OCTOBER 11, 2021 | OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OF ST. JOHN XXIII, POPE

A Blessed Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

We celebrate today the memorial of St. John XXIII, pope. He is best remembered for his efforts of the Second Vatican Council (1962). Despite all the honors and titles that he has received, he always clung unto humility and always maintained a bright sense of humor.

“Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residential bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, Cardinal Roncalli was elected pope, taking the name John after his father and the two patrons of Rome’s cathedral, St. John Lateran. Pope John took his work very seriously but not himself. His wit soon became proverbial, and he began meeting with political and religious leaders from around the world. In 1962, he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban missile crisis. His most famous encyclicals were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXIII enlarged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more international. At his address at the opening of the Second Vatican Council, he criticized the “prophets of doom” who “in these modern times see nothing but prevarication and ruin.” Pope John XXIII set a tone for the Council when he said, “The Church has always opposed… errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity.”

On his deathbed, Pope John said: “It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better. Those who have lived as long as I have…were enabled to compare different cultures and traditions, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the times, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead.”

“Good Pope John” died on June 3, 1963. St. John Paul II beatified him in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014.” – taken from https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/saint-john-xxiii

His memorial takes on a more special significance as he is the titular patron saint of the minor seminary, St. John XXIII Minor Seminary. May his shining example inspire more vocations and strengthen ours in the process.

St. John XXIII, pray for us!

OCTOBER 05, 2021 | OPTIONAL MEMORIAL OF SAINT MARIA FAUSTINA KOWALSKA

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Today is the Memorial of St. Faustina Kowalska, Religious and Virigin. Every 3 ’o clock of the Afternoon is always a moment to pray for Catholics. The 3 ‘o clock prayer is a prayer to the Divine Mercy. This devotion was propagated by a Polish nun, whose memory we celebrate today.

“Sister Faustina was born on August 25, 1905 in Glogowiec, Poland of a poor and religious family of peasants, the third of 10 children. She was baptized with the name Helena in the parish church of Swinice Warckie. From a very tender age she stood out because of her love of prayer, work, obedience, and also her sensitivity to the poor. At the age of seven she had already felt the first stirrings of a religious vocation. Helen made her first Holy Communion at the age of nine, which was very profound moment in her awareness of the presence of the Divine Guest within her soul. She attended school for only three semesters. After finishing school, she wanted to enter the convent, but her parents would not give her permission. Being of age at 16, Helen left home and went to work as a housekeeper in Aleksandrów, Lodi, and Ostrówek in order to find the means of supporting herself and of helping her parents.” – taken from the Apostle of Divine Mercy, a biography published by the Vatican

The devotion to the Divine Mercy of Jesus invites us to trust in the Lord in all our worries. Let us call out prayerfully before the Lord, “Jesus, I trust in You!”.

The memorial of St. Faustina Kowalska takes a greater significance in the seminary as the 4th year class, the Class of Faustini, is named after her.

OCTOBER 04, 2021 | OBLIGATORY MEMORIAL OF SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI, DEACON

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

We celebrate today the Memorial of St. Francis of Assisi, deacon and founder of the Order of Friars Minor or the “Franciscans”. However, this memorial takes on greater significance as one of the houses of San Carlos Seminary College is named after him, the House of Francis.

We know him well by the radical change of life he had when he decided to give up the lavish life he originally had. He originally came from a well-off family, as they were in the textile business. Yet, he still pursued to follow Christ as he meditated in front of the cross of San Damiano, with a voice telling him “Francis, rebuild my Church.”

Our current pope was inspired by his example as he decided to take the name “Francis” as a reminder for him to always remember the poor. Consequentially, as Catholics, the call to follow Christ remains as urgent and important to us as it was to St. Francis.

Today would be a good chance for us to do a good deed anonymously, or to do a charitable act anonymously. Let us look on St. Francis’ example when we wane in humility or poverty at times.

PRAYER FOR PEACE OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

OCTOBER 2, 2021 | OBLIGATORY MEMORIAL OF GUARDIAN ANGELS

Good Day Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Guardian angels watching over each one of us is a development and progress of meditating on the truths of our faith. Jesus mentions in the gospels that each one of the “little ones” have an angel watching over them (Mt. 18:10).

The concept of guardian angels seems like a childish concept to the typical adult Catholic. This is wrong. Each one of us should take care and constantly ask the protection and intercession of our guardian angels. They are our companions and friends in this journey to our heavenly home.

PRAYER TO MY GUARDIAN ANGEL
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here,
ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide.
Amen.

Our Holy Guardian Angels, pray for us!

OCTOBER | MONTH OF THE HOLY
ROSARY

“There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary.” – Sr. Lucia Santos, OCD, Visionary of the Fatima Apparition in 1917

October marks one of the most dearly beloved times of the year for Catholics. It is the month of the Holy Rosary, in which we also celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary on October 7.

The Holy Rosary has had a long history in the Church. It has been recommended by popes and saints alike. While the structure of this prayer is quite simple, it bears much spiritual fruit for those who pray it devoutly. It is a Marian prayer centered around the joyful, sorrowful, glorious, and luminous moments of Jesus’ and Mary’s life. It is then not a surprise that the recitation of the Holy Rosary is a part of the seminary horarium, since as aspirants to the priesthood, we desperately need the guidance and intercession of the Blessed Mother.

OUR BRIEF HISTORY

The San Carlos Seminary College began operating separately from the Seminario Mayor de San Carlos in the school year 1971-72 with a separate faculty and only with first and second-year students as enrollees. Its first Rector, Msgr. Alfeo Manalili, worked to expand the curriculum, and gained approval from the Ministry of Education (currently Commission on Higher Education) for the Seminary to grant an AB degree with double major – Philosophy and English. The College operated with an average of 120 students, producing its first batch of graduates in March 1975.

College seminarians from Cebu, Samar, Leyte, and Negros Oriental formed the bulk of the population, with a handful of students from Mindanao and Basilan.

Msgr. Felino Caballa, the second Rector who assumed his post in June 1975, called upon friends and benefactors to help with the construction of a chapel in a separate building, open to the public on Sundays and Holy Days, in keeping with the neighborhood pastoral work of seminarians.

In 1989, Msgr. Oscar Villamor took over as rector and designed strategies to enhance the pastoral and social consciousness of seminarians through regular sessions in Personality Development, Psychology, and the Arts. It was during his time that the Lay-companion Program was started.
