Planting Seeds

Today’s Testimony
Here is a believer’s Testimony about tithing: “Like many people, I was very skeptical about tithing, until about three months ago I decided to take God’s challenge. Ever since the time I started tithing I have seen God move mightily in my finances. I received two salary increases, the first was 5% and the second was 15%. And I now have perfect peace in my life. I now know that God surely honors His tithing principle. I will continue tithing until the Lord calls me home.

2 Corinthians 9:6-11
Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

Do you know those people in your life that are just super generous? Like, every time you eat lunch or drink a soda together, they never let you pay. Or if you need some help with something, they’re the first ones to show up. And they are always there, with a smile on their faces? They are happiest when they can help out or when they get the chance to give. Such people should inspire us, and they spur me onwards. When I read these verses, it makes me think of these people. It also reminds me that generosity multiplies, that generosity brings out happiness, and that generosity returns to you.

1. Whoever sows generously will also reap generously

First, generosity multiplies. The Bible loves to use lots of agricultural parables, and this one is no exception. Think of generosity like a seed. Seeds are fascinating. If you stick one little seed in the ground, up grows either a flower, or a tree, or a veggie plant that just seems to keep growing and growing and growing. Just 4 or 5 tomato plants can harvest about 20 tomatoes a week for a month! That’s what this verse is all about – sow generously – plant lots of seeds. Give to lots of people, give to your friends, to strangers, to your coworkers – whoever! And to whomever, you give, give lots to them! Don’t always think in terms of giving money (although giving money is good too), we can write them cards of encouragement, we can give people smiles, we can give people prayers, we can give people healing who are in pain and much more. Plant those seeds. You can’t control what happens once you plant those seeds, but with time, sunshine, and rain (good times and bad) – those seeds will break open. Soon enough, little green shoots will start to appear in the lives of those you’ve loved. Those seeds will just spill over and the harvest will be plentiful! That generosity will multiply beyond your wildest dreams in the lives, hearts, and “soil” of the people you’ve blessed!

2. Give what you have decided in your heart to give, for God loves a cheerful giver,

Second, generosity brings out happiness. Sometimes, we get so worried that if we give some money here, or volunteer time there, that we won’t have time or money for something else, or someone else. Well, you’re right that by saying “yes” to one thing, in that very moment, you are also saying “no” to everything else. And that’s what this verse is encouraging you to embrace; it’s okay! Don’t be scared to say “yes,” don’t be scared of “missing out” on something else. God placed you at that moment in time, presented you with that opportunity, asked you to give in that very situation and, if it’s something that you feel called to, then enthusiastically say “yes” without looking back! Be happy. Enjoy the moment.

3. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion

Third, generosity returns to you. Don’t be scared that once you “use” your time or money by giving it away that it will then be “gone”. No. Money comes and goes. Did you give it away? You’ll have more someday. Time keeps coming. If you give away a minute, then another minute will follow right after that. Once again, remember, you can choose to give it away or spend it on something else. Not only that, but God promises that the more generous you are, the more you’ll be given so that you can keep on giving!! What?! That’s a crazy promise. He doesn’t promise that generosity will make you rich, nope. He just promises that if He can trust you as a generous steward of His gifts, He’ll just give you more gifts to steward for others!! Wow, don’t you just want to be used by Him like that?

Application:
What seeds can you “plant” in the lives of others? God asks us to be cheerful givers, to decide to give, and then just to follow it through on it without a second thought or a worry. When a thought crosses your mind to give, do you have the courage to follow through? Why don’t you put a smile on your face and just go with the flow and give!

Hidden Riches

Today’s Testimony
Here is an incredible story about a believer. Their testimony is about how unexpected finances started flowing into their life as soon as they began tithing. Listen to their story. “I wouldn’t have believed it if it didn’t happen to me personally, so I want to share my story, JUST IN CASE, someone is on the fence wondering whether tithing will work for them or not. I started tithing even though, I am unemployed and did not have much in my savings (I still had rent due soon, etc.), but decided to do tithe anyway…because I felt in my heart it was the right thing to do. Then just FOUR DAYS LATER in the mail I received a check for UGX1,600,000 from one of my banks which has been mistakenly charging me some strange fee for YEARS and is now refunding it to me with a grand apology!! Not too long after this, I received another letter in the mail that was one from a previous employer telling me I still had some stock shares they had forgotten about, and if I would sign their form they would send me a check for UGX5,000,000! This is so amazing. I am so blessed. Nothing like this has ever happened to me! And it FEELS good…especially during a time when I am feeling helpless about my financial situation! I now encourage you to just tithe and then forget about it and feel good that you gave back to Lord and see what He will do. You will soon see the miracle for yourself!”

We believe that the Lord brought these hidden monies out of nowhere, because of this believer’s obedience to give to the Lord.

Nehemiah 12:44b
From the fields around the towns they were to bring into the storerooms the portions required by the Law for the priests and the Levites, for Judah was pleased with the ministering priests and Levites.

Those offerings and contributions were given with pleasure. The Scriptures carefully inform us that offerings mean nothing if they are not given cheerfully. If you are not giving with pleasure, God does not want your gift. He does not care how big or small it is. If all you are after is to make an impression on others by the size of your gift, God is not interested in that. Jesus told of a widow who put two tiny pieces of money into the treasury, saying that she had given more than all that the rich people had cast in that day. God would have picked up that insignificant amount and use it more mightily than He would the larger gifts of the wealthy. What God looks for always is a note of pleasure, of delight, of cheerfully returning funds to him out of a thankful heart.

The closing sentence of this paragraph says, “They also set aside the portion for the other Levites”. They were careful to take care of others who were not able to be there or who were busy performing and therefore did not have the opportunity to share in the offerings. This is a beautiful picture of the oneness of the nation of Israel. God was constantly seeking to teach these people that they belonged to each other. They were not individualists, doing their own thing, but they were workers together with God. I do not know any truth that is more important in the body of Christ than to recognize that God uses people different from us. We must recognize that our way of serving God is not the only way but that we belong to and need one another.

Application:
What motive is at the true center of our heart in our giving? Are we so grateful for God's gifts to us that we give willingly, cheerfully, generously, and with compassion?
