Emmaus Centre is a Catholic Institute for Discipleship and Evangelization found in Kasana- Luweero Diocese. It is located 55kms off Kampala on Bombo – Gulu

Emmaus Centre Katikamu has its roots, in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal and remains part and parcel of this world wide ecclesial movement. This Institute for Discipleship and Evangelization was founded in 1990 by Rev. Fr. Ernest Sievers, MAfr., together with Mr. Joseph Aonu Okiror, the vision carrier. In 1988, Joseph was sent to Rome to follow a four-month course on Evangelization at the International Catholic Programme for Evangelization (ICPE) after which they were sent to Augsburg in Germany for practical evangelization. This program made a deep impact on his life and upon his return, Joseph strongly proposed that a similar school be founded in Uganda in order to offer young lay people an opportunity to deepen their Catholic faith and motivate them to pass on the Gospel of Jesus Christ clearly, effectively and boldly wherever they are.

Mission: Emmaus Centre exists in order: 1. To foster continuous conversion and renewal within the body of Christ - the Church through on-going formation. 2. To produce committed Christian disciples of Jesus Christ who will influence society with Gospel values in accordance with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

Weekly Devotional
Running the Path for Christ: Are you a spectator, or running the race?

Written by Gary Fleetwood on 11/08/2020
Series: Weekly Devotional
Tags: Discipline, Perseverance, Sacrifice, Race, Endurance and forgiveness.

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.

1 Corinthians 9:24

When I was in college many years ago, I played soccer for a team that was very successful. The men recruited were highly skilled players who understood the game. However, I quickly learned that no matter how skilled someone was, they really had no lasting value to the team if they were not willing to do what was necessary to stay in great physical shape. The same is true for the spiritual race that we find ourselves in as Christians. If we are going to be successful spiritually, then there are certain qualities that must be developed in our life, and each one of them is similar to what is required of an athlete.

What do I need to do in order to win a race?
Training to win a race or a contest requires several aspects but I will mention four specific qualities – discipline, endurance, forgiveness and sacrifice.
Am I just a spectator? Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…”

The first thing we notice is that we are in a spiritual race. Unfortunately, many Christians are not in the race, but are just spectators watching other Christians actually run the race. They have a nice seat in the stands, have bought some refreshments, and are sitting in the shaded area just watching everyone else run the race. They simply have not understood that the Christian life is a “race” that has been “set before us”.

The Christian life is described as a “race”
In 2 Timothy 4:7 Paul says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” So, it is critical that we understand what a race requires. Every athlete is someone who must prepare and train for their event – and that is not an easy task. When I played soccer in college, every day we ran several miles before even starting our practice. Why is that? It is because our coach understood that no matter how talented we may have been in our soccer skills, if we were not in shape physically then we would not have the kind of endurance needed to last an entire game. So, in order to develop that endurance, we had to maintain a high level of self-control and discipline. We had to carefully watch our diet, we had to get proper rest, and we had to train and workout every day. We had to have a mindset that was willing to endure the physical pain that was necessary to get into shape and stay there. All of this required constant sacrifices of how we spent our time and where we could go. Becoming what we needed to be to win the game simply required personal sacrifices.

Besides, no matter how fit your team is, there will always be moments of loosing the game to the other team. This can be extremely hurting and disappointing especially if you had done all your preparation well only to be beaten all the same. It is usually one of those days you don't want to face your supporters or sponsors. At times you sit on the field and just cry knowing that cameras enjoy that moment.
If you are not strong and disciplined, you can cause more havoc by either abusing the referee or your opponents. What is necessary in such situations is again to forgive yourself, your team, your opponents and the other supporters as well and life continues.

Do I really want what Christ offers?
In the same way, every believer must understand the significance of developing spiritual endurance in their life. Just as training for a race is not easy, in the same way the Christian life is not easy, and it takes a high level of spiritual endurance that many Christians do not have and are not willing to pay the cost to have. We simply must exercise personal discipline and we must come to terms with learning how to lay aside those things that are actually hindering us in our faith and in our walk. Just like the committed athlete, this will require many different and personal sacrifices as well. So, the question that we must answer is simple – do we want the prize that Christ wants us to have? If we do, then we must develop the resolve, and determination that will help us make the necessary sacrifices to gain the endurance that we need to run the spiritual race set before us.
It is also always crucial to check out that as a Christian, am not holding anybody who hurt me, that am always ready to forgive my opponent, myself or even God, especially in certain instances where I feel that even God was silent or not there when I needed Him. Forgiveness frees us from self imposed prisons and opens doors for healthy physical and spiritual fitness. Of course on our own we can't forgive from the heart but with God's grace, we can. This is healthy living because in forgiveness hinders or progress as Christians to fulfill our great assignment of bringing many people to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Pray this week:
Father, I pray, will you please help me to develop the spiritual disciplines, sacrifices, endurance, and resolve to always forgive myself and others as this is necessary in honoring you with my life.

Do we have the kind of personal resolve and determination that should be driving our lives and helping us to be disciplined, sacrificial, forgiving and develop the endurance necessary to win the race set before us?

If yes, praise God but if not pray to God for help to overcome obstacles to what we discussed above.

Always remember that God has already given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has this life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

- 1 John 5:11
Let us strive to live meaningful lives here on earth so that after this life, we shall not be ashamed but join the rest of our ancestors in the faith to enjoy eternal life.
God bless you and thanks for enduring to read this to the end now be resolved in discipline to put into practice some of these lessons and you will certainly be a winner!

*First Reading*

*Wis 12:13, 16-19*

_You give repentance for sins._

*A reading from the Book of Wisdom*

There is no god besides you who have the care of all,
that you need show you have not unjustly condemned.
For your might is the source of justice;
your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all.
For you show your might when the perfection of your power is disbelieved;
and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity.
But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency,
and with much lenience you govern us;
for power, whenever you will, attends you.
And you taught your people, by these deeds,
that those who are just must be kind;
and you gave your children good ground for hope
that you would permit repentance for their sins.

*Responsorial Psalm*

86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16

R. (5a) Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are good and forgiving,
abounding in kindness to all who call upon you.
Hearken, O LORD, to my prayer
and attend to the sound of my pleading.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

All the nations you have made shall come
and worship you, O LORD,
and glorify your name.
For you are great, and you do wondrous deeds;
you alone are God.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

You, O LORD, are a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity.
Turn toward me, and have pity on me;
give your strength to your servant.

R. Lord, you are good and forgiving.

*Second Reading*

*Rom 8:26-27*

_The Spirit intercedes with inexpressible groanings._

*A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans*

Brothers and sisters:
The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness;
for we do not know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.
And the one who searches hearts
knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because he intercedes for the holy ones
according to God’s will.

*Gospel Acclamation*

cf. Mt 11:25

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth;
you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

*Mt 13:24-43 or 13:24-30*

_Let them grow together until harvest._

*A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew*

Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying:
“The kingdom of heaven may be likened
to a man who sowed good seed in his field.
While everyone was asleep his enemy came
and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off.
When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well.
The slaves of the householder came to him and said,
‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field?
Where have the weeds come from?’
He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’
His slaves said to him,
‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds
you might uproot the wheat along with them.
Let them grow together until harvest;
then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters,
“First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning;
but gather the wheat into my barn.”’”

He proposed another parable to them.
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed
that a person took and sowed in a field.
It is the smallest of all the seeds,
yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants.
It becomes a large bush,
and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’”

He spoke to them another parable.
“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast
that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour
until the whole batch was leavened.”

All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables.
He spoke to them only in parables,
to fulfill what had been said through the prophet:
I will open my mouth in parables,
I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world.

Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house.
His disciples approached him and said,
“Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”
He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man,
the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom.
The weeds are the children of the evil one,
and the enemy who sows them is the devil.
The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire,
so will it be at the end of the age.
The Son of Man will send his angels,
and they will collect out of his kingdom
all who cause others to sin and all evildoers.
They will throw them into the fiery furnace,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.
Then the righteous will shine like the sun
in the kingdom of their Father.
Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

*Or: [Shorter Form]*

Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying:

[07/18/20]   Apology, Apology,Apology.

Dear brothers and sisters, tonight we will not be live with our usual Saturday evening programme .

[07/18/20]   Apology, Apology, Apology

Tonight we will not be live on our page.

[07/18/20]   Apology, Apology, Apology

Tonight we will not be live on our page.

[07/18/20]   God didn’t make you in His own image, breathe life into you, crown you with favor, so you could barely get by. He created you to soar, to set new standards, to take new ground, to go further than you’ve imagined.

[07/18/20]   God is getting you ready to go higher, to see new levels of influence and favor. Don’t complain about the difficult times; that’s when you discover what’s in you. If you’ll keep the right attitude, instead of breaking you, the pressure will develop you.

[07/18/20]   f you could only see what God put in you, the courage, the strength, the determination, the fortitude, you would realize you can handle the challenges that come your way. You’ve been designed to withstand.

[07/18/20]   MORNING PRAYER

Lord, I lift my hands up to you in praise and surrender my life to you this morning! I take my hands off every problem, every situation and circumstance that I'm trying to fix on my own. Lord Jesus, I cast all of my burdens on you. Open my eyes to see that you know what is best for me. Strengthen my faith to take you at your word. Rise within me that I may boldly declare your truth. Cast out fear, remove all doubt, block unbelief and cause an unwavering trust to be stirred within me. Amen 🙏🏽

*Faith over fear*

Nelson Mandela: "After I became president, I asked one day some members of my close protection to stroll with me in the city, have lunch at one of its restaurants. We sat in one of the downtown restaurants and all of us asked for some sort of food."

"After a while, the waiter brought us our requests, I noticed that there is someone sitting in front of my table waiting for food"

I told then one of the soldiers: go and ask that person to join us with his food and eat with us. The soldier went and asked the man so. The man brought up his food and sat by my side as I asked and began to eat. His hands were trembling constantly until everyone had finished their food and the man went. The soldier said to me: The man was apparently quite sick. His hands trembled as he ate!"

"No, not at all," said Mandela.

"This man was the guard of the prison where I was jailed.

"Often, after the torture I was subjected to, I used to scream and ask for a little water.

"The very same man used to come every time and urinate on my head instead".

"So I found him scared, trembling, expecting me to reciprocate now, at least in the same way, either by torturing him or imprisoning him as I am now the president of the state of South Africa."

"But this is not my character nor part of my ethics".

"The mentality of retaliation destroys states, while the mentality of tolerance builds nations".
