I remember the first time a friend encouraged me to volunteer with FOCUS. My mind went like....'hold up, u said they are from slums, nga I don't do slum, I can only do posh..' Yet I remember the first class I went to it was a P.5 English class (they are now S.4s). And I realised how much of a brat I was. Who was I to not give them a chance. All they needed was someone to believe in them and love them. Let's say its closing to 7 years doing just that.

I handle the youngest class and the P.7 class. What I love most about the youngest class is that most of the kids pass through my hands. I take it as a serious responsibility. Cz u see I am simply a steward, they belong to God and I have to train them in the way of the Father. I need to show them that God has levelled the ground for all of us. I have to pull them out of all strange mannerisms, self doubt and self pity. And trust me I have seen tremendous results.

Many times we pray, ' God when am rich I will make a difference' wrong that's probably why many a stuck. He asked Moses what do u have and he said a rod. Back at campus I had the time and have commuted to always have the time. There is no greater blessing to invest and give all of u into another.

Oh am persuaded our little ones are going places and so grateful have been given an opportunity to love another not of my womb.

http://focusuganda.org/ FOCUS supports children from the Mulago-Kalerwe slum community in Kampala, Uganda, East Africa. These children are supported financially through individual sponsorship so that they have the opportunity to attend school and also be provided with their basic needs.

Through various educational programs, FOCUS exposes these children to opportunities that will help them develop spiritually, physically, socially, and economically. The FOCUS: Mulago Child Development Project is committed to making a holistic impact on the slum community by using the child as the entry point in the community.

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SPONSORS

'We were attracted to the project because it was created by Ugandans for Ugandans. We liked the philology, register one child from a family, believing that the child will influence the whole family. Provide school tuition and uniforms, Saturday programs for a place to play, school help, Bible classes, life skills, nutrition, hygiene, HIV education, emotional health, games and a nutritious lunch including fruit and sometimes meat. Celebrate achievements. Annual days in camp on Lake Victoria—a great delight. Periodically they are given bars of soap.

We eagerly support the vision and service of the college students and staff and to encourage friends to sponsor a child.

SOMETIMES YOU CAN'T PAY IT BACK, SO YOU JUST PAY IT FORWARD -Randy Pausch

“I discovered that children have the desire and willingness to learn in the lockdown period and yet they lacked adults who have the time to help. I have a desire of seeing all children excel in Math. I have been an excellent Mathematics student and I would like to be
a stepping stone for others to excel in it too.” Valentine

Thank you Valentine Kabugo for paying it forward in these uncertain times

Valentine is one of the older students in the project. He is a 3rd year student at Makerere University.

THANK YOU

The 26th of May 2020 saw 289 families receiving food items. This was as a result of your giving towards COVID relief. The recipients included all child supported families and 100 community members who were finding it hard to place food on their table. Susanne one of community members shares her story.

“I thank FOCUS for thinking about us too. I am a single mother. I was abandoned by my husband two years ago. I wash clothes for people for a living but due to the lockdown business, ‘customers’ are home washing for themselves. My children collect scrap metal which they sell and fetch water for people for us to survive. A village Health Team Worker invited me to FOCUS and I did not know what to expect. I am so thankful. Our last bar of soap was given to us by a neighbor. I have received 5Kgs of maize flour, 3kgs of beans, 3 kgs of rice, I liter of cooking oil and a 1kg bar of soap!”

Thank you to all our wonderful sponsors for still sharing what you have during this uncertain season

Three months ago one of the families supported by the program came to ask for a meal but walked away with a means to provide food on the table with only $43.
With this money, the family started selling Sweets and Biscuits. Every day they make a profit of $1.5. To them these means a lot in their life's. #Restoring_Hope.

#HERE_IS_TEDDY'S #STORY
In my 45 years of life, I had never seen any wild animal or come close to a lake. This was my very first time. It was so exciting visiting the zoo! The chimpanzees impressed me a lot. They are like humans. The warden explained to us how they choose their new community leader after the death of Zakayo (The ‘Chief’ and oldest chimpanzee in the country that died at the age of 54 in 2017). Zakayo, towards his death, sat the entire community to show them his heir. It was not long after that and he died. However, the community opposed the successor because he was greedy. The chimpanzees went into a three day uproar until the successor surrendered power! When I saw the floating restaurant where we had our lunch, I prayed constantly for its pillars not to crush in the waters with us! I surely had a wonderful time.

We provide opportunities for children to attend school and get formal Education. One of our children shared;
“For a time I dropped out of school and that was the worst time for me. I would see the many children in the community not in school and would tell myself I was not going to be one of them. I prayed to God every moment I had and one day had a chance to get back in school. I work hard and do not waste time and I want to be better than what my growing years have been.”

Opportunities to learn how to use Computers are provided at the center. One of our students said, “I want to thank you for the computer lessons you have provided me. I know this skill is going to be helpful to me in secondary, university and wherever I will go. I have found everything about the lessons interesting especially creating email addresses and so on. But the most interesting thing was connecting to the internet. I searched for many things like qualities of a good friend. The computer made me realize what type of friends I have. I learnt that good friends are always caring, considerate, generous and good listeners. They always fight for you, respect you and always encourage you. It seems none of my friends are these things.”
