[07/02/21]   We’ll, this is my final weekend as pastor with these brilliant and lovely people. The last ten years have been a joy. Ups and downs, yes. But I’ve had the huge privilege of walking with you, in times of joy and sadness. That’s life together. So a massive thank you for allowing me to journey with you. God will continue to work out his purposes for you. Trust him as you have done. As St Paul says in Colossians 3:14, ‘Over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. ‘

Thought we might try something to encourage each other. How about posting an autumnal photo and bible verse, to share with each other? I’ll kick things off with this lovely picture of a tree. You Are My Strength - Hillsong Worship

Service Outline – Sunday 22nd March 2020 – Mother’s Day

Here is a short service you can follow at home. We are seeking ways of staying connected as God’s people on Sundays, even if not together physically. Please feel free to use this service, and if you are able to start at 11am, then we will, in effect, be church together as we follow the same order of service. May God richly bless you.

Welcome
We may not be all together today, but we are still the church. We welcome you to this new way of doing church, and invite you, along with our brothers and sisters, to worship together this morning.
We might be following this service as an individual, or as a couple or a family. May God bless you as you do.

Gathering for Worship – Rev 5:13
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:
‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honour and glory and power,
for ever and ever!’

Mothering Sunday
Today is Mother’s Day – when we celebrate mothers and all they do. If you’re a mother, then give yourself a pat on the back, and make sure others do some of the hard work today, and you get time with your feet up!
For some, Mother’s Day may bring sadness, with memories of lost loved ones or of loved ones we never came to know. Our hearts go out to you. Spend a few moments in quiet, remembering God’s love for you and those you have loved too.
Mother’s Day originated as a church celebration when people dispersed to other places and worshipping in distant churches returned home to their ‘Mother’ church and returned to their own mothers too. In a real sense, we’re dispersed today, but worship as one ‘church’.
Prayers:
Give God thanks for our mothers, and for all those who’ve nurtured and cared for us.
Please spend a moment giving thanks for mothers everywhere, and pray especially at this time for all NHS staff (especially those we know) and others working in a caring capacity, for energy and patience, and that they might know God’s presence and peace at this time.

Song
You might wish to watch this YouTube song and even join in. Matt Redman – ‘O No You Never Let Go’.

Reading & Reflection
We are going through unprecedented times. We can’t meet for worship but we can still be the church!
We are a people who can know for ourselves the love of God shown in the death of Jesus for us on the cross. And we can know joy and hope because God raised Jesus to new life, life promised to all who put their trust in Him.
In these uncertain times God offers us his peace. We don’t need to panic, get anxious, or fear the future, because we have a God who knows the future, loves us, and is Sovereign over it.
Be encouraged as you read this Psalm 46 and reflect on God’s call to be still and recognise Him as Lord.
Psalm 46
1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]
4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.
5 God is within her, she will not fall;
God will help her at break of day.
6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.
7 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
8 Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
9 He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.’
11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Claim the gift of God’s peace; rest in it.

Prayers to close
‘There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.'
These are troubled times
Times of violence and hatred in a world marred by war
Times of anxiety and uncertainty in a world wounded by greed
Times of sadness and loss in a world of vulnerability and finitude
Times when we must face tough questions with unpalatable answers

'Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no ill, for you are with me, your rod and your staff they comfort me.'

These are dark times
Times when we need to be reminded that God is with us
To guide our feet, one step at a time
To illumine our minds with new understanding
To protect us from despair, isolation and emptiness
To enable us to ‘prove’ our faith in resilience and fortitude

'Now the dwelling of God is with human beings, and he will be with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'

These are, mysteriously, hopeful times
Times in which the promises of a faithful God offer encouragement
Times in which new possibilities can be glimpsed
Times in which we must live the hope of eternity
Times when past, present and future meet.

So, let us profess our faith:
We believe and trust in God, creator of all, whose promises are faithful
We believe and trust in Jesus Christ, who redeems all, and who calls us to follow
We believe and trust in the Holy Spirit, who inspires and sustains us in hopeful service

Faithful God, as a community of your people, we commit to walk with you, individually and corporately, in these days.

Grant us courage to face the challenges
Strengthen us with faith, hope and love
So that we may walk faithfully in the footsteps of him whose name we bear

Christ, our Lord.
Amen

Blessing to close (from the NT book of Jude)
Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy – 25 to the only God our Saviour be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and for evermore!
Amen.
