Called to be peacemakers (18/10/2020) Hebrews 12:14 "Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord." - NIV We live in a world of chaos, confusion, uncertainties, terror and all sorts of evil. We can't even be sure whom to trust or what will happen next. Most people's motives and intentions are unclear and suspect making it difficult to meaningfully relate with them. Greed, selfishness and sheer evil drive many actions people undertake. Some thrive on creating confusion. It's in such a world that we are not only called to live in holiness, but peacemakers as well. God is a God of peace. Jesus' other title is Prince of peace. He wants everyone everywhere to live in peace. He calls us to be His channels of peace making. By so doing, we will be identified with God as His sons. Sons of God are peacemakers. Satan and his agents are the reason for the confusion and evil in the world. But Jesus defeated him and empowered us to live in that victory. Peace can be elusive, especially when people want to have their way and don't care about others. Thats why the scripture above says 'Make every effort...' We need to do all we can, within our God given abilities, God being our helper, as much as is possible, to bring peace wherever we live or work with ALL men, regardless of their status. We can do so without compromising our values or courting evil. True lasting peace that God gives promotes biblical principles of righteousness, human dignity, positive progress and development in all aspects of life. Be a peacemaker wherever you are. Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Romans 12:18 "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Shalom children of God. Peaceful Sunday
Holiness is still God's standard! (17/10/2020) Hebrews 12:14 "Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:" - KJV The author was discussing discipline towards holiness. We live in a time Jesus prophesied about, that sin will increase and the love of many in God will grow cold (Matt 24:12). Paul talked about the same, describing how all manner of sin will manifest (2 Tim 3:1-5). It's sadly amazing how sin has been trivialised, and is now part and parcel of everyday life, including in the church, the custodian of God's truth! Some have compromised with evil and think God too has adjusted His standard. God has not, and will never adjust His standard of holiness. He is holy and calls us to holiness and peaceful living. We were created in the likeness of God. That means we are to reflect God's nature. One of His key attributes is holiness. The scripture above declares that without holiness, no man shall see the Lord. A requirement to entering and living in God's kingdom is holiness. Jesus is coming back soon for a holy church, without spot or wrinkle of sin (Eph 5:27). Holiness for God's children should manifest in thoughts, talk, actions, relationships with others, in secret and in public as we conduct the affairs of everyday life. We can't flow with the tide of evil in our world today and expect God to endorse it. He gives the strength and ability to live in holiness IF we corporate with the Holy Spirit. Living in holiness becomes impossible when we try to do it by human abilities. Amidst all the evil, it's still possible to live in holiness. Lot did it in the terribly wicked Sodom and Gomorrah (2 Peter 3:7). We too can. If we stumble with sin, let's always return to God in repentance. 1 Peter 1:14-16 "As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." Shalom

[11/15/20]   A life of one thing!

By Pastor Dr. Aggrey Soyekwo

Philippians 3:13-14 "Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." - NIV

Paul narrates how his past life had been; the things he considered precious and valuable until he encountered Christ. Then everything changed. His view of life, goals and focus were realigned. Whatever was valuable before became like rubbish. He sought only after one thing; to know Him and the power of His resurrection. He now lived his life for only that one thing.

This life offers so much, but we are not meant to do everything. We get so preoccupied with many things and scatter our time and energies on them. Martha did so while hosting Jesus in their home until Jesus observed that she got weary and troubled by many things she was doing (Luke 10:38-42). A life of one thing is focused. It aligns everything else we do to the one goal; glorifying God. It pushes aside every distractions and says NO to whatever is not in line with its purpose. Such a life has found the treasure of his heart, the pearl of great value that cannot be exchanged for anything else.

One reason for the ineffectiveness of many lives is the lack of focus. When any wind of new ideas, deals, doctrines, etc keeps swaying you in all directions, there will be no meaningful progress. The person who has clarified and established the one thing they live for will avoid wasting their time and effort chasing after what they were never meant to do. David lived for only God, and his kingship became unmatched. Our lives are so precious to be spent on what we were never meant to do!

Psalms 27:4 "One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple."

Not enduring sound doctrine (30/9/2020)

2 Timothy 4:2-4 "Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." - NIV

Paul, an old man and prisoner for the gospel, is soon leaving. These words are among his last to his son Timothy. He charged him to preach the WORD in all seasons, using it to correct, rebuke and encourage. He prophetically sees a time in which men will not endure sound doctrine of the word, but will gather for themselves teachers who will tell them what their itching ears want to hear and not what they need to hear. Such is the way out of the truth into error. All such actions are driven by their own desires, no longer seeking the will of God even if they use His name.

How true this is in our day! To many professing God's name, the issue is no longer about what the truth of God's word is, but what they can get out of it to suit their desires. The gathering of teachers follows what they want to hear. And the teachers also know what their listeners want to hear, and will give it to their gain. This has led to gross misappropriation of God's word to portray what it was never meant to mean. Unfortunately, Scripture is used to justify anything ill intentioned false gospel ministers want to give their eager listeners!

The purpose of sound doctrine is to keep us on track in God, transforming us into Christ's image. It will rebuke and correct, directing us to the narrow, sometimes long path of God's will. This will antagonize our pleasure seeking and easy life of the flesh. And Satan can't fail to give those shortcuts to easy life. Its is incumbent upon each one who truly wants to live God's way, to rightly preach and live by the word, sharp as it can be. Therein is our safety in these perilous times.

Matthew 7:13-14 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

Shalom children of God.

[09/26/20]   He must increase and I decrease (26/9/2020)

John 3:30 "He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less." - NLT

John's disciples, concerned that their fame was fading, came to tell him about Jesus Who was now baptizing people on the other side of Jordan river and that all people were going to Him. John needed to act fast to keep his popularity. But John allayed their fears by confirming that Jesus the Messiah had to take centre stage. His work was to introduce Him to the world. Now that He was here, he was okay to phase out.

These are common scenarios in life and ministry as someone else rises up and becomes more popular and people seem to abandon you for them. Feeling threatened, those who want to retain their place of fame and 'followers' fight the rising ones, alleging all sorts of things. How unfortunate! John's response is a perfect lesson for us. He told his disciples not to worry. His attitude was, 'If anyone receives a call from above, who am I to fight it.' He was ready to become less and less until he disappeared from the scene, allowing Jesus whom he introduced to the world, became greater and greater instead of fighting in competition.

We are mot competing in this work, unless your motive in ministry is something else other than truly serving God. Serve your purpose in your time and move on as others take over. Jesus allowed His disciples to do what He did, and much more (John 14:12) as He physsically phased out. And He rejoiced as He gladly handed over the mantle. I pray each one of us allows Jesus become greater until we disappear and only Him is seen in us! And all the glory goes to Him. Learn from Paul.

Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
