As the pandemic continues and the lockdown lengthens, Anawim’s visitors also lessen. And this means fewer donations too.

When we studied the daily operational expenses of Anawim, we found out that we spend most on food, medical expenses, and yes, adult diapers.

Will you help us raise funds or raise actual diapers for the daily needs of the elderly?

Right now, we are serving 65 elders. And the average expense for adult diapers is Php 128,700 monthly. That means that we are spending Php 1,980.00 per elder per month.

Small amounts gathered together will surely make a big difference to the operations of Anawim Lay Missions.

To donate, kindly go to https://bit.ly/FMMDiaperDriveCampaign or to donate actual diapers, please message us for details.

Frontline or Behind the Scenes

“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
– Joshua 24:15

Our family comes together every night to recite the Psalms and intercede for people who ask for prayers and those whom we feel need them. If one member is out of town, we still pray together through video calls.

This is how we serve the Lord. We intercede for people. We rejoice together when those whom we pray for receive the answer to their prayer, and we pray more fervently for those whose prayers were not answered.

You need not serve the Lord in the frontlines, like leading worship or singing in the choir. In your own small way, you can serve the Lord. You may do so by preparing the presentation slides of songs for the Mass or prayer meeting, or dusting the pews in your parish church.

You may be serving God behind the scenes, but the Lord is pleased to see the desire in your heart to serve Him. Rissa Espinosa ([email protected])

reflect

“One of the greatest rewards that we ever receive for serving God is the permission to do still more for Him.” (Charles Spurgeon)

Lord, thank You for calling me to serve You. May I be able to serve You with my whole heart, mind, and soul. Amen.

Are you Ready?

‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how is it that you are here without wedding clothes?’ But the man had no reply.
– Matthew 22:12

I am the eldest of two siblings. My brother is five years younger than me. As in any Filipino family, being the eldest has its unspoken responsibilities. I am expected to be the more responsible one. Because of this, I am always on my toes whenever there are family concerns, such as money and our family properties.

Today’s Gospel reminds us about preparation and being on our toes. When the king noticed a man not wearing the proper wedding clothes to the celebration, he found this disrespectful since he came unprepared for the occasion.

This made me reflect on how important it is for us to always be on our toes not only for the physical things, but most importantly, the things that are eternal.

We waste so much of our time on the things of the world—money, power, properties. We often forget that what truly matters is readying ourselves for the time we finally see God face to face. How prepared are we for that occasion?

Let’s prepare by repenting of our sins and follow Jesus’ example. Erika Ventura ([email protected])

reflect

Are you prepared to meet God today?

Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Purify my desires as I prepare to meet You someday. Amen.

The Generous End of the Stick

“Am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?”
– Matthew 20:15

An anonymous man gave away money to people who shopped in Walmart in Alabama. The man paid a total of US$65,000 layaway balance. He left a note saying, “God loves you. Jesus paid the price.” We applaud stories like these, and we do our own bit at being generous, too.

But there are forms of generosity that try us. When you are in a hurry and the driver in front of you seems to be taking his or her sweet time, will you give way? You have worked hard at your company, then find yourself bypassed for promotion.

When it seems unfair, will you be happy for the person who got the generous end of the stick? Many of us feel we are actually the elder son rather than the prodigal son. Because we feel we deserve generosity while the others not as much. And there’s the rub.

We measure things with our own eyes. We often forget that God knows everything and His wisdom is unlike ours. There is still so much more to learn about being generous. Joyce Roa ([email protected])

reflect

Do you sometimes feel that you have been treated unfairly? That the world is unfair? That God is unfair?

Lord, I easily delude myself into thinking I’m more on the right than others. Forgive me, Lord. Continue to mold my heart and make it more like Yours.

THE FIRST GOAT

“But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.”
– Matthew 19:30

Michael Phelps is the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) not just in swimming but in all sports! He garnered 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold. He was the first of all firsts. He was winning them all, but he was losing it on the inside.

For him, the excitement of winning was just a flash. The sheer thought of giving more than what he has already given to the sport terrified him. The fear of losing the title “champion,” the only identity that has defined his personhood, had sucked out all joy from his spirit. With an identity too tiring to keep and a purpose eroding thin, he tweeted, “I struggled with anxiety and depression, and questioned whether or not I wanted to be alive anymore.”

Friend, the key to winning your life back is to admit you are losing it. Michael became the first (again!) champion to admit he needed help. He shared, “As an athlete, we’re supposed to be these big macho people that don’t have any problems and we’re not supposed to show weakness, but that’s so wrong. I’m so thankful I can ask for help. This saved my life.”

Friend, reach out to someone for help now. Jon Escoto ([email protected])

reflect

Don’t keep your struggles to yourself. It’s time to get help.

Father, I thought I could pull through this alone. But right now, I’m so broken. Give me the honesty and courage to seek help and send me the right person.
