THE MOST WONDERFUL PROMISE EVER MADE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" John 3: 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" John 3: 16 is by common consent the greatest verse in the Bible and it seems a true fact that to attempt to say anything else about this inspired sentence would not do justice and yet if by trying to learn a bit more we are enabled to see a little more of God's wonderful plan of redeeming love then it will be worthwhile. Note: Redeeming or Redemption mean "to buy back". To buy back from what? To buy back from the slave market of the bondage of sin. Why is it that this verse is so universally looked upon as the greatest verse in the Bible? Perhaps there are two reasons: Reason # 1: """"""""""""" Is that no other verse is so full of the Gospel (Good News). It consists of only 26 words and yet it contains a complete survey of the story of God's redemption for His creation. Reason # 2: """"""""""""" Is that this verse is looked upon as the greatest verse in the Bible and is surely because no other single verse of scripture has been blessed to the salvation of so many souls. Here then we have the greatest statement of the Gospel in the shortest possible space and the theme is the wonderful, amazing love of God. (Note: The Devil and the FASE PROPHETS led by the Devil Hate these 26 words!) This wonderful verse is divided into three sections: Description of three types of love: A. The brotherly love (Philo). B. The erotic love (Husband and wife). C. The sacrificial love (Agape or God’s love). SECTION # 1: (5 points) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: THE CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD'S LOVE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" What kind of love is God's love? We have the answer to this in the words "For God so loved the world". What does it mean, let’s notice the following points: Point # 1: GOD'S LOVE IS A DEVINE LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" It is "God" who loved the world. The only love that we know anything about apart from the revelation contained in this verse is human love but God, Who is the author of all human love is the greater lover who is mentioned here. His love is a divine love, for "God" is love. 1 John 4: 8 "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love" 1 John 4: 16 "And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love, whoever lives in love lives in God and God in them" God's love is the greatest love in all the world. Point # 2: GOD'S LOVE IS AN UNSPEAKABLE LOVE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" We not only read that "God loved the world" but that He "So loved the world". The little word "So" shows us the intensity of God's love but how intense it is none can say. Nowhere does the Bible attempt to define God's love, it only illustrates it and John 3:16 is the greatest illustration. John 3: 16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" Look how the Apostle Paul describes it in: Ephesians 3: 18 - 19 "May have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide, long, high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." Point # 3: GOD'S LOVE IS AN ETERNAL LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" We read that "God so loved the world". When did His love begin? God's love had no beginning because God Himself had no beginning. It is not true to say that God did not love us until Jesus died for us. The fact is that God loved us and because He loved us he sent His son, the Lord Jesus to die for us. This is what our verse tells us. Look at what Romans 5: 8 says concerning God’s love: Romans 5: 8 "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" God's love is an everlasting love: Jeremiah 31: 3 "The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness." Point # 4: GOD'S LOVE IS A UNIVERSAL LOVE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" "God so loved the world", not just some part of it but all of it. Have you ever thought of the miracle of a universal love? Think of the millions of people in the world, people of all kinds and colours, good and bad and yet God loves them all. He does not love us only when we are good and hate us when we are bad, but He loves us all the time, but of course He does not love our sins (when we cheat on our wives or when a wife does the same, when we tells lies, cheat, hurt our families and cheat on our income tax and so on. The love of God is broader than the measures of man's mind and the heart of our eternal God is most wonderfully kind. Point # 5: IT IS AN UNMERITED LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" Note: This is where the teachings of the other world’s religion gone wrong thinking that they can earn God’s love. When we remind ourselves that God loves "The world", we at once realize how unmerited His love is, for there is nothing lovely in any of us for him to love. The word "world" Refers to the lost: Luke 19: 10 "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Refers to the perishing: 1 Corinthians 1: 18 "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. " Both these verses refer to the world (mankind) that is separated from God by their sin. SECTION # 2 (3 points) :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: In the first section we learn about the "Characteristics of God's love", now we see how God's love manifests it self. THE MANIFESTATION OF GOD'S LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" How did God's love show itself? How do we know That God loves us? God's love for us is declared in the words "He gave his one and only son" Let us notice the following points: POINT # 1: GOD'S WAS A PRACTICAL LOVE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" We read in the verse that God "Gave His Son" Love must express itself and love expresses itself by giving. Love is an action word. The friend, the lover and the parent all express their love by their giving. The proof that God loves us is that He gave His son to be our saviour. The verse does not say "God so loved the world that he sent His son". This might mean that He came to do a special work that He actually did that work but that what He did, did not affect us in the slightest way. The fact that God did not only send His son but that He gave His son shows us that God has once and for all bestowed this great Gift upon us and He will never withdraw the Gift: Romans 8: 32 "He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will He not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?" POINT # 2: GOD'S LOVE WAS A UNIQUE LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" God's gift was that of "His one and only Son". The manifestation of God's love was therefore unique. Think of the method He employed of conveying His love to us, He gave his own son. This is the very heart of the message of the gospel. This is the meaning and the significance of the incarnation: Galatians 4: 4 - 5 "But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship" 1 John 5: 11 - 12 "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." POINT # 3: GOD'S LOVE WAS A SACRIFICIAL LOVE: """"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" God not only sent His son but we are told He sent "His one and only son". If God had ten sons and had sent one to be our saviour this would have been a sacrificial Gift but He had only one son and He gave Him. And so He gave His all. Think what it cost God to give His one and only son, not only to live a perfect life upon the earth but to suffer and to die upon the cruel cross, to be "made sin for us": 2 Corinthians 5: 21 "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." SECTION # 3 (3 points) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: So we have seen the "Characteristics of God's Love and Manifestation of God's love" now we will see the "Purpose of God's love" THE PURPOSE OF GOD'S LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" What was God's great objective in sending His son into the world? This question is answered in the words "that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life". Let us again notice the following points: POINT # 1: THE BREATH OF THE PURPOSE OF GOD'S LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" This is brought out in the word "whoever". This does not mean everyone but it does mean anyone. With the word "whoever" we can go to anyone and tell them that God loves them. There are some people who think that salvation has been provided for only a certain number of people and therefore we must be careful that when we preach the gospel we preach it only to those people. But God loves everybody, everywhere. POINT # 2: THE BLESSEDNESS OF THE PURPOSE OF GOD'S LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" This is brought before us in the words "shall not perish but have eternal life". Everybody, everywhere, who does not believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is perishing and will perish after death but God has given Jesus Christ to save us from perishing and when we come to Him and trust Him as our Saviour we have the assurance that we shall never perish: John 10: 28 - 29 "I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. " We are not only saved from perishing but to life eternal. POINT # 3: THE LIMITATION OF THE PURPOSE OF DOD'S LOVE: """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" God's offer of salvation is unlimited on His side but often it is limited on man's side, unless we believe, we will miss the blessing that He offers, for it is the man or the woman who "believes in Him" who is saved from hell and who receives the gift of eternal life. What, then does it mean to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? This is the most vital question we could ask ourselves, for we are only saved as we believe. To believe in the Lord Jesus Christ is to accept Him, to receive Him as our personal Saviour, as John 1: 12 makes it perfectly clear: John 1: 12 "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" Note: if we do not believe who Jesus Christ is, that He is the son of the living God and Saviour of the world and follow the teachings of the false prophets who are led by the Devil, then we must ask ourselves this question, who's children are we? So we have taken a tiny glimpse at the most wonderful promise ever made. Are you rejoicing in God's love? Have you received His wonderful gift of His Son Jesus the Saviour of the world? Do you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Are you resting in the assurance that you have passed from death to life? "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" Note: If we have received God's Son Jesus as our personal Saviour, then know this that if we should die this very moment or when we die we will at once go to be in the presence of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5: 5-8 "Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord" Psalm 116: 15 "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his faithful servants" AMEN!
