Hi Kent,

You probably don't remember me. Your dad baptized me in 2005 and you're high school friends with one of my former officemates, who by the way is a Calvinist and a Bible Baptist.

I just watched what you said in your sermon dated August 30, 2020 Sunday morning, and let me honestly say that this clip is probably one of the worst misrepresentations of Calvinism I've ever heard. I admit there are bad examples who claim to be Calvinists but still, they do not represent the doctrines of grace.

First, Calvinists exalt God as the author and finisher of salvation. I'm sure even with your evangelism you will never claim that you caused the person to repent and believe, right? Don't you pray for God to open the hearts and minds of believers? If you do, then you believe, as we do, in God's sovereignty and work in salvation.

Second, don't you rejoice in the Lord when someone trusts in Christ? I'm sure you don't praise yourself or the person but you give glory to God, just as we do.

Third, isn't Spurgeon, a definite soul winner and faithful shepherd, a Calvinist, according to his own words? Him, and many others, are proof that the accusation that we don't evangelize is nothing except slander.

Fourth, you accuse us of not caring about how we live. That's slander. We affirm in God's sovereignty in electing, justifying and also sanctifying His people. Those who are not being sanctified are probably not even believers in the first place. We don't believe in meaningless "eternal security" where you assure a person that he's saved no matter what he does. This contradicts Scripture.

Four points lang Kent. There's more but we can stop here. I'm not saying this to pick a fight. You're the one who slandered us in your pulpit. Take this as a fair but still brotherly response. If you want to discuss in a civil manner the doctrines of grace, we would be glad to oblige you.

In Christ,

A concerned Calvinist

Proverbs 16:32
He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.

Many today are into the cult of self-realization, but the Bible teaches self-surrender. In self-realization all of the answers are in you; but in self-surrender, all of the answers are in Jesus. In self-realization you are centered in you—there is a preoccupation with number one. Self may be dedicated, but it is dedicated to self. It may be religious, but it is a religious self. We are living in a generation of “self-aholics” consumed by themselves.

In 1 Samuel 24, the greatest victory that David won was not a victory over Saul. The great victory that David won was a victory over himself. David refused to take vengeance on Saul; he refused to do what he was able to do because he gained a great victory. He practiced what the New Testament says in Romans 12:21, “Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.”

How are all Christians called to take victory over themselves?
How is God calling you to pursue victory over self specifically right now?

Write down some practical ways you can have victory over yourself as a means of submitting to Christ. Take steps to put at least one of these practices into action today. CONTINUE FAMILY 2021

Ephesians 2:6
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Where is Jesus? He is at the right hand of the majesty on high. All things are beneath His feet. Where are you? You may say, “I’m sitting right here.” Physically, yes. But notice what it says in Ephesians 1:22: “And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.” And then in Ephesians 2:5, “Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.” We were raised. We died with Jesus, and we were also raised with Him. God has “raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

So are those who are in Christ on the Earth or in the heavenly places? The answer is yes and yes. Physically we are here, but in Christ we have been raised. When He died, we died. His death had our name on it. When He was raised from the grave, we were raised from the grave. When He ascended, we ascended. As He is seated at the right hand of God, so are we in Him.

How often do you think of the reality of being not only saved by Christ but also raised to the heavenly places with Him?
How might regularly reflecting on this truth change your daily perspective?

Take time today to dig into the Bible to learn more of what it says about Christ being raised and to reflect on what that means for those who are in Him. CONTINUE FAMILY 2021

1 Peter 2:11-12
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

This passage teaches us that to be a citizen of Heaven is to have a certain standard of character. We are to live a righteous, godly life. There is to be in our hearts and our lives none of what the Bible calls fleshly lust. A child of God ought to be pure and clean as the driven snow.

There are certain things that war against the soul. The word for war here speaks of a strategy or a conspiracy. There is a conspiracy, born in Hell, that wars against your soul, the soul of your family, the soul of your church, and the soul of this nation. We are at war with unseen forces from the very pit of Hell. There is a battle, and to be prepared for the battle, we must be absolutely and totally clean. We must renounce and abstain from everything that is wrong and embrace everything that is right. This passage calls us to live such a pure, godly, clean, righteous, honest forthright life that, even grudgingly, those that hate you will have to admit that there is a difference.

Why is it important that Christ-followers have a high standard for character?
What things of the world that would draw you away from Christ do you need to renounce?

Resolve to pursue godly character, and then take practical steps to live in accordance with God’s will and eliminate ungodly things from your life. CONTINUE MISSIONS 2021
