Open Heaven 11 October 2019 Friday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye – A Lover of Gifts? Topic: A Lover of Gifts? Memorise: And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. – Luke 12:15 Read: 2 Kings 5:15-27 (KJV) 15 And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 16 But he said, As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused. 17 And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray thee, be given to thy servant two mules’ burden of earth? for thy servant will henceforth offer neither burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, but unto the LORD. 18 In this thing the LORD pardon thy servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of Rimmon, the LORD pardon thy servant in this thing. 19 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him a little way. 20 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said, Behold, my master hath spared Naaman this Syrian, in not receiving at his hands that which he brought: but, as the LORD liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat of him. 21 So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet him, and said, Is all well? 22 And he said, All is well. My master hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of garments. 23 And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in two bags, with two changes of garments, and laid them upon two of his servants; and they bare them before him. 24 And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed. 25 But he went in, and stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went no whither. 26 And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants? 27 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow. Bible in One Year: 1 Chronicles 26-27, Revelation 6:3-17 MESSAGE: It is sad but true that some people love gifts more than their very lives. In other words, they are covetous and love to reap where they did not sow. In order not to be caught in this devilish snare, our Lord Jesus Christ warns us against covetousness in today’s memory verse. One man who loved gifts exceedingly was Elisha’s servant, Gehazi. His master rejected the gifts offered by someone who God had healed through him, because he understood the principle of “freely ye have received, freely give,” which led him to say in 2 Kings 5:16a: “As the LORD liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none.” However, greedy Gehazi was not happy with this response, so he decided to run after the rejected gifts. He went and collected them in secret, not knowing that in the realm of the spirit, “there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known” (Luke 12:2). Imagine the shock he felt when Elisha said to him in 2 Kings 5:26: “…Went not mine heart with thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?” Dumbfounded, Gehazi could not answer these questions. You need to learn some critical lessons from his experience today. Gehazi did not know that the spiritual eyes given to his master followed him as he executed his devious scheme. If Elisha’s spiritual eyes could see the things Gehazi did in secret, how much more will God’s eyes which runs to and fro the earth, see those who secretly toy with sin? Also, learn that there is a time for everything. There is a time to receive gifts and there are times they must be rejected. Elisha asked Gehazi whether it was the right time to receive gifts. Gehazi did not consider this when he went ahead to demand and not just receive gifts from Naaman. However, this earned him God’s judgement, and he instantly became leprous. Beloved, it is vain to run after gifts that are not approved of God, Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 says: “10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. 11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?” Beware of the love for gifts because some gifts are ill-motivated and can destroy your future, like it happened to Gehazi. May the Lord spare you the agony of gifts from ill-gotten wealth in Jesus’ Name. Prayer Point: Father, please deliver me from the snare of covetousness in Jesus’ Name.
Open Heaven 10 October 2019 Thursday Daily Devotional By Pastor E. A. Adeboye Topic: Crowd Pulling Miracles Memorise: And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. – John 6:2 Read: Matthew 19:1-2 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan; 2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there. Bible in One Year: 1 Chronicles 23-25, Revelation 5:1-6:2 MESSAGE: All through the gospels, we see that great multitudes followed Jesus wherever He went. One reason for this is the great miracles He performed in people’s lives. We see an example of this in today’s Bible reading, where great multitudes followed Him and He healed them. Jesus is still in the business of healing and performing miracles today. Those who teach that the days of miracle are over are wrong. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is risen from the dead and remains alive today and forevermore (Revelation 1:18). That same Jesus who healed the sick, raised the dead and cleansed lepers can do the same works today because He is alive, working His miracles through His followers. The signs that the Lord said will follow those who believe indicate that the days of miracles are not over (Mark 16:15-18). Moreover, our Lord also said that we will do the works that He did and even do greater works than His (John 14:12). Some argue that these miraculous works ended with the early apostles of Jesus Christ. This is equally wrong, because while giving us the mandate of the Great Commission, our Lord said in Matthew 28:20: “…lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” If He is with us today as He was with the apostles, then He will also do through us the works He did through them. Nevertheless, as we proclaim the message of the good news, we must not be lopsided in our preaching or indulge in preaching half-truths. The totality of God’s word must be preached to all. Our Lord Jesus Christ was not imbalance in His teachings on the kingdom of God. Unfortunately, some preachers today tend to be like the Pharisees and scribes of Jesus’ days by focusing on some aspects of Christ’s messages to the detriment of others. Such preachers should take heed to Jesus’ words in Matthew 23:23, which says: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.” Jesus Christ is here saying, “I do not condemn you for teaching on tithing the tiniest income, but you left out some things that are more important, which you ought to do in addition to what you are doing already.” Brethren, how do we show people the reality of Jesus’ resurrection without manifesting His miracles? Even the most ardent critic cannot argue against physical proof of God’s power (John 4:48, Acts 1:3). When your local assembly becomes a miracle center, you will need little or no publicity before people begin to troop in to discover the Jesus whom you preach. Are signs and wonders following your declaration of the gospel? Prayer Point: Father, please establish Your word in my mouth with signs, wonders and miracles.

Topic: The Unchanging Christ

Memorise: Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

Read: John 5:20-29 (KJV)
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 22-24

“For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” – Malachi 3:6

The statement above was made by God the Father and is representative of the entire God-head.

We live in very dynamic times, and this could make the future frightening, but there is hope for those who have faith in the Unchanging Christ, the Son of the Living God. Everything can change but God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit will never change; neither will His standards.

“And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.” – Luke 16:17

He said to those who are going into marriage “…Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.” (Mark 10:11-12). When the Pharisees attempted to justify divorce from the point of view of the Law of Moses, Jesus said: “Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female… Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:4,8.)

Whoever decides to flout this divine arrangement does so to his or her own peril, even though the consequence may not be immediate. Reuben slept with his stepmother but the consequence surfaced after many decades when he should have received blessings from his father (Genesis 49:4).

May those things that we regard as inconsequential not prevent us from entering into the Kingdom of God in the mighty name of Jesus. God’s standard does not change. Remember, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Prayer Point:
Father, please build up my faith in the unchanging Christ.

Topic: End-Time Reformers

Memorise: The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. – Mark 1:3

Read: 2 Kings 23:1-8 (KJV)
1 And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.
2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.
3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.
4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel.
5 And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.
6 And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.
7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.
8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand at the gate of the city.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 19-21

At various times in history, whenever the people of God appeared to have lost their spiritual antennae, God would usually raise a reformer to start off a revival. In biblical terms, a reformer is a person ordained by God to carry out correctional changes in order to rectify ungodly practices. May we yield ourselves to be used as reformers to ignite the fire of revival in the body of Christ today in the mighty name of Jesus.

Reformers include Josiah, Asa, and Hezekiah – kings who rules over Israel at different times in history, as well as prophets Ezekiel, Ezra, Nehemiah and John the Baptist to mention a few. The reformation of Asa – king of Judah is summarized in 1 Kings 15:12-13 thus:

“12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. 13 And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from being queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.”

True Christians who once pledge allegiance to God could afterwards turn back to live contrary to their avowed beliefs and declaration of faith. Some people come to accept Jesus at the peak of their hopeless situations only to abandon Him after receiving divine solutions to their problems. The Church is currently in a state of regression; many Christians are no longer living according to God’s word but rather, the standards of the world.

We the children of God must be reformers – people who would do the right thing no matter the cost. We must be people who will instruct fledgling and backslidden Christians, as well as unbelievers to completely obey the word of God at all times. God is seeking reformers; are you one?

Prayer Point:
Father, please help me to be a reformer in these end times, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Topic: Gates of Adversity must be Lifted

Memorise: And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one’s bands were loosed. – Acts 16:26

Read: Psalm 24:7-10 (KJV)
7 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.
10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 16-18

Gates of adversity are seemingly insurmountable obstacles – be it an individual, kingdom or situation, obstructing the progress of a person or group of people.

Biblical examples of gates of adversity include Pharaoh with the Egyptian army, the wall of Jericho and Goliath the Philistine. Situations representative of gate of adversity include mountains, poverty, sickness, slavery, captivity, siege, and barrenness. Those who are held bound by such gates would therefore find it extremely difficult to succeed in life. These conditions have consistently proven insurmountable by human effort, but Mark 10:27 says “…With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”

God’s purpose for mankind is seen in Genesis 1:28 where God commanded us to “…be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion…” Manifestations of contrary circumstances in life are abnormalities usually brought about by sin and hidden works of the devil.

“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” – Psalm 24:7

My Daddy – the creator of heaven and earth, the Almighty, can destroy every gate of adversity. Zechariah 4:7 says, “Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain…” Isaiah 10:27 also says “…and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”

Are you troubled by any gate of adversity? If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, do so now. If you are born again, then commit to serving God for the rest of your life and He will fight for you. I command every gate of adversity in your life to be destroyed now in the mighty name of Jesus.

Prayer Point:
Father, please uproot every gate of adversity in my life and family today, in the mighty name of Jesus.

Topic: Baby King?

Memorise: Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning! – Ecclesiastes 10:16

Read: Ecclesiastes 10:16-18 (KJV)
16 Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child, and thy princes eat in the morning!
17 Blessed art thou, O land, when thy king is the son of nobles, and thy princes eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!
18 By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 13-15

In the previous study, the father was rightly described as the priest of the home. He is however also the king of the home. What a father does will have an effect on every member of his family. As a father, you cannot afford to act like a child. From our memory verse, we see that it is the family that would suffer for the childishness of their king (the father).

Remember that everything you do is an example for your children. When you drink or send your son to buy you cigarettes, you are already introducing him to that lifestyle. When your children see you having an affair with a strange woman, you are sowing a terrible seed in their hearts. The way you talk to their mother is probably how your sons will talk to their wives too. The low self-esteem of their mother due to how you treat her will probably become the self-esteem of your daughters too.

As mentioned earlier, you are the priest of the home; when the priest is spiritually asleep, God help that home! There are some demonic issues that a father need only issue a command for them to disappear, but if he is a spiritual baby, such issues would linger. As a father, how often do you pray for and on your children? Are you deliberate about teaching them the word of God?

Another reason for you to watch your spiritual life is that children could reap the harvest of the spiritual seeds their fathers have sown. In 1 Kings 11:34, God softened Solomon’s punishment for misbehaving because of David his father.

“Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand: but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servant’s sake, whom I chose, because he kept my commandments and my statutes:” – 1 Kings 11:34

Jonathan on the other hand was a good boy, but he partook in the punishment of his father and died a shameful death. I pity any child who has a baby as a father and I pray that God will rescue such children from any danger that their father’s ignorance or ‘childishness’ can cause them in the mighty name of Jesus.

Are you a mature father or a baby one?

Topic – Marriage: Christ’s Example II

Memorise: For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. – Ephesians 5:25

Read: Ephesians 5:25-31 (KJV)
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 10-12

Christ has an undying love for the Church. Since His relationship with the Church is our model, let me ask: Brother, do you love your wife enough to die for her?

If a husband loves his wife genuinely, a lot of the usual problems they complain about would be avoided. As a man, you should not buy new shirts for yourself and ‘forget’ to get for your wife; that may just show how little you love her. 2 Corinthians 8:9 says Jesus became poor so that we can be rich. She should be your priority, looking better and more radiant than you. This is one thing I admire about men from the igbo ethnic group of Nigeria. They take very good care of their wives. While the man may don just singlets and shorts, his wife would be arrayed in the best fashion.

Some men find it difficult to spend time with their wives. If you really love someone, you should, you should spend time with the person. Jesus said if you call Him at any time, He would answer (Jeremiah 33:3). That is how you should be with your wife; anytime she needs you, you should be there. You are the priest of the home just as Jesus is the Church’s high priest.

When you express your love for your wife, she will cook better meals for you, and look more radiant, more beautiful for you.

“…He that loveth his wife loveth himself.” – Ephesians 5:28

From the experience of Job, we see that a man’s wife is his life. God told Satan that he could touch all that Job had except his life. Satan killed Job’s children, destroyed all his property, inflicted his flesh with sicknesses and diseases, but did not touch his wife. She was unscathed because God had said “Don’t touch Job’s life”; and since they were one, his life was hers and hers was his. Whatever you do to your wife, you are actually doing to yourself.

She should be loved, protected, nourished and cherished greatly because your life depends on it. God is taking note! If you don’t believe, read Malachi 2:12-14. Don’t cheat yourself.

How well do you express your love for your wife? Remember, actions speak louder than words.

Topic: Make Soulwinning Your Lifestyle

Memorise: The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. – Proverbs 11:30

Read: Luke 10:1-3 (KJV)
1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.
3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves.

Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 3-4, 2 Chronicles 1, Psalms 72

Despite all your endeavours, if you are not actively winning souls, you are courting fruitlessness, and believe me, you don’t want to face the consequences of being fruitless, as stated in John 15:1-2:

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”

If you are wise, you will make soul winning a priority in everything you do. When churches organize programmes with great crowds gathered and at the end of the day, there is no call for salvation, I just think “what a waste of time, effort and money.” What is the essence of doing anything at all in the Church if it will not ultimately lead more people to heaven? What is the essence of organizing concerts, doing jamboree and shouting to praise the Most High God if we do not prioritize His very heart beat – bringing lost souls back to His Kingdom? If you are a leader in any capacity in the body of Christ, I am speaking to you now. Whatever you are planning to organize in the Church that will not ultimately win souls to God’s kingdom or help already won souls to stand more firmly for God is a complete waste of time. If you are not bearing fruits, God Himself will take you away from the Vine. What a fearful thing it is if God Himself separates you from Jesus Christ!

In your secular activities too, you must use every opportunity to win souls. Imagine how many terrorists would have been won to Christ, imagine how many parents of wayward children would have trained their children on the right path, if we had been using every available opportunity to win souls.

Anytime I am invited for honorary awards anywhere around the world, as long as I have that microphone in my hand and a few seconds to talk, I will appreciate the giver of the award and remind them that Jesus is coming soon with His own reward. No matter where you are, no matter who you are, no matter what you do, make soulwinning your lifestyle.

How well do you use all platforms at your disposal to win souls into the Kingdom of God?
