In many conservation initiatives, conservation of natural resources has often been interpreted as setting aside big chunks of land or water, devoid of human impacts and designated as protected areas.
Such areas would be managed in such a manner that there would be as little human influence as possible
and nature would be allowed to take its own course.

However, with time, the ‘setting aside’ model has been found to be lacking in as far as;
a) It has proven to be too expensive if not impossible to manage such areas as ‘no go
areas’ for human beings and
b) The model seems to promote destruction of natural resources outside the protected
areas as it creates an impression that what is important is what is within protected areas
and the unprotected can be destroyed.

Therefore, it has become imperative that conservation or management of natural resources should be broadened to embrace the empowerment and engagement
of communities to participate in the natural resources management.
With SRSRU/ BfW, the project is using the 'community conserved areas models' as a way of empowering communities and bestowing on them the responsibility of designing, planning and implementing the management plans of areas important and critical for their livelihoods to safeguard the natural resources and the tenant biodiversity. This is happening in Minziro, Kyotera district.

20/09/2020

The objective of establishing community conserved areas can only be achieved if local
communities understand the importance of these natural resources from their own
perspectives and not from the science point of view. Through a cultural analysis
process, the cultural values communities attach to their environment and natural
resources can be identified and used to inspire communities to conserve their natural
resources.

Mining communities in Karamoja Sub Region are concerned that abundant minerals have not resulted in the transformation of their lives.

Karamoja residents believe that if the Minerals Bill 2019 is passed, they will be able to address issues of royalties that communities are meant to receive from their minerals.

Ecological Christian Organizationthrough its Karamoja Mining Governance project funded by DGF continues to reach out to Artisanal small miners (ASMs) amidst covid. The lockdown and associated restrictions on containing covid molded a scenario forhigh potential of human rights abuse and land grabbing which instilled constant fear and anxiety in the ASMs. In addition, many mining sites in Karamoja are near porous borders with countries that are exhibiting increasing covid cases. As a result, the project intensified support to ASMs through radio talk shows and monitoringvisits to 10 mining sites

Access to energy efficient and improved cooking solutions is one of the major global drives.
The covered design of improved cook stoves provides a low rate of heat loss thereby reducing the energy needs of households.
Improved cook stoves reduce smoke and fumes that could result into indoor air pollution and thus protects women and girls from respiratory issues. These stoves concentrate the heat to reduce fuel consumption as compared to a traditional three stone fireplace.
But all this starts with a foundation.
