In Uganda, 1 in 4 teenage girls aged 15 - 19 have had a child or are pregnant, 42% of all pregnancies among adolescents are unintended/unwanted and 10% of women aged 20-24 were married off by age 15.

According to the Uganda Demographic Health Survey, 25% of teenage girls are either pregnant or have already had their first child (UDHS 2016). Of the 28% girls who were sexually active while still at school, 80.1% got pregnant and 97% dropped out of school due to pregnancy (MoES 2016).

Let's advocate for the production of clear, progressive guidelines for health professionals on young people's positive right to access Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights information and services.

Today we celebrate the International Youth Day 2019 organized under the theme: "Transforming Education"

According to UNESCO, statistics demonstrate that significant transformations are still required to make education systems more inclusive and accessible: only 10% of people have completed upper secondary education in low income countries; 40 % of the global population is not taught in a language they speak or fully understand; and over 75 % of secondary school age refugees are out of school.

Through support from DHL Express and DHL Africa, we have made Education inclusive and accessible to the children and youth in Dokolo District through construction of Hope Christian kindergarten and Primary School with a clean drinking water 💦
We're looking forward to constructing a Secondary School so as to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Access to clean and drinking water💦 is one of the key elements that facilitates progress in rural communities. This factor alone determines the following milestones of a community;

• Sufficient access to clean water💦 will ensure fights over water control are minimized and fetching water from a dirty source will stop hence allowing the community to concentrate efforts on its own development.
• Ensuring that everyone in the community has sufficient clean drinking water to promote health.
• Children and women who spend their days on long journeys carrying water become an active part of the community’s workforce.
• Adequate sanitation prevents the spreading of easily-avoidable diseases.

DHL Africa, DHL and DHL Express officially handed over the first Solar Powered water💦 to the community of Dokolo District. This will purposely serve Hope Christian kindergarten and Primary School and the community.
Thank you for blessing our school and the community with water and for the tremendous work you're doing in improving the lives of vulnerable children.

The overall aim of the Water Project is to promote Quality Education, clean water, sanitation and hygiene to improve the lives of children, young people and development of the community.

Pupils from Hope Christian Kindergarten and Primary School pulled up an epic edutainment at the commissioning of the first Solar Powered Water in Dokolo District. We strongly believe that Music, Dance and Drama transforms children's lives and enrich a whole school community and also enhances creativity and visualization that's why it's part of the school curriculum.

Poverty is the main underlying cause of poor health in Dokolo District. High rate of illiteracy especially among women, high prevalence of preventable diseases, emergence of diseases of lifestyles, inadequate provision and distribution of health services and other social services e.g. safe water supply and sanitation facilities.

Reproductive Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of a disease or infirmity, in all matters relating to the reproductive system and to it's function and processes at all stages of life.

This implies that young people are able to have a responsible, satisfying and safer sex life. They should have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so.

Sexual Health also requires a positive and respectful approach to Sexuality, as well as the possibility of having pleasure and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For this to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.

[06/25/19]   40% of girls in Uganda are married before their 18th birthday and one in 10 is married before the age of 15. According to UNICEF, Uganda has the 16th highest prevalence rate of child marriage in the world and the tenth highest absolute number of child brides globally – 787,000.

The best strategies to end child marriages include;
1. Empowering girls with information, skills and support networks.
2. Providing economic support and incentives to girls and their families.
3. Educating and rally parents and community members.
4. Enhancing girls’ access to a high-quality education and encourage supportive laws and policies.
In order for the next generation of development programs to make ending child marriage a priority, policymakers must pay attention to these strategies while continuing to test innovative approaches and evaluation techniques.

In Uganda, 78% of young people aged 13-18 are currently attending school while 10% of the 6-12 year olds have never been in school and 22% of adolescents aged 13-18 have left school which is due to negative social practices like;
Child/forced marriages, Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The education sector in Uganda is also constrained by many challenges.
These include a high level of teacher and student absenteeism, weak school level management structures, inadequate availability of learning materials, and large class sizes. A major issue is also the availability of teachers in disadvantaged areas and a lack of accommodation for teachers in rural, hard to reach areas.

At Hope Christian foundation, we hope to zero down these challenges through construction of good/large classrooms which can accommodate all our children, employing well qualified teachers and non teaching staff, availing the reading materials and sensitising the community on the dangers of all negative social practices thru working with the Government of the Republic of Uganda and other key partners like DHL, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNFPA, DHL Express, DHL Africa, DHL Aviation, DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Motorsports

Every child has the right to a quality education, which includes access to clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services while at school. Children spend a significant portion of their day at school where WASH services can impact student learning, health, and dignity, particularly for girls.

The inclusion of WASH in schools in the Sustainable Development Goals targets SDG4 which is Quality Education and SDG6 which is Clean Water💧 and Sanitation, and this basically represents increasing recognition of their importance as key components of a ‘safe, non-violent, inclusive and effective learning environment’ and as part of ‘universal’ WASH access, which emphasizes the need for WASH outside of the home.

We want to take this opportunity to thank DHL for funding this project to make sure that our children have access to clean water💧.
