INTER MIRIFICA: the key to beautiful future with the teachings of the church

When I was reading and feeding, at the same time, information into my half empty mind the knowledge regarding INTER MIRIFICA, promulgated by POPE PAUL VI, I can barely say that what the document has contained is unseen right now during this modern era. Though influencing men to be in-lined and to be containers of church teachings, sad to say, they have acquired such opposite practice/s because of media. Media do not bring on its own the things that it deserves to contain, and at the same time, do not provide the things that this ought to provide to men through social communication. But here comes INTER MIRIFICA which holds the future beautiful nature and norm/s of men regarding to church teachings, which are intended for everyone’s knowledge for men to be able to live the real and the almost forgotten nature and reality of the purpose of life here on earth, to live in accordance with the teachings of the church. I’m sure, that is supposedly our primary and general obligation above all obligations. However, hearing and living with the beauty of the modern world’s technology, the primary obligation is covered with things contrary to the teachings of the church. What would quickly come up into our minds about technology is what all of us ever desired: it is making the world small through various social communications. By that sense, evidently technology has a very important role for us men and for our living to be easy. Unfortunately this has been used incorrectly and improperly. It is clear that instead of using it for good, some users are constantly providing and feeding society with information that are obviously falsely composed and which are also apart from what the church is teaching men. Sadly, choosing to provide information in-lined to church teachings which is what we are all ought to do seem to be out of their priorities and vaguely given attention They might have also forgotten that the most number of media users are the children. And based on reality, children are fast learners and there is no doubt that they could not acquire whatever things fed to them. Therefore, the future nature of our society depends on newsmen, writers, actors, designers, producers, displayers, distributors, operators and sellers, as well as the critics and all others who play any part in the production and transmission of mass presentations because they are affecting worst every users of technology, specifically in doing communications, most especially the children, the hope of the world. But sad to say, as they grow, they are welcomed and confronted with a lot of things that will lead them to attain such misconceptions regarding how we should live with technology and how we must manipulate the social communications.
For adults, usually and obviously nowadays, we tend to follow what are new most especially to the norms being formed within our society. Careless is not the right term in describing the reality of our society because the society has the omit choice to care less for what is must due to the nature of media. But society cares more about its being up to date constantly instead; of what are the “news” without minding whether these are bad or good, most especially those that they found in media. Therefore, according to INTER MIRIFICA, men behind media (professional media men) must fulfill their duty, they must or may provide everything as long as they have communicated what are true and complete, within the bounds of justice and charity in accordance to the teachings of the church. This means that in both the search for news and reporting it, there must be full respect for the laws of morality and for the legitimate rights and dignity of individuals. For not all knowledge is helpful, “it is charity that edifies”. These professional media men have an important role in attaining the common good of the people.
As stated in the document, correct manipulation of media can give service to humans. Also true that we have given the freewill to do everything, but let us also remember that we have given also minds to comprehend every situation in life. Therefore, we must “learn” to “respect” the freewill that God has given to us. We must learn how to manipulate it, because if we failed to do so, through media, we are leading our way towards evil. In the same sense, we are making our own way contrary towards goodness which we are all ought to be and have.
Therefore, we must achieve the common good; to absorb and acquire the teachings of the church. And since we are occupied by media, in order to have a great achievement, we must think first before we click.

"SPREADING THE GOOD NEWS FOR THE COMMON GOOD
THROUGH SOCIAL COMMUNICATIONS”
by:Sem. DinDin Abellana

Through the various talents we all have, the knowledge and information we hold in our minds, among the wonderful discoveries people share especially in technology, we are all obliged to spread the good news, as we are called to be Holy.
The Church opens a door to all of us, building bridges to people with the help of social media, via movies, radio, television and so much more, hence social media is also a guide to instruct us in their proper use. We all have different perspectives on these things; time by time we are bombarded with much information, mostly on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the likes. But are these information true and complete? Think twice, because the moral responsibility falls on those who play any part of these acts or displays. One must always be mindful in giving his/her information to others; it must be guided within the bounds of morality.
Long before, our grandparents didn’t really know what media and communication was, but they read newspapers, watched television, and listened to the radio. They were in a consistent state of media and communications yet didn’t even know that they were doing it! We, the young, are the ones who are occupied most in using gadgets in these present times. We even invest time in using our cellphones to procure our wants and needs, to recreate and to spend our time with these things. In communicating with others, we must give full respect to which we are addressing; we are to give decent, true and complete information or idea.
In our innovation of technology, with our collection of skills and methods to solve problems easily and decently, we invent useful tools for our daily activities. We use cellphones, computer, televisions and the likes to communicate with others; it is not a surprise that even elementary kids nowadays have high quality phones than their parents. Using these powerful tools can also lead great harm to others, but hopefully we use these tools as instruments to help others, to advocate responsibility in using these instruments.
I ken we all play a part on the media, play that part as for the greater glory of God, for the prevalent good of the people, and for the salvation of all.
“Spreading the Good News of Salvation with the help and support of the media”
By: Sem. Laurence Anthony Gumban Basamot

After reading the Inter Merifica, I have learned that social media is very important to us to communicate other people and to spread the Good News of Salvation also with the support of the social media.

Media could help the men to preach and announce that Christ our Lord is the savior and to bear salvation to all men and thus is obliged to preach the Gospel and when using social media we should share and like our God Jesus that he is truly present to us.

The Church recognizes that these can be of great service to mankind and instruction as well as to the spread and support of the Kingdom of God through social media.

It is therefore an essential right of the Church to have at its disposal and to make use any of these media to the extent as they are important or useful for the command of Christians and all its efforts for the well-being of souls.

Those who make use of the media of communications, especially us the millennials or teenagers, should take steps and learn not to be a judgemental person and parents should guide their children and remember that they have a serious duty to guard carefully lest shows to affect their children under other circumstances.

Lastly, In order that those who make use of these media may fulfill the moral code, they ought not to neglect and to spread the Good News to the world they must look, then, to the nature of what is communicated, given the special character of each of these media and we should always spread the Good News and the Gospel of the Lord through social media.

MODERNIZATION OF COMMUNICATION
by: Mark Daniel C. Gamallo
In this fast and modern world, we are bombarded with technologies you could only dream of 50 years ago. Communication through social media truly has improved and is now rapidly becoming a regular thing today. For me, I truly believe that these modern forms of communication are helpful because they spread, help, and teach people new things in a matter of minutes. Information is quickly disseminated and people will eventually know the trending news and hot topics happening on the other side of the world with just one click.

This kind of advancement in communication is actually beneficial, if used in the right and proper manner. Communication through the internet can be good, but it can also lead to a lot of things. First, the dissemination of fake, incomplete, and untruthful news or articles. Second, it can be a way to attack people you hate by bashing or shaming them publicly on the internet; and third, kids and teenagers in the new generation will easily be exposed to the digital platforms and social networking sites which might hinder and confuse their developing minds especially in relation to their spiritual development since they would rather spend more time on gadgets than to be with the empirical world. On the contrary, this new kind of communication is not purely bad. Pro’s in these form of communication include: the fast dissemination of information, people can easily be updated about certain happenings, and above all, a new avenue for the Church to use in her evangelization especially to the youth in order for them to be guided about the different social responsibilities and moral standards in using such technologies.

Moreover, as Catholics we should therefore use these new forms of technologies in the right and Christian way and in accordance with church teachings. Presently, there are many misuse with such technologies especially in the youth sector, since they tend to become more post-modernist thinkers themselves wherein norms and moralities are shaded by their own selfishness and convenience.

This Platform was and is intended for a purpose that is good. It was intended for easy and fast way of spreading supposedly the “truth” of the world and of the evangelization of the Christian faith, but people misunderstood its purpose and used the power of social media communication to advertise and spread false teachings, and mediocre comments/articles.

Lastly, not everything is lost, for I believe that we still have time to change and be taught by what is right and is ought to be done. Technology is good but we must also look at ourselves and examine if our character in the virtual world aligns well with our Christian values and morals in the empirical world. Yes, technology advances but our Morals, spirituality, norms, and Christian Doctrines must always be instilled and situated in the heart of everything we do.

11 AUGUST: FEAST OF ST. PHILOMENA
Patroness of Pope John XXIII Seminary

***THE STORY OF ST. PHILOMENA***

On May 25, 1802, excavators in the ancient Catacomb of St. Priscilla in Rome came upon a well-preserved shelf tomb sealed with terr-cotta slabs in the manner usually reserved for nobility or great martyrs. The tomb was marked with three tiles, inscribed with the following confusing words: LUMENA / PAXTE / CUMFI.

However, if one places the first tile last and separates the words properly, the very intelligible sentence emerges: Pax tecum, Filumena, which is “Peace be with you, Philomena.” Also inscribed on the tiles were symbols: a lily, arrows, an anchor and a lance, which would appear to indicate virginity and martyrdom. Inside the coffin there were discovered the remains of a girl of about twelve or thirteen years of age, along with a vial or ampulla of her dried blood.

Transferred to the Treasury of the Rare Collections of Christian Antiquity in the Vatican, the remains were soon forgotten by the public, especially since no record existed of a virgin martyr named Philomena. But in 1805, a Neapolitan priest, Don Francesco di Lucia, traveling to Rome with his newly appointed bishop, requested and, after a brief delay, received the relics of this martyr “Philomena” to enshrine in his village church at Mugnano, near Naples.

Immediately upon the official donation of St. Philomena’s sacred remains, signal favors began to be granted through her intercession and unusual events to occur. The favors, graces and even miracles started to increase, even before her enshrinement at Mugnano, and they steadily grew in number thereafter – such that this virgin martyr soon earned the title, “Philomena, Powerful with God”. In 1837, only 35 years after her exhumation, Pope Gregory XVI elevated this “Wonder-Worker of the Nineteenth Century” to sainthood. In an act unprecedented in the history of Catholicism, she became the only person recognized by the Church as a Saint solely on the basis of her powerful intercession, since nothing historical was known of her except her name and the evidence of her martyrdom.

St. Philomena has been successfully invoked by her supplicants in every sort of needed, such that she has become another patron of “hopeless” and “impossible” cases, like St. Jude or St. Rita, but she is known to be especially powerful in cases involving conversion of sinners, return to the Sacraments, expectant mothers, destitute mothers, problems with children, unhappiness in the home, sterility, priests and their work, help for the sick, the missions, real estate, money problems, food for the poor and mental illness. But truly, as her devotees discovered, no case, of whatever matter, is too trivial or too unimportant to concern her.

“We have become priests because for some unknowable reason God chose us. To assume that you are the best and you are better than others is a thorn and a positive poison which will kill your vocation - the seed of the very virulent w**d which we call self-entitlement which as it grows, it becomes clericalism.”
