St John's Co-Cathedral

This is the official page of St John’s Co-Cathedral, a gem of Baroque art & architecture built as the conventual church for the Knights of St John.

Commissioned in 1572 by Grand Master Jean de la Cassière as the conventual church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John and designed by the celebrated Maltese military architect Gerolamo Cassar, St John’s Co-Cathedral stands as a unique monument of international importance. The church is dedicated to St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Order. Today, St John’s is also a venue for cultural events and is one of the most popular cultural attractions visited by tourists in Malta. It is administered by the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation, which was set up in 2001 to ensure the church's and museum’s conservation.

Mission: The Foundation administers the Church and Museum in order to ensure its effective conservation and management as a historic and architectural monument as well as a sacred place of worship. Without affecting the integrity of the sacred and the historical nature of the church, the Foundation’s administration is working hard to generate revenue to be used for the maintenance and restoration of St John’s Co-Cathedral and its museum. The Foundation is also responsible for enhancing the presentation of The Collections and increasing the accessibility for the benefit of the general public, scholars and researchers. The Foundation members are: Mgr Carmel Zammit.(President), Dr Raymond Bondin,Mr Wilfrid Buttigieg, Mgr Louis Camilleri, Dr Philip Farrugia Randon, Mgr Lawrence Mifsud.

From all friends and colleagues of The St John's Co-Cathedral Foundation, we thank him for the assiduous service he gave to this Cathedral, and we wish him a happy and restful retirement.

Outstanding performance!

#OnThisDay the knights celebrated with great pomp the Feast of the Epiphany, the biblical story when Jesus received gifts from the Three Kings. This was celebrated with a High Mass in the Chapel of the Epiphany of the langue of Allemande, where the titular painting represents the Epiphany.

For this feast, the portraits of the reigning Kings of the day – the Emperor and the Grand Master – were hung on each major pilaster of each arch, facing the nave of the Church. The portraits were finely draped with cloth of red silk damask, enriched with golden braid and tassels.
The Grand Master then walked amongst the congregation and then sat at his throne on the presbytery. This procession was led by the Grand Prior who later celebrated another Mass this time on the High Altar together with the Conventual Chaplains with great reverence and devotion. So popular was this Mass, that the congregation filled the church and poured on to the parvis.
