Why do Kabbalists call divine expression/energy “light”? I found the following answers in Chabad philosophy. 1) Light is clearly ONLY an expression of its source, it has no independent identity. 2) When the source is blocked, it immediately expires. Its very survival, depends on its constant connection to its source. 3) A luminary makes no effort to shine, it simply radiates by its very existence. The Creator does NOT exert effort when creating.

29 Av, Today’s Tanya summary, click here for audio https://soundcloud.com/shmuel-halevi/what-are-you-financial-priorities-29-av-tanya-summery

My dear brothers and friends, who are like my very own soul. Those that are hibernating in the meaninglessness of our times. I come to awaken those that sleep, to open the eyes of the blind.

May they properly focus to ensure that, all their desires, pursuits and goals, are connected to the source of all life. Let this include both their soul’s and body’s perspective.

Bodily satisfaction should not be the sole motive for financial pursuit. Let the people of Israel not resemble other nations, that supply sustenance to their wives and children, out of selfish love. Rather, these pursuits should be connected to, “the one truth”.

Do not testify falsely, with closed eyes, during “Shema”. There we proclaim how we accept the Almighty as the “One Creator”, throughout the heavens and earth. When we open their eyes, is it no longer true?

The proper approach to financial pursuit is, to enliven all the divine souls. This is similar to what the Creator does on a constant basis. He provides life to all. A person’s wife and children are definitely first in line. This is the Torah’s obligation. However, this precedence excludes the righteous people of every generation. This is especially true regarding the righteous people in the Holy Land since, there is no one like them in the rest of the world.

[Note from RSK: The common motive for financial pursuit is, to earn personal satisfaction. Providing for family is also rooted in selfishness. It sustains the personal benefit they provide. The Tanya aims to invoke a more meaningful financial drive, to accomplish the Creator’s mission. Supporting a worthy cause or needy person, should not be limited to surplus funds. It should always play an essential role in a person’s financial considerations.]

28 Av, Today’s Tanya summary

[Note from RSK: A seed causes the growth of a plant that is incomparably greater than itself. The seed itself, does not possess this ability. When it fuses with the soil, it triggers the vegetative energy within the earth. The earth’s energy, is what truly generates the plant.]

This is a metaphor for the effect of charity. An act of charity elevates “feminine water”, to the source of souls. This is called the “congregation of Israel”. The Zohar calls this the “lower mother”. The Talmud calls it the “Shechina”, (divine dwelling).

All the divine attributes are unified within this level. The first attribute is “חסד” kindness. The “feminine water” elevated by charity, arouses this attribute. This triggers the divine light to descend on the souls of Israel, in an awesome, powerful revelation. This revelation transpires, at least during prayer.

The Divine greatness is unfathomable, everything is worthless relative to it. Nevertheless, is humbles itself to make this revelation. As the Talmud says; “Wherever you find his greatness, you find his humility”.

[Note from RSK: The reason we can perceive the slightest amount of divinity is because, the Almighty choses to express himself. Since the Almighty is infinitely greater than any creation, any interaction with us, is an unimaginable act humility.]

This is especially true when the Creator radiates light on a soul, in a body. This is the ultimate concept of “deliverance”. It converts darkness into light. The Zohar calls the body a “snake’s hide”.

This explains the Psalm; “He plants charity that sprouts deliverance”. Charity plants a seed in the divine “land”. It sprouts “Deliverance”. The spiritual “desired land” is the “Shechina” and “congregation of Israel”. The reason “Shechina” is called the “divine dwelling” is because, it is enclothed in our world. An act of charity in our world, “plants” a seed in the “desired land”, the “Shechina”.

This is especially true regarding charity to the Holy Land. It directly correlates with its heavenly counterpart. By doing so, the “seed” is absorbed immediately. Nothing can block the physical “land of life” from the spiritual one. In other lands, certain factors could hinder the effect of charity.

A plant sprouts, after a seed is planted. The seed may cause the growth however, the new plant is not an extension of the seed itself.

The actual seed decays and fuses with the soil. The power for growth is in the soil, NOT the seed. The seed merely activates the energy in the soil.

The new plant is the same species as the seed. However, the outcome is incomparably greater than the seed itself. A seed of cucumber, for example, will grow a multitude of cucumbers.

The seed does not possess such an awesome capability. It merely triggers the vegetative power of the earth. The seed is merely a “arousal from below” triggering this reaction. This is referred to by the Arizal as “ elevating feminin waters”

In the spiritual worlds there is both kindness and strength, חסד and גבורה. The purpose of kindness is to provide and reveal. The purpose of strength is to withdraw and conceal.

Material actions in this world, determine which divine power is activated. Performing kindness, by providing for others, activates divine kindness, est. As the sage say; “The measure a man uses for others, measures back for him”

Material kindness is parallel to spiritual kindness. Therefore, material kindness in this world, should be reciprocated by spiritual kindness in the world to come. Receiving divine light while still in the darkness of this world, seems to be out of proportion? Such an experience is far greater than the entire world to come. This is the higher level teshuva, spiritual renewal. As the sages say; “An hour of teshuva and good deeds, in this world, is greater than the entire life, in the world to come”.

The world to come is merely a radiance of the Creator’s name. In this world, we connect to the essential core of the Almighty.

[Note from LIT: This confirms that receiving divine light, while still in a body, is disproportionately beyond a person’s “measure”. How then, can an act of material kindness invoke an unparalleled level of divine kindness? To be explained further.]

There is a general radiance that comes from Torah study. This illumination is equal for everyone. There is also a more particular type of Torah’s light. That illumination is different for every soul.

Every organ of a body has a unique function, the eye sees, the ear hears est. Each commandment also has a unique function. The type of divine illumination caused by each command, varies from one to another.

A sage once asked his fellow; “What commandment was your father most careful with?”.

Each person and every generation has a specific task. Although every commandment must be upheld, there is a particular area that must be performed with extra vigilants. The illumination caused by that particular task, is greater than any other.

Every soul in Israel must reincarnate numerous times, in order to fulfil all of the 613 commandments. It is possible, that a soul already performed every requirement, however, a particular task needs to be done with extra enthusiasm.

The reason a person’s unique “task” causes greater illumination than any other, is beyond reason. It simply is, what the Creator decided. This is similar to a lottery, a person gains a resource, just because is came out that way.

[Note from RSK: The creator does NOT do things randomly. There is a reason why each person was given their particular task. However, from a person’s perspective, they are born with a certain mission and it is beyond their capability to understand why.

Every “Mitzva” command, correlates to an organ or sinew. Each soul and every generation also has a similar correlation.

A hand could do certain functions of a foot, however, the foot does it best. If a foot fails to function, the entire body is crippled, even if the hand could substitute. Similarly, it is extremely vital that a person perform their unique spiritual “lot”, regardless of how much other good they do.]
