DAY BREAK DEVOTIONAL

Friday, 14th May 2021.
The worthy wife brings honor to her husband;
Text: Proverbs 31:23-24

Nothing is mentioned about the husband of the good woman, save for the fact that he is seated at the gate of the town, which is a reference to leadership. The husband is an elder, a judge among the people. Few wives have husbands who are elders, judges, or leaders. But having a husband who is a leader or judge is not a requirement for a woman to be a wife of fine character. However a wife of noble character does give the husband/elder added honour in the eyes of his fellow citizens. Even if the husband is a simple man of humble circumstances, a wife of noble character will bring her husband honour (Prov.12:4).

This is the same attitude Jesus Christ had about serving His Father. Christ’s life and work brought honour to His Father. It is very easy for us not to be willing to give honour, nor to be pleased when others receive honour. We want to be the ones receiving honour. But when working for someone else, one of our responsibilities is to be honourable, so that our employers are honoured. Even as you would honour Christ, so you must honour those who are over you in authority (Eph.5:22-24 applies to everyone). For Christians, working for others will be as worship whenever we bring honour to our employers.

Meditate on verse 23. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, let my choices bring honor to my family and glorify Your name. Amen.

The excellent wife is wise in her business deals;
Text: Proverbs 31:16-18

Madam Excellence shows wisdom when she handles money for business.
In the buying of a field, she does not simply rush into property ownership.
She considers it; meaning she wants to be sure that the property will serve
the interests of the family and provide a good financial return, in this case a vineyard. The passage says she girds herself, which means she is well-prepared to go to work and work hard. She has become strong – wise and successful in the care of her family. Indeed, the lamp does not go out, all needs have been anticipated and met.

Though we are speaking about a wife of noble character in this proverb, this is just a reflection of the care given to us by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

All our needs are known by Him, and they are met by His grace. In His work of redemption, we are being conformed into His likeness. Christian wives should have this kind of character, but the traits we read about in this woman also apply to husbands, and to all believers. When we maintain these noble traits of dedication and strength in our service to the Lord Jesus Christ, to our families, and to others, we worship the Lord in our work.

Meditate on verse 16. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me be diligent with the resources
you have given me. Amen.

DAY BREAK DEVOTIONAL

Tuesday, 11th May 2021.
The excellent wife provides for her family;
Text: Proverbs 31:13-15

This woman is diligent about her work of providing for her family. She intentionally seeks for the right materials, refusing to accept some other product or something of lesser value. When she finds what she needs, she eagerly and gladly makes garments for her family. Comparing her to merchant ships is a huge compliment.

A community is excited when they see merchants arriving. This woman’s family is even more elated when they see her out looking for goods and making things, because her family knows that most of her creations are for their benefit. This kind of service will be perfected by Christ’s people in His eternal Kingdom, even as Christ provides the needs of His people.

Service to others is the work of Yahweh’s sustaining grace. Humanity is generally self-focused (that is why Adam and Eve made coverings for their naked bodies). But God's grace given commonly to all humanity causes us to look to the needs and enjoyment of others, even as God does. However, all of us still have a lot of selfishness. When we do our jobs, it is very easy to do only the minimum required, to complain, to be envious of others, to work only for our self-interests. For work to serve as worship, you must work hard for your employer, assist your colleagues, have your family’s well-being at your heart, especially by bringing home ALL the wages (keeping nothing for self), giving the tithe to the Lord, and helping others whenever possible.

Meditate on verse 14. How are you going to apply it to your life?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, make me like a merchant ship bringing goods from afar to my family. Amen.

DAY BREAK DEVOTIONAL

Friday, 7th May 2021.
The sluggard’s way of life brings him death;
Text: Proverbs 21:1-31

One of the nice things about the Proverbs is the use of the writing method called parallelism. That means, the author will write something in one line and then say the same or opposite thing in the next line. In the verses for today, the sluggard who craves is the opposite of the righteous person who gives.

The sluggard is always trying to satisfy his desires, lusts, pleasures, etc., but he is never satisfied. Chasing after the things of this world will never satisfy. But the righteous person seeks the things of God, gives to others, and is always satisfied, in this life and in the one to come.

The lesson of the sluggard is always difficult for us to learn. We err, fail, and sin regularly. We live in the world; worldliness and worldly people are all around us, attracting us, tempting us. The problem is not the things. The problem is in our hearts; our desires and affections. The Redeemer Jesus never paid heed to the things and ways of the world. His love and focus were only on the Father’s will and in serving others. In order for our work to serve as worship, let us all be people who are the same as Christ. In your work, do it with thankfulness in your heart and to the glory of God, for the well-being of your family, and for the opportunity to help others.

Meditate on verses 25-26. What is God teaching you in these verses?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, help me to work with my hands so that I do not become a disgrace. Amen.

DAY BREAK DEVOTIONAL

Thursday, 6th May 2021.
A warning about being slack in our work;
Text: Proverbs 18:1-24

Two days ago we read in Proverbs 12 about the lazy person, a person who has little interest in his duties. Today is a related thought, but somehow different.

Here we are encouraged not to be “slack”. This person is neglectful of his
responsibilities. When a job is done, whether it is at work or a fun project
at home, it must be done to the best of our abilities. This does not apply to
salvation, because there is nothing we are able to do. Only Jesus Christ could do everything He was mandated to do, and He did it all perfectly.
However, when we have some other task to do, we must do it to the best of our ability and interest (Col.3:23). If not, the job might be jeopardized, someone’s safety could be jeopardized, etc. If the Lord asked you directly to do some small thing, you would surely do it well and neglect nothing.

That is how we are to think of everything we do – as if we were face to face with Jesus. Well, we do not see Him, but He sees us! If you hired someone to do a job for you, you would expect the person to do their best. Therefore, that is how you should work for others. And even if there is no one else involved do it well, because you always want your work to be as worship.

Meditate on verse 9. What is God teaching you in this verse?
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, transform the people who are lazy to
work harder for their living and to the glory of Your name. Amen.

Our Story

All Saints’ Cathedral Kampala (ASCK) is a city Parish of Kampala Diocese and is the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala who is also the Archbishop of the Province of the Church of Uganda.
