On Saturday morning we will ring our annual Advent Peal. Since the mid-17th century it has been traditional to ring a Peal on the Minster Bells at the start of Advent. A Peal is a complex piece where we change the order of the bells until every possible permutation of the bell order is rung. The first round would be 12345, and the second may be 21354, with each bell changing no more than one position in the order. Each ringer follows a set sequence of place changes called a method. On Saturday we will be ringing a method called Grandsire Caters, the first 9 bells change order but the 10 stays in 10th place. There are 362,880 different ways to order 9 bells (9!) at 2.5s per round it takes 250 hours to ring them all. For practicality we will only ring 7! changes (5040) taking 3.5 hours. Each bell will be rung by one person without a break, no two bells will strike at the same time and each round will be different. If you are in town on Saturday morning, we hope that you enjoy our annual tradition.

Recruitment update As you are aware since Geoff Walsh retired in August, 2018, we have had a vacancy for a part time clergy post. Our neighbours in Uplyme and Axmouth have also been carrying a part time vacancy since their vicar left. A team of representatives from each of our eight churches has worked together to draw up the documents for this appointment to the team

One of the many benefits of the recent combination of the two areas is that we now have a whole-time vacancy and have therefore advertised for a new priest to join us. The advert has been placed on the Diocesan website, and the Axe Valley Mission Community website and from January 3rd an advert will appear weekly in the Church Times for four weeks. The closing date for applications is January 27th and interviews with the Bishop will take place on February 11th.

The job title is Priest in Charge of Axmouth and Uplyme and Team Vicar designate across the AVMC with specific responsibility for developing work with young people, children and families. The new person will work alongside Clive and play an active part in the rotas etc. Please pray for some good candidates to apply!

Due to the heavy rain the church roof developed a leak this morning, which meant that we had to close up for today for safety purposes. The Minster church will be open again tomorrow for everyone and to enjoy the Christmas Tree Festival x

🎶 What a fabulous #Puccini/Elgar concert it was on Saturday. Fantastic soloists, orchestra and audience. Judy Martin, our conductor did a great job with her usual enthousiam and energy. Special thanks to Peter Parshall our MD and Peter Lea-Cox our accompanist for their tireless help during rehearsals.

There was a very special young person in the audience... Harriet Mountford, our regular Soprano soloist had travelled specially to support us and brought her beautiful 10 week old daughter, who was not in the least fazed by the occasion! Could this be our youngest audience member? 🎶

Our Christingle Service will be held on Sunday 24th November. Christingle craft and banner making workshop will commence from 3.00pm, followed by the Service itself at 4.00pm. This will be a café-church style service with a talk, songs and refreshments. This will be a family-friendly service for all ages x

As part of training this year, Tracey will run a four–week course. Advent lends itself beautifully. The course will run on four consecutive Monday evenings from 25th November 19.30 –2 1.15, (NB the first session will begin at 19.45), and will meet in the side-chapel in the Minster Church. There will be eight spaces on a first–come, first–served basis. The course is not the usual Bible study, but one that encourages a different way of looking at the Advent Bible passages. Introductory notes will be given out on request, to see if the course is something you would like to participate in. If you would like to find out more, or book a place, please get in touch with me on 01297 33426 or [email protected]
