"Yet when they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, the Lord brought them out of their distress. He calmed the storm and its waves quieted down. So they rejoiced that the waves became quiet, and he led them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his gracious love and for his awesome deeds on behalf of mankind." Helping with chores can be a way of honoring your parents. You can also honor them by giving them HOPE:

H-ugs. Whether touch is your parents’ love language or not, hugging them can make them feel loved and appreciated. How about a high five or a pat on the back?

O-bedience. Children, you belong to the Lord, and you do the right thing when you obey your parents. (Ephesians 6:1) While you are dependent on and live with your parents, they have authority over your life; honor them through your obedience.

P-rayer. Ask your parents how you can pray for them or briefly pray for them aloud for strength, good health, peace of mind, and wisdom in their work and taking care of your family. Every parent would appreciate prayers especially from their kids.

E-ncouragement. You can encourage your parents through affirming and appreciative words. Try writing a short but sweet thank you message on a post-it-note.

How do you show that you honor your parents?
Tell us about it, we would love to hear!

Aerobic exercise. Active lifestyle is key to keeping your body healthy and aerobic exercise is good for your heart! While gyms are closed, try zumba, skipping rope, or kickboxing at home. It’s not too late to develop healthy habits. Go for it!

Here’s to a quick ABCs Principles on Healthy Living:

A-ppearance. You can present yourself in the best way possible without having to wear designer clothes or lots of makeup. Taking care of your appearance can boost your confidence!

B-elief. Believe that God wants you to be healthy. He created you and He wants you to take care of yourself.

C-ontrol. Control the quality and quantity of your food intake. Besides regular exercise, seek proper rest and sleep. It takes discipline to practice self-control so make it a habit!

COVID has penetrated almost every country around the world.
No matter what happens around you or in your life, you can have peace of mind in this unstable world. Jesus is the Prince of Peace as Isaiah prophesied (Isaiah 9:6).

When we decide to put our trust in Jesus, we experience the peace He offers: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

How do you experience peace in a world of chaos? Let’s talk about it!

Have you considered slowing down as a good spiritual discipline? What disciplines can help you feel refreshed?

Here are some ideas on how to SLOW down:
S-top! Pause from what you’re doing and sit comfortably. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly. Think of being in a quiet place with someone who cares for you. Continue to breathe slowly for few minutes then open your eyes. Stretch and take a deep breath!

L-isten. What sound do you hear? Do you enjoy the silence? Not a lot of people are comfortable with silence but we have to be SILENT so we can LISTEN. Listen not just with your ears but with your heart.

O-bserve. Observe your surroundings. What do you see? When we slow down, we can give attention to some things we don’t usually notice and respond accordingly.

W-ait. In this fast-paced world, we all struggle with waiting. Now we all have to wait for our community quarantine to be lifted. While waiting, think of how you can use your time wisely.

S-top! L-isten. O-bserve. W-ait. SLOW down.

Wondering what to do in the next weeks while you STAY AT HOME due to Covid-19? Let’s exchange some ideas!

“We can expect seventy years, or maybe eighty, if we are healthy, but even our best years bring trouble and sorrow. Suddenly our time is up, and we disappear. Teach us to use wisely all the time we have.”

They Thought I Was A Teacher During My First Day Of College

Yes, it’s that time of year again, wherein we get mixed feelings about early mornings and friends we haven’t seen in a long time. The first day of class is definitely one of the highlights of any student’s life, especially when you’re a new student, and even more so when you’re a new student in the college level. When we were in our high school days, we’ve heard so much stories about this “college” thing – about how horrible a life it is, or about how exciting and awesome it is. Now that it’s finally here, well, we can only expect the unexpected. Whatever the case, entering college is one of the most exciting yet frightening experiences a student can have in his life. With that being said, let me tell you my first day of class story.

Now, the thing about studying in Velez College is that you are surrounded by geniuses! No, really. You get to be classmates with valedictorians, salutatorians, honour role people, and just plain smart kids. Being a student from a small school surrounded by the top people of some of the most prestigious schools out there, well, you do the math. Speaking of math, that’s where things get really interesting.

Like any first day of school of any new student, it was a bit chaotic. For the first hour or so, I got lost, but eventually I found my way to our classroom. Our first class was chemistry. We met our teacher, classmates, and things went on normally. After that class, our second class for the day, was math. We went to another classroom and waited. We waited for a while, but still, no teacher came. As freshmen, we wouldn’t want to leave the room and offend the teacher if ever he arrives and finds us about to leave our seats, now would we? So, yeah, we waited. However, as we waited, my mind went into overdrive. What if I stood up in front and facilitated a “getting to know you” activity in the class? Yes, for any normal person, that would seem crazy. Why would you embarrass yourself like that? What if the teacher actually came, what then? No, that would be weird… and so I did just that.

I crumpled a piece of paper in to a ball, stood up in front, and introduced myself to the class. In order to know each person, we passed around that paper ball to another person after we introduced ourselves. After that, I went on introducing some games I know. Not only that, I went and even talked about math since this was a math subject anyway. And yeah, the teacher never showed and I dismissed the class. I never intended to impersonate a teacher (because I thought they knew I was their classmate and all), but many ended up thinking that I was.

So, yeah, that was my first day of class story. Now, what point am I trying to make from all of this? No, I’m not saying that you should impersonate a teacher (unless you’d like to), but rather, don’t be afraid to stand out. College is a great opportunity for you to find and express yourself. Don’t let the fears other people put on you hinder you from becoming the best you can become. Don’t be afraid to try. You can succeed. Aim to be Suma Cum laude! Don’t be afraid that you’re surrounded by a myriad of smarter people, because the fact that you got in to this school means that you have just as much ability as them. Dance. Sing. Enjoy your life. God created you for great things.

So, what's your 1st day of class story in Velez?

You got this! Pause. Pray. Push. Repeat.

"Exams Here and Deadlines There, Oh My."

There seems to be no end to all the exams and deadlines that needs to be met. Accompanying these two is the constant pressure and stress that heavily rest on your shoulder. There are times that you want to give up, right? When it seems too much take time to pause, pray and then push again.

Pause. Take time to breathe, exhale and inhale. Drink ka ng water. Kaon sa ug gamay (GAMAY RA HA). Learn to take a break. Give yourself at most a 5 minute pause, don't get stuck here.

Pray. Commit your exams, deadlines, and your study time to the Lord. Proverbs chapter 21 verse 31 says "The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD." We can grind all we want but ultimately it is God that gives the victory.

Push. Hunat jud ug maayo! Give it all you've got. Walay forever sa exams. Your exams will soon come to an end. The outcome is not certain but if you give it your all, your chances of passing or acing your exams are higher.

When it feels too much again, repeat cycle. Pause. Pray. Push. Mahuman ra lagi ni.

From all of us here,
God bless!
