. Jack Ma, who couldn't get a job at KFC,
He founded Alibaba and retired at age 55

LESSONS:
1. Age is just a number.
2. Only those who keep trying will succeed.

LAST BUT NO LEAST IMPORTANT:
Lamborghini was founded as a result of the revenge of a tractor owner who was insulted by Enzo Ferrari, the founder of Ferrari.

LESSONS:
Never underestimate anyone, ever!
Just keep working hard.
Invest your time wisely.
Don't be afraid to fail.

Lessons learnt during House Construction:

If you see unbelievable low labour costs on a quotation, never celebrate. Your materials will always cover up the gap and therefore the work quality will be compromised.

If a friend claims that he/She will offer free supervision costs on your behalf due to your busy schedule, never celebrate. S/he will cheat you to the bone marrow.

Hiring a qualified engineer is much better that a village Fundi, yes their labour costs are high but they do quality work, otherwise for a village fundi you will always re-do whatever they touch on either months after or years and maintainance is costly.

Hiring a stranger is much better than a friend or a relative.

If your builders complain of poor payment, please always listen and if possible add something. A demoralised employee can never deliver quality work.

You rather take long and construct your best, than rushing because you want to run away from rent. Trust me you will regret in future as neighbours sorround you with mansions while your children question you why you opted for boys quarters. Actually neigbours will always want to buy you out, its simply mean you dont fit in that community.

Never compromise with quality because of costs, you will pay more in maintainance in the mere future.

If possible be the supplier of materials, and just agree with the engineer on labour costs. It reduces the level of temptation being exposed to the engineer.

If you are to make quality supervision, have a basic understanding of the architectual design and if possible the structural as well.

Never doubt/ refuse engineer's advise when you have no facts/informed suggestions. You may regret later.

It does not make you a better supervisor to be so keen, noisy, critic of your workers. Instead it may expose your ignorance, only talk when you have facts.

Saving with a reliable nearby hardware shop saves millions of stress

Those are my lessons, probably you could be having different ones, after all experience varies from person to person.

IMPORTANT Notice for those intending to travel out of Uganda:

02/11/2020

Good morning Everyone,

SECRET OF WINNERS IN LIFE

In the jungle;

1. The Elephant is the biggest;
2. The Giraffe is the tallest;
3. The Fox is the wisest;?
4. The Cheetah is the fastest;

Yet, the LION is the KING of the jungle even without ANY of these qualities.

WHY?

Because:

1. The Lion is courageous, is bold, walks with confidence, dares anything and is never afraid.
2. The Lion believes it is unstoppable.
3. The Lion is a risk taker.
4. The Lion believes any animal is food for him.
5. The Lion believes any opportunity is worth giving a trial and never lets it slip from its hands.

So...

1.You don't need to be the fastest.
2.You don't need to be the wisest.
3.You don't need to be the smartest.
4.You don't need to be the most brilliant.
5.All you need is COURAGE.
6. All you need is the WILL TO TRY
7.All you need is the FAITH to believe it IS POSSIBLE
8.All you need is to believe in yourself, that you can do it.!!
9. The Lion never walks alone! It is the only big cat that lives, hunts and eats in groups. This quality demonstrates that we all need each other to succeed, be it in a family, neighbourhood, workplace, church and the nation at large!

NEVER WALK ALONE!

Stay in the Lion's mood!
That's the mood for winners, AGE IS NOT A BARRIER.

Do you know that lions only succeed in a quarter of their hunting attempts — which means they fail in 75% of their attempts and succeed in only 25% of them.

Despite this small percentage shared by most predators, they don't despair in their pursuit and hunting attempts.

The main reason for this is not because of hunger as some might think but it is the understanding of the “Law of Wasted Efforts” that has been instinctively built into animals, a law in which nature is governed.

Half of the eggs of fish are eaten... half of the baby bears die before puberty... most of the world's rains fall in oceans... and most of the seeds of trees are eaten by birds.

Scientists have found that animals, trees, and other forces of nature are more receptive to the law of "wasted efforts".

Only humans think that the lack of success in a few attempts is failure... but the truth is that: we only fail when we "stop trying".

Success is not to have a life free of pitfalls and falls... but success is to walk over your mistakes and go beyond every stage where your efforts were wasted looking forward to the next stage.

If there is a word that summarizes this world, it will simply be: continue all over again.
