Prophets Hear What God is Saying and They Proclaim His Message
In our sweeping through the Bible seeking to have an overview of these past 6,000 years, we come to the prophets. Since the days of Moses there have been prophets - but it is when we come to around the year 700 B.C. that we have various books written by the prophets.
Previously the words of the prophets are included in the content of the historical books.
The prophets were very ordinary men - but they were given a BURDEN or ORACLE or WORD - which they spoke or preached or proclaimed or shared.
The prophet not only spoke for God - but he first had to hear from God. We have to receive before we can give.
The prophets basically challenged the people of God - and occasionally confronted kings - or the priests - or false prophets.
They also comforted the people - and that is also part of New Testament prophecy.
Jeremiah has become a nickname for doom and gloom - Jeremiah prophesied serious and sad words – all of which came true.
If someone calls you a Jeremiah, and that is true - then that is a great compliment - it means you are speaking forth the Word of God.
The people thought Jesus was Jeremiah! Matthew Chapter 16.
In the prophets we learn about GOD.
We learn that God is powerful - that HE is a GOD of miracles - that HE intervenes in history - that HE raises up men - that HE judges men and nations, even His own chosen people - that HE is a GOD who pardons and shows mercy.
The prophets indicate how personal God is - and how GOD draws near to His people - and that HE speaks to people.
Isaiah - we looked at his testimony - and we know precisely when he lived. This is one long - very long - book - and we have a scroll of this book - I have seen it in Jerusalem. It is dated around 100 B.C.
Let's take one famous verse – Chapter 2 verse 4 - "They shall beat their swords in plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks". That is outside the United Nations building in New York. But - look at the whole verse - "He shall judge among the nations". This was sung at Donald Dewar's funeral - and I remember thinking - these people have not a clue as to what these words mean.
The first part of the verse is essential before the second part of the verse can happen!
When Jesus walked onto the world’s stage, Jesus preached from Isaiah 61 – and saw the fulfilment of that prophecy in his coming into the world – Luke Chapter 4.
Isaiah - Jonah - Joel - Amos - Hosea - Micah - Nahum - Habakkuk - Jeremiah and Obadiah - they were all before the Exile.
They heard from God – they heard what God was saying at that time – and they had the courage and ability to proclaim and preach what the people needed to hear – and often a great cost.
“Lord God Almighty, open us to the prophetic Word – open our hearts and minds to what You revealed to ordinary men, many years ago. We thank You for their boldness and courage – and for the truth and truths they delivered. We thank you for these details regarding the coming of Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord. At this season of Passover, when we recall what lies at the centre of our Christian Faith – O loving Father, we give thanks for the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ – and all that that means – may we never lose sight of what lies at the heart and core – we pray in Jesus Name. Amen”

Through the Bible – Genesis’ Early Chapters
In these “Word from Scotland” pieces, I want to do something quite different. Seventeen years ago, I was asked to attempt to sweep through the Bible in ten weeks – impossible! Sometimes it might take me that long to cover a few verses – however we did it – but here goes!
Through the Bible in Ten Weeks – impossible? And yet it is good - now and again - to seek to sweep right through The Word of God.
The Bible is not one book but 66 books.
The Bible begins with GOD. This is a book about GOD – and in every book in this book we learn something about GOD - about ourselves - and how God would have us live.
The Bible does not try to prove the existence of GOD. The Bible begins with GOD.
At the beginning, the Bible tells us about Creation - how GOD created - and everything was perfect - and how things went wrong.
Creation is not a secondary Doctrine. These opening Chapters are fundamental to - sin - how sin came into this world - what went wrong - how sin marred this beautiful Creation of GOD. Creation is fundamental to marriage - to clothing - and to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
All fundamental doctrines are dependent upon Genesis.
Ephesians and Romans and the Gospels refer back to Genesis - all the later writings have no problem with Genesis.
Who cares if we take Genesis literally? Jesus cares. He refers in John to the writings of Moses. Paul cared - he quotes from these writings frequently.
Man was created in a perfect environment - and things went wrong. We hear it said today that if only we can improve man's environment, we will improve the way man acts and behaves. That is not true.
In these opening Chapters of Genesis, we have man being created in a perfect environment - and the coming of sin and its tragic consequences – and the coming of pain and death.
We have here the account of the beginning of the Universe - of our world - of life - of man - man's origins.
We have the beginning of nations - languages - the people of God, the Jews - Israel – and from that people comes Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Lord.
We have here the answers to many and various questions. Where did Cain get his wife? Genesis 5 verse 4 tells us. The race was so pure at this time that there were as yet no degenerative genes - and of course the law does not come along until the days of Moses. There then arose a genetic reason. But when Cain took his wife there were not the accumulated genetic weaknesses at that time.
We can defend the authority of Scripture from the very first verse.
There was a curse - and our brains and bodies have suffered 6,000 years of the consequence of the curse.
Other favourite questions are - Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? Is there a GOD? Was the Flood not just local? How long were the days in Genesis Chapter 1?
But then things did begin to degenerate fast - and we come to one of the saddest verses in the Bible – Genesis 6 verse 6. But God found a man - righteous - and God called and used this man, and his family.
This is always God's way. He looks for a man and calls a man and works through that man to rescue and save and bless.
There was a flood - it was universal - everything was lost - except the eight aboard the ARK - and the animals which were brought to Noah.
Chapter 8 - GOD remembered Noah - He renewed His relationship with Noah - and the first thing Noah did when he came out of the ARK was worship. And God made a Covenant with Noah.
It is after that we read of the beginnings of nations - and how man tried to be so clever and build a tower and reach up to God. We know roughly what this tower looked like from others which were built around that time - and the European Parliament is built on this model - and European man has said, "We will complete what they began." We will go without GOD. We no longer need GOD. We have economics and money and banks and the power of political argument and debate.
But none of that is effective when man faces a tsunami - AIDS - earthquakes - and other disasters.
God came down and confused their languages – Chapter 11 - until they could no longer communicate with one another as they had been doing. They babbled, and they were scattered.
It was at that point that GOD decided to do something which lies at the very heart of our world situation today. He called a man by the name of Abraham - end of Chapter 11.
If it is some time since you have read these opening Chapters of Genesis, please take time to do so – God always has a special blessing for those who make time to read His Holy Word.
Now - we have covered some 2,000 years since the time of Creation.
I am often asked – when Moses wrote all this down, how did Moses know? Psalm 103 verse 7 tells us - God made known His ways to Moses.
There are answers to every relevant question.
“Almighty God – help us to read Your Word – and to study it. Enable us to understand the Bible. You gave the Bible so that ordinary men and women could understand and be rescued and saved by Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Saviour and Shepherd and Lord. Help us at this time to enjoy that deeper and deepening communion and fellowship with You – and with one another – in Jesus Name.” Amen.

The Many Benefits Arising from a Regular ‘Quiet Time’
There is no better way to start your day than by having a ‘quiet time’ with God – and let our gracious God set the pace and the agenda for our day. It was the Perth City Mission Superintendent who introduced me to a “Quiet Time” - and the Latin/Greek teacher, leading Scripture Union on Friday mornings, who encouraged it.
People do not call it a ‘quiet time’ for nothing.
If God did not want to talk with you, He would not have given us the Bible. If God did not want us to talk with Him, He would not have given us the desire to pray.
It is obvious – but sometimes the obvious things are not so obvious.
Matthew 11 verses 28 and 29 from the ‘Message’ - “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me – watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.”
Work and Rest – it became one of the themes we learned at Crieff many years ago.
We have to SLOW DOWN to read God’s Word - “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realise what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” II Timothy 3 verse 16.
These are words for life – words of love – words of light – words of comfort – words of encouragement – words of reassurance – and these words can change our lives from the inside out. God gives us His word and we respond in all kinds of ways.
God can meet you in any book of the Bible – on any page – from any Chapter – as we take time to slow down and read part of His Holy Word.
One friend said he was going to read through the whole Bible in one year – from the book of Genesis to the book of MAPS! Very few people can keep that up and get through it in one year – and they can become guilty.
Bible reading and prayer are not two separate activities. They are two parts of a conversation. You find a quiet place – and you read – and you talk to HIM.
Matthew 6 verse 6 - again, from the ‘Message’ – “Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense His grace.”
Keep prayers simple – “Lord, here I am – I want to hear from You – will You speak to me – open my eyes – open my ears – open my mind – speak to me.”
Read for DEPTH not for DISTANCE. It is not a race – it is more an exploration.
“But the man who looks intently (SLOWLY) into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does.” James 1 verse 25.
If you want to be blessed this is how to read God’s Word. This is what Bible Meditation is all about – mulling it over in our mind.
You cannot meditate upon Scripture quickly – you cannot look intently in a hurry – there is a difference between a deep gaze and a quick glance.
Psalm 119 verse 11 - “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Reading the Bible keeps you from sinning. The Word goes deep within us, and this begins to change how we act and live and behave.
SLOW DOWN TO HEAR GOD’S VOICE – What is in this for me? Isaiah 50 verse 4 – “He awakens me morning by morning; He awakens my ear to listen as a disciple.”
Of course, this can apply to any time of the day – It does not necessarily have to be in the morning – but we do have to guard our time – and set aside some time during the day.
When God speaks to us it is seldom like a PUSH – it is more like a PULL. – He pulls us – He draws us to come closer. He calls us to come closer to HIM.
Come on Moses, you can do this – lead My people out of Egypt.
Come on Mary, you can do this – My people need a Saviour.
Come on Peter, – step out of the boat – come to me - I am calling you.
God speaks to us through his WORD.
Hebrews 4 verse 12 – “The Word of God is alive and active. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”
God speaks through His Creation – the mountains – the water – the stars – the colours and patterns – the singing of the birds of the air.
Romans 1 verses 19 to 20 is written to believers in Christ - “What can be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people are without excuse”
God speaks through His still small voice – think of Elijah.
I Kings 19 verses 11 and 12 “. . . And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”
God did not show up that day in a spectacular way – He spoke in a still small voice – a whisper.
God came into Elijah’s cave – God was so close in that cave that all He had to do was whisper.
God is not afraid to come into our cave – He is willing to come and speak to us about our fear – our anxiety – our pain – our disappointment – our addictions – our temper – our deepest need.
Emmanuel – God with us. Remember - that is one of the profound messages regarding Jesus Christ coming into our world.
SLOW DOWN TO RESPOND IN PRAYER -
Psalm 5 verses 1 and 2 - “Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.”
Three different ways of praying in two verses – words – sighing – crying.
Our ultimate objective and goal is not to study about Jesus Christ - but to spend time with Him.
RELAX – slow down – be still – open you heart even before you might open your Bible.
READ - Psalm 119 verse 18 - “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”
We are reading for depth – not distance. There is a lot to see as well as learn.
REFLECT – Think about what you have read – ponder - Psalm 119 verse 97 - “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long.”
Luke 2 verse 19 – “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”
It can be most helpful too to write things down – it can turn the grey into black and white – and it gives a record of what you have read or learned – or where you have been in God’s Word.
Pray - We then can bring matters that may be concerning us that day. 1 John 5 verse 14 - “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
I heard this a few years ago – “Some may be concerned that they fall asleep when praying – if you do, do not worry – no father ever became angry if a child fell asleep in his arms.”
Slow down – relax – read the Scriptures – consider what you have read – meditate and ponder – and pray, with thanksgiving.
“Loving gracious Father – help me to put much of the above into practice – help me to hear what You are saying and teaching through the Scriptures – hear my praying. Strengthen me – uphold me when I find life challenging and tough – fill me with Your love. Holy Spirit, lead me and guide me and keep me serving – in Jesus Name. Amen”

A Radio that speaks Bible
In the Ghetto Slums of Kamwokya is where we found the humble family of “Omukaikuru” as they called her.
Led by the Church Women leader and the Assistant Vicar St. John’s Kamwokya, we got to Omukaikuru’s humble home. No sooner had she seen the women leader than she shouted with all joy “Oooooh it’s today you promised to bring for me a new radio that reads the Bible, and here you are”.

Our Story

The Bible Society work begun in Uganda as early as 1894. During this time, the Bible has been translated in more than 20 Ugandan languages. With the Church at the center of our work, we reach out to the marginalized and sensitive groups; these include the Blind, the Deaf, the refugees, Prisoners, Elderly, Youth and Children and Women. We advocate for them as we bring God’s life giving Word to them as well.

Our dream is to see a Bible In Every Home, Hand, Heart, Hotel and Hospital. As part of the family of the United Bible Societies, we desire that people are able to access the Word in a Language of their choice.

We invited you to be part of this big dream!
