THE NEED FOR CLEANSING AND HEALING
By Bro. Makilito B. Mahinay
In the Gospel of the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Mk. 1:40-45), a man suffering from a dreaded skin-disease came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees saying, “If you are willing, you can cleanse me. In answer Jesus said “'I am willing. Be cleansed.”. And at once, the man was healed and cleansed.
MAN AS BOTH BODY AND SOUL. Everybody has, and is suffering from a kind of disease. As we are composed of body and soul, the disease could be of both, whose ultimate aim is to paralyze and kill. To avoid paralysis or death, either of our body or soul, we need to cleanse ourselves of the disease. But there are fundamental barriers to cleansing and healing. Foremost our denial and unbelief of being infected especially if the malady is invisible. When the body is infected, the disease could be either visible or invisible. When it is visible, it becomes easy to address. But when it is invisible like the present cause of the pandemic (Covid-19), denial is common. And denial could be fatal and disastrous, because only those who admit being infected can be administered with the cure. The sick man in the gospel only got healed and cleansed by Jesus after he conceded without fear of being sick and trusting in Him as the ultimate Healer. When we do not admit being infected, we are not only in danger of our physical death but we also spread the disease. But death is the equalizer of all, whether we live 80, 90 to 100 years, with or without pandemic. For death in the language of God, is a multiplier of life, as Jesus declares, “Truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains by itself. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.” (Jn. 12;24).
THE MORE IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF MAN. Mysteriously Jesus is directing us to the more important component of our being, our SOUL. The suffering of the body and ultimately its death caused by the infectious diseases do not actually matter before God, as Jesus Himself said, ‘“For what profits a man if he gains the whole world but loses his own soul”. (Mt. 16:26). Jesus, as the Author of Life, reveals that our soul is worth more than the value of the whole world (with all the vast wealth, power, fame and honor it offers). This truth makes the cleansing of the soul infinitely important more than anything.

INTIMACY OF HUMANITY WITH GOD. In the not too distant past, before the First and the Second World War, there was that period of humanity’s intimate bonding with God. They were not free of sufferings. But they were rich in spirituality. Holiness abound evident in the lives they dedicated in prayers and living the gospel. Their footprints are spread throughout the world, in the lives of missionaries who became Martyrs and Saints as they offer their lives for the spread and the defense of the gospel. They built beautiful Cathedral of Churches (Gothic and Baroque designs) mostly in the Western and Eastern Europe, which would make us wonder and believe in awe that only the divinely inspired minds and hands in collaboration with a host of Angels could make. These beautiful structures are still there but are empty of worshippers as they long became catacombs and museums that keep record of that holy episode in the journey of the Church.

THE PANDEMIC OF GODLESSNESS. Unknown to many, the present generation is slowly infected with the deadly pandemic of godlessness, brought by materialism, relativism and other worldly ideologies widely welcomed or tolerated. This is the invisible but yet noticeable endemic disease which even pe*****te the sanctuary of God, the Church, made manifest in the declining number of those who choose to live a holy or religious life. The Laity (which is the biggest component of the Church as God’s Family on Earth) are presently confused of the varied signals coming from their Shepherds (the Bishops) e.g., on issues about sanctity of MARRIAGE, FAMILY and LIFE. In many instances, they do not speak any more with one voice. This is the spiritual pandemic prevalent long before the Covid-19 pandemic.

THE PRONOUNCEMENT OF MORAL ACCEPTABILITY. Correct this information if its wrong, “The VATICAN says that it is "MORALLY ACCEPTABLE” to receive a vaccination for COVID-19, even if the vaccine's ### PRODUCTION involved USING cell lines derived from ABORTED FETUSES, given the "grave danger" of the pandemic.” Forgive the skepticism of this humble Sharer about this pronouncement of moral acceptability. For him, it is no different in saying, “Its okay to eat human flesh from dead bodies, after all they are already dead, what is important, it can help the living.” Personally, the error is readily visible. First, not all manufacturers admit using cells of aborted fetus in their “PRODUCTION” of vaccines against Covid 19. (Let me underscore. The personal objection is about the “PRODUCTION” using the cells of aborted fetus. The objection is not about the “CLINICAL STUDIES” relating to the production using the already existing and collected aborted fetus in the past. There is a whale of different between the two). And there is evidence that there are many vaccine manufacturers who DO NOT USE “cell lines derived from aborted fetuses”. When given enough time, by the grace of God, Science can produce a perfect vaccine without traces of abortion. In the words of St. Therese de Avila, “Patience obtains all things.” Meaning, humanity is not deprive of option.

THE PRAYERFUL WISH OF THE LAITY. It is the wish and prayer of the Laity, including this ordinary mortal, late as it may seem, that the Church’s Hierarchy kept silent on the issue of moral acceptability on vaccines manufactured using “cell lines derived from aborted fetuses”. Their silence would have simply led the people to reflect and discern on the Sixth Commandment “THOU SHALL NOT KILL”, and its accompanying dos and don’ts (including abortion and sins of promiscuity). Bearing in mind the enormity of the demand for the vaccines throughout the world because of the fear created in us by the pandemic, the now widely publicized stand of “MORAL ACCEPTABILITY” of the Church’s Hierarchy, will be invoked by all vaccine manufacturers as encouragement and added justification of the use of the cells of aborted fetuses. Then, a FLOODGATES OF INDUSTRIAL ABORTION or mass MURDER OF THE HELPLESS INNOCENTS in the wombs will be thrown wide open with its accompanying and continuing catastrophic destruction of astronomic proportion, of over millions if not billions of souls until Christ’s return. Abortion is a MORTAL SIN, and no amount of justification from anyone can change its collective lethal and catastrophic effect on every soul who will listen to the voice of their Shepherds. This will remind us of the original sin of our first parents, induced by the Serpent who told Eve that it is alright for her to eat the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge, because she will not die as told by God (Gen. 3:4-5). We all know the deadly effect of that reckless choice made by our first parents in listening to the cryptic advise of the Devil.

THE UNSEEN TEST OF FAITH. “The GRAVE DANGER”, as seen by the Hierarchy of the Church, IN NOT ACCEPTING the vaccines even when laced with cells from aborted fetus, CAN NOT BE GREATER THAN THE LOSS OF THE COUNTLESS SOULS, who, inspired by the said pronouncement of “MORAL ACCEPTABILITY” will embrace abortion as a matter of necessity to survive every time there is pandemic. There can be no doubt that the present pandemic has brought many prodigal children back to God. We all see the limits if not the helplessness of Science prompting everyone to find succor in the Divine. The enormous spiritual graces and blessings brought and still continue to pour upon the earth, invisible as they are, is a victory of the entire Church. In the words of Jesus, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning.” (Lk 10:18). But all this will come to naught by the sheer repetition of the original error, innocent as it may seem. When there is an option, why gamble the loss of many souls for the sake of simple appeasement of mere fear of physical death? In embracing the abortion for convenience sake (as the need of the time in order for others to live), we literally make faith irrelevant in our spiritual life, and make true what Jesus said, “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on earth?” (Lk. 18:8).

THE WHOLE CHURCH NEEDS HEALING AND CLEANSING. The Laity, as the largest component of the Church, need to pray and discern on the message of God during this present pandemic. The Hierarchy of the Church also need to listen with humility the wisdom coming from the lowest but the greatest number of souls comprising the Church. In grace or disgrace, as children of God, in Jesus through Mary, we are inseparably intertwined with each other (Laity and the Church’s Hierarchy alike). The message is not new as it is the same old message given by Jesus in His popular story of the Prodigal Son (Lk. 15:11-32). We are all God’s prodigal children being called to go back to the home of the Father all tired, hungry, wounded and confused. There is no other way back home but Jesus, “The Way, the Truth and the Life” (Jn. 14:6). Outside of our collective home, the Church, there is famine, disease, lostness and darkness. At home, there is security and peace. Sometimes this humble Sharer wonders of what the Venerable Bishop Fulton Sheen said: “Who’s going to save our Church? It’s not our bishops, it’s not our priests and it is not the religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that the priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops, and the religious act like religious.” WISHING YOU ALL A CONTINUING PRAYERFUL AND CLEANSING DAYS AHEAD!
THE RELEVANCE OF PRAYER
By: Bro. Makilito B. Mahinay

In the Gospel of the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Mk. 1:29-39), Jesus is shown being very pre-occupied even during the night consisting of preaching of the Good News of salvation, then healing and driving out of demons from those who were possessed, to the point that “all the city was gathered at the door of the house of Simon and Andrew” where He stayed together with James and John. But despite Jesus’ hectic activities, he rose early in the morning and “going out he went to a desert place and there he PRAYED”, and thereafter, He together with His four disciples (Simon, Andrew, James and John), proceeded to the neighboring town and cities to preach, to heal and cast out demons.

Both in His human and divine nature Jesus recognizes the importance of being always in communion with the Heavenly Father through prayer. Indeed, in our spiritual journey, prayer is the only measure and provision we need to reach pinnacle of God’s mountain. It is the nexus between heaven and the pilgrims journeying towards it.

The fullness of prayer can only be attained when we truly understand and acknowledge our own littleness and nothingness before God. Self-reliance and self-confidence in the discipline and control of our own lives are only barriers in arriving at the grace of an authentic prayer life. For prayer is about humility and complete abandonment to Him who is the source and giver of life, a life in all its abundance (Jn. 10:10). Consciousness of our own poverty and wretchedness before God, will bring us to the knowledge that nothing is wasted in prayer.

By donning upon ourselves the habit of prayer, we start dwelling in the constant presence of God and foretaste heaven. And once heaven is tasted, all become less important. Heaven or nothing! But our corrupt nature and tendencies make us unworthy to enter into the loving companionship with God. God’s presence or even a glimpse of His trails becomes elusive. Instead of bringing us closer to what is divine, we feel heaven is being shunned. Then prayer becomes a monotonous and frustrating endeavor to reach out to heaven. The absence of an authentic encounter with God in our prayers inflicts a wound in our souls. Slowly it robs its relevance to our lives.

In today’s gospel, despite His busy schedules Jesus finds time to remove Himself from the limelight and alone in a “desert place” prays to the Heavenly Father. And Jesus has given us a beautiful prayer intended for all generations, the LORD’S PRAYER. And truly the wisdom wrapped in it are divine revealing of God, the very Author. Its riches and mysteries are inexhaustible as all other prayers in the world, whether in the past, at present or in the future, are embraced and contained in it. It is a prayer for all times. And by the inspiration and guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can acquire the full knowledge of the truths revealed in the Lord’s Prayer, whose amplitude and pertinence transcend and encompass every generation and the boundaries of space and time.

The Lord’s Prayer when contemplated deeply is a sure key to gain entrance into the abiding presence of the Lord, since it is a prayer where Jesus Himself is the lead Pray-er.

In our baptism we receive the same Holy Spirit that inspired Peter to proclaim Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. (Mt. 16;16). So that the grace of faith and wisdom that Peter received direct from the Heavenly Father is also ours to claim. But this sacred truth, oftentimes, is obscured by our daily encounter of the mundane travails affecting our prayer life. If we only follow the example of Jesus in the gospel and care to take a leave even for a few minutes from our daily concerns to seek for Him through prayer, regardless of our life’s calling, we will discover that He awaits us from the depths and inner silence of our hearts, to be in authentic solidarity with Him. And in that moment of oneness, we will be accorded access and a glimpse of eternity as Jesus Himself will repeat in us the same promise He made to Peter “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven.” (Mt. 16:19)

If only all of humanity realize the relevance of prayer, the whole world would not be under the grip of fear in this time of crisis. Today fear of the uncertainties is our foremost enemy. And our faith is tested to the limits. Let us hold on to our prayers. Whenever we pray we create an altar of God within ourselves. And when God is in us, FEAR vanishes.

A very popular saint of our contemporary times, St. Therese de Avila has this beautiful prayer which finds relevance in our time: “LET NOTHING DISTURB YOU; LET NOTHING FRIGHTEN YOU; ALL THINGS ARE PASSING; GOD NEVER CHANGES; PATIENCE OBTAINS ALL THINGS; WHOEVER HAS GOD LACKS NOTHING; GOD IS ENOUGH”.

A PRAYERFUL WEEKEND TO ALL.

THE TEMPLATE OF CONTRIBUTIVE ALLIANCE
By: Bro. Makilito B. Mahinay

THE GOSPEL. Our gospel in today’s Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Mk. 6:7-13), is about Jesus’ conferment of POWER to His twelve Apostles over “UNCLEAN SPIRITS” or “DEMONS” and the sending of them in PAIRS to villages to PREACH REPENTANCE, DRIVE OUT DEMONS, ANOINT THE SICK with oil, and in that sequence of order, provide HEALING to the sick. “He instructed them to take nothing for the journey but a walking stick— no food, no sack, no money in their belts. They were, however, to wear sandals but not a second tunic” and said, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave. Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.”

THE ALLIANCE. There is a template set by God in the economy of humanity’s salvation, and that is, CONTRIBUTORY ALLIANCE. Contributive, because the alliance is by God’s permissive will. In that pattern, God as the only source of salvation reveals His inscrutable kindness, and His true nature as the ONE GOD, yet a collaboration of three Divine Persons, the Blessed Trinity. That alliance is founded on free will revealing LOVE as the true essence of the union. In today’s Gospel Jesus saw humanity’s brokenness in various circumstances. And it is traced to our INHERITED rejection of God via our first parents (personified in Adam and Eve) who unwittingly made friendship with the Devil, through disobedience of God’s inflexible command “thou shall not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” (Gen. 2:17). That disobedience of God and brief friendship with the Devil became the permanent portal of sin to all of humanity bringing death unto them. Where sins abound, so is affliction and death.

REALITY OF UNCLEAN SPIRITS. In today’s gospel, Jesus reveals the reality of demons, our perennial enemies as children of God. They cause various illnesses which may culminate in death. In truth, independent of today’s gospel, are several verses in the bible showing that demons are real. Foremost to win in the fight against the enemies (the demons) is to believe that they exist. Denial won’t help but instead firm up their hold and worsen the affliction in us. As it is in the past (during the time of our first parents), it is so in our times. A compromise with the devil, whether deliberate or unintended creates a territory of him in us. And to know further that the battle ground is within us, is dreadful. The enemy being within us and a demon at that masquerading in many ways, we need to concede that on our own, we are HELPLESS in the battle. Humility summons God’s compassion and mercy.
THE AUTHOR OF EVERY HEALING. And who can defeat and extricate the demon, and reclaim the territory in our lives we have surrendered, personified in our various addictions? And who truly cares and can provide victory, authentic healing and restoration of the purity of life in us but only God and no other? And what God has, i.e., power, wisdom, etc., He can always will to share, give or delegate. And that exactly, is what the covenant of salvation of humanity is all about, where the OFFSPRING of the WOMAN was prophesied long time ago to bring VICTORY for humanity against death by CRUSHING the head of the Serpent (the father of lies and all evil spirits [the demons]) (Gen. 3:15). But before the conception of the Offspring, there was first that courting of alliance by God through Angel Gabriel with the Woman, whereby through her an Offspring will be borne who will be called “SON OF THE MOST HIGH” whose kingdom will have no end. (Lk. 1:26-38). We wonder why would God condescended to our own kind in the Annunciation. That can only come from an authentic lover. The woman’s investment in that alliance, is nothing more than her humble “YES” to the proposition, as she said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk. 1:38). That “YES”, turns out to be our own “YES”, throwing the floodgates of heaven open for all humanity regardless of time or generation.
THE PERMITTED CONTRIBUTIVE ALLIANCE. Without the mother (the WOMAN), there can be no child (the OFFSPRING). That is the law of nature. Being so, it becomes apparent that the ultimate mission to defeat the Devil is a decreed PERMITTED ALLIANCE of both, the WOMAN and her OFFSPRING. Thus, God said to the Serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the WOMAN , and between your offspring and hers; He will crush your head and you will strike his heel.” The battle had long been declared and engaged. Indeed, Jesus, the OFFSPRING of Mary (the Word who became flesh, yet TRUE GOD and TRUE MAN), is the ultimate proof of that alliance and covenant of salvation (between Heaven and Earth [God and Humanity in Mary, respectively]), but bearing in mind that this happened because God permitted it to be so. On that note, let us not mistake this apparent permitted contributive alliance as putting the WOMAN in Mary in equality with the OFFSPRING, the SON OF GOD, in Jesus. Salvation only comes through Jesus (Ephesians 2:89). The underscored alliance must be viewed only in the context of God’s OVERFLOWING love, mercy, generosity and grace for everyone.
THE CONFERMENT OF AUTHORITY. True to His role as the ultimate CRUSHER of the head of the Serpent in the covenant of salvation, and still, in pursuance of the same template of contributive alliance, Jesus, in the gospel conferred His AUTHORITY upon His twelve apostles. In pairs, He gave them the power to heal and the power to drive demons or unclean spirits. And as willed by Jesus, “The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.”
Of the twelve apostles, with Peter as their apparent anointed leader, Jesus founded His community of believers, called the CHURCH. It has its own visible structure, established by Jesus Himself upon His twelve apostles and meant to be perpetuated upon their apostolic successors since then up to the present, true to His words, “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it”. (Mt. 16:17-19).
THE OTHER SHARED MISSION. Let it be known that distinct from the authority given by Jesus to His apostles in the present Gospel, Jesus prior to His ascension to Heaven, gave Peter and the rest of the apostles the specific power and authority to carry out His MISSION to FORGIVE saying, “Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven (Mt. 16;19; 18:18), “Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven, whose sins you retain, they are retained.” (Jn. 20:23). Not only that, Jesus commanded, “Make disciples of all nations (Mt. 28:19), and to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mk. 16:15). So much so that the mission as earlier decreed by God in His covenant of salvation with Humanity, through Mary, becomes our shared mission in our respective families, and ultimately in our Church of which we are its constitutive components.
INTEGRALS OF THE CHURCH. As the eyes, ears, hands and feet of the Church through our baptism, we are all its ambassadors in Jesus. Like the twelve apostles in the gospel, we too are also being BLESSED to GIVE. We are commissioned to preach repentance and to do different acts of charity, no matter how little, but founded only in love. And with the proper orientation, training and supervision of the certified experts of the Church, we too can drive out demons, anoint and cure the sick. This mission, more than ever is relevant in this time of the pandemic. As the needy are so vast, so is the love, mercy and compassion of God. In the pursuit thereof, the gospel is INSTRUCTIVE, “No food, no sack, no money”. We are mandated to rely simply in the providence of God. EXPECT REJECTION and with no desire for “THUMBS UP” or “LIKES”. The latter is the o***m of the present generation of mutual admiration. For God’s love is founded on free will, not on compulsion, neither on feeling or emotion. As we embark on the delegated mission, we should be conscious of our own vulnerabilities. We too had made alliance with the enemies in the past. Thanks to the sacrament of reconciliation which assures us of our constant connectedness to God. We only become beneficiaries of God’s anointment, healing and forgiveness because, by His grace, and in answer to our prayer, “THY KINGODOM COME”, we have welcomed Jesus in union with the Father and the Holy Spirit, to have a full reign or dwelling in our hearts. Night and day, moment by moment, let us guard that friendship we have with the Blessed Trinity.
WISHING A HAPPY AND BLESSED SUNDAY TO ALL!
