Who is a refugee?

Is anybody listening to them and should we care?

In such a time of the pandemic and lockdown, what is really going on in their lives, psychologically, emotionally?

How can Rotary/Rotaract intervene and what opportunities are there for sustainable projects in impacting refugees' lives?

For all these questions and more,

Making a Mark through Rotary International.

In the year 1945, after the World War 2, there was a great humanitarian crisis. Over 60 million people had been displaced and this comprised of about 15 million refugees. Fast forward to 2021, with Conflicts all around us, either Tribal, Political or Religious and the ever-increased occurrences of Natural Disasters, it is with no doubt that this day and age has seen the greatest humanitarian crisis in history that surpasses the World War 2 situation.

Currently there are over 82.4 million persons displaced, 26.4 million of those are refugees, that is according to the UNHCR report at the end of 2020. And according to ranking, Turkey hosts the highest number of refugees;4 million, followed by Colombia with 1.7 million refugees and then Uganda comes in next with 1.4 million refugees. Statistics prove that the highest percentage of those affected are youth who are under the age of 25 years old and the region that is affected most by this refugee situation in Africa.

As an organization focusing on the refugee population in Uganda, Refuge and Hope International’s mandate is to help refugees recover from the effects of war and conflict, rebuild their lives and train leaders who will cause a change in the society. In our work we partner and work alongside amazing individuals and organizations that help us achieve this goal.

As 2019 was coming to a close we saw an opportunity to have our vision reach out to more refugee youth and have more people to support and help in transforming the lives of refugees, so we formed an Institutional based club under Rotary International called Rotaract Hope Kansanga, the 1st ever Urban Refugee Rotaract Club in Uganda, the 3rd refugee hosting nation in the world. The focus of Rotaract Hope Kansanga is to serve the refugee population and give them the ability to be part of projects under Rotary International that will directly transform their lives. We also desire to create a platform for refugees to openly share any issues that they believe the world needs to hear, and it’s also to bridge the gap between refugees and the host community.

In the midst of the global pandemic Rotaract Hope Kansanga went against all odds to get fully registered and Chartered, there for Taking a Stand and making a mark as the 1st Urban Refugee Rotaract Club in Uganda. As we commemorate the Refugee Month, we look forward to having the official Charter Celebration after the Covid19 Lockdown as we this new a dawn in the refugee fraternity and possibly in History.

Today we had a training led by Willow International, alongside Refuge and Hope International, on the ongoing issues of Human Trafficking.

Both refugees and members of the local community can become victims of human trafficking. We are glad to have our students and staff take part in this amazing session.

Live. Learn. Lead

We minister alongside refugees in East Africa who have fled their home countries. We work together to rebuild refugees’ lives in Kampala, Uganda, by offering courses in English (the official language of Uganda,) reading, writing, Bible, computer, and other academic subjects that will equip them for jobs or advanced education opportunities. We also strive to empower refugees to realize their potential by offering skills training, leadership, business, and entrepreneurial courses to help them qualify for jobs or start businesses that will enable them to earn a living wage so they can support themselves and their families. Since many refugees have experienced or witnessed traumatic events, we also provide counseling and individual or group support to help heal emotional wounds and restore hope.
