Sorry for this informal way of communicating this decision to you. But I do not know of a faster way. Because Cebu City has reverted back to the ECQ status, we have to postpone the canonical exams. We could conduct the exams online even with the ECQ but still it would be difficult since the office staff will not be around. Just wait for further announcements.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Christus Magister Noster on 22 August 2021, twenty-nine (29) of our brother seminarians will be instituted into the Ministries of Lectors and Acolytes, which will be conferred by THE MOST REVEREND MIDYPHIL B. BILLONES, D.D., S.Th.D, Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu.

We, therefore, exhort everyone to be one with us in praying for these courageous seminarians that as they are conferred with these holy responsibilities, they may each perform their ministries with zealous passion for the Word of God and with sincere love and devotion to the Eucharist, the summit and source of the Church's life.

Should you wish to participate and witness this momentous milestone of our brothers' seminary journey, there will be a live broadcast of this event here in our SMSC page. Please do keep yourselves posted.

May God bless us all.

SAINT OF THE DAY | St. Roch (San Roque)

Untrustworthy sources say he was probably born at Montpellier, France, son of the governor there. He was orphaned when he was twenty. He went on pilgrimage to Rome and devoted himself to caring for the victims of a plague that was ravaging Italy. He became a victim himself at Piacenza but recovered and was reputed to have performed many miracles of healing.

On his return to Montpellier, he was imprisoned for five years as a spy in pilgrim's disguise when his uncle, who was governor, ordered him imprisoned (His uncle failed to recognize him, and Roch failed to identify himself.) Roch died in prison and was only then identified as the former governor's son by a birthmark in the form of a cross on his chest. Another biographer says that he was arrested as a spy at Angers, Lombardi, and died in prison there.

When miracles were reported at his intercession after his death, a popular cult developed and he is invoked against pestilence and plague. He is also the patron of invalids. He is known as Rocco in Italy and Roque in Spain.

St. Roch is the patron saint of people with infectious diseases.

SMSC NEWS: Dumaguete Reclamation Project: "Morally wrong," says Bishop. "Underwater tomb and Monumental Ecological Disaster." - Scientist

August 15, 2021 | 9: 45 pm | Source: CBCP News & ABS-CBN News |
Published: August 15, 2021 & July 16, 2021

Bishop Julito Cortes of Dumaguete reiterated his opposition to the city’s proposed 174-hectare reclamation project — calling it “morally wrong”.

“If it is morally wrong, then, it is incumbent for Christians and people of goodwill not to support such projects, structures, or systems,” Cortes said.

He made the statement Monday during the city council’s virtual session on the controversial P23-billion project, dubbed “Smart City”.

Speaking before the city legislators, the bishop anchored his presentation on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si.

Cortes said the diocese opposes the project because of the “irreversible damage” the project could have on marine life.

He also raised “grave concerns” about the legality and the alleged corruption in the approval of the contract.

MANILA - An underwater tomb for marine ecosystems.

This is how an ecologist described the proposed 174 hectare reclamation project in Dumaguete City , which has drawn opposition from various sectors.

"I think we really need to avoid this because there is no doubt in my mind that is going to be a monumental ecological disaster. It’s going to be this tomb for marine ecosystems. It’s going to be this underwater tomb," Dr. Rene Abesamis of the Silliman University Institute of Environmental and Marine Sciences told ANC Headstart.

The proposed P23-billion 5G-Ready Smart Dumaguete City project is 174 hectares of mixed use development. It plans on building coastal wastewater treatment facility/wave protection, esplanade, marina, modern ferry port and raw reclamation and horizontal development.

"I guess the outrage comes from perceived lack of consultation. We have to understand how big this is. According to the press release, it's 174 hectares. That’s equivalent to maybe 4,000 basketball courts, 10 Lunetas. The image that the public information office released suggests its about 7 kilometers—that’s roughly the distance from Cubao to Guadalupe on EDSA—and Dumaguete is not a very big city. It doesn’t have a big coastline. It’s about 8.5 km long and this project is a massive project, it will occupy about 85 percent of that," he said.

The ecologist said the reclamation project may cause damage to Dumaguete's marine ecosystem.

The project could also impact the nearby Tañon Strait, a national marine protected area where about 14 species of marine mammals pass through the waters of Dumaguete.

Abesamis said the city government has yet to sign a memorandum of agreement for the Smart City project which generated opposition from many groups.

FEAST OF THE DAY | The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, both Body and Soul
——————————————————————
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church.

We find homilies on the Assumption going back to the sixth century. In following centuries, the Eastern Churches held steadily to the doctrine, but some authors in the West were hesitant. However by the 13th century there was universal agreement. The feast was celebrated under various names—Commemoration, Dormition, Passing, Assumption—from at least the fifth or sixth century. Today it is celebrated as a solemnity.

Scripture does not give an account of Mary’s assumption into heaven. Nevertheless, Revelation 12 speaks of a woman who is caught up in the battle between good and evil. Many see this woman as God’s people. Since Mary best embodies the people of both Old and New Testaments, her assumption can be seen as an exemplification of the woman’s victory.

Furthermore, in 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul speaks of Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’ life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to believe in Mary’s share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven.

O Mary, Queen assumed into heaven,
PRAY FOR US!
