Avening Church

The Church of the Holy Cross, in Avening Gloucestershire is an active church with services at 11am every Sunday. The beautiful building dates back to 1080

Mission: The Church is where the people of Avening have brought their children to be baptised and married and also to lay their dead to rest, for nearly a thousand years. It is the focus of village community life and stands open for parishioners and visitors alike, to glorify God through prayer and meditation. Not only is our church a wonderful historical building, but we also are a church of people - a strong, vibrant community who gather to worship in this lively and friendly place.

Cherington Church

Dear Friends of Avening and Cherington churches.
I do hope all is going well for you and yours.
There is an online service on:
https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/14317/
and
https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/14319/
It will be of a different style from recent weeks and will include contributions from several local families: Barnett, Rayner, Fuller, Tudor, Forbes, Di Mauro: also a song from Georgina Leach (daughter of Marion and Guy) as well as the Avening Angels.
It is in three alternative forms:
Written – will contain much, but not all, of the wording of the service
Audio – all the service may be heard (as for previous weeks)
Visual – with words and pictures on the screen to accompany the service. This is a Powerpoint file so may not be accessible for everyone, depending on whether you have Powerpoint on your device. Having clicked DOWNLOAD you may have to click ‘Open’ (probably at bottom of your screen) – and possibly on a red Powerpoint icon also.

Very best wishes
Gerald

If you would be willing to do a reading, lead intercessions or contribute musically to future services please do get in touch with Gerald.
Gerald is hoping there will be an all age service before long with a lot of input from the younger generation – again please let Gerald know if you and/or your family would contribute.

[03/30/20]   At 11.00 on Tuesday 31st March Jim Hill will kindly be playing some hymns from the Avening Churchyard. Stop, pause a while, listen and enjoy. Sing along!

Such a great thing to do.

Thank you to everyone who’s contributed to the Cafe’s roadside plant swap - and especially to Elizabeth Buchanan for setting it up. Over £56 has been raised so far for the Cafe’s charities, The Mark Townsend Trust and the Stroud Women’s Refuge. Plenty of flower and veg seeds, and a selection of plants left - so get gardening, and share those spares!

Message from Rev Gerald South

Dear people of Avening and Cherington churches
I do hope that you and yours are coping as well as possible.
We cannot gather together for the time being but our churches are still active worshipping communities. The service which would have taken place tomorrow may be seen at these websites and you may like to pray through it, perhaps at the time when they would have been taking place.

Avening Church:
www.achurchnearyou.com/church/14317/

Cherington Church: www.achurchnearyou.com/church/14319/

I am hoping that there will be audio versions of parts of the these services also on the websites so that you may hear rather thanjust read.

I know that the Cherington community is keeping in touch with each other and in Avening there are neighbourhood groups offering support, church members making regular phone calls to particular people – also I have a list of those villagers who have offered a wide range of support so please let me know if you are aware of any emergency needs that are not being met.

The Foodbank box is now in the porch of Avening church should you wish to donate while on your isolated exercise.

You remain in my thoughts and prayers
Gerald

It was lovely to have Avening Primary school visit us. Don’t forget, 4pm Christmas Eve for our famous Nativity Service!

Term ended with a magical Christingle Service at Holy Cross Church, telling the Christmas story through readings and song. Thank you to Avening alumni from SWR for joining us, to Mr Dillon for accompanying the carols on the organ and to Rev Gerald for his blessings. On returning to school, we had a very special visitor... Happy Christmas to all our Avening friends and wishing you all the very best wishes for 2020. 🎄⭐️

Avening and Cherington, young and older came together to remember this morning.
The congregation made an Act or Commitment. “Let is pledge ourselves anew to the service of God and our fellow men; that we may help, encourage and comfort others, and support those working for the relief of the needy and for the peace and welfare of the nations.”
Gerald’s sermon reminded us that, with an election approaching, Winston Churchill said “No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms”. We have an obligation to use our vote carefully to reflect on how we can use democracy to help make the world a better place, and put the needs of others more needy than us before ourselves. It seemed appropriate when remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to help ensure a peaceful, democratic Europe.

[11/10/19]   Remembrance Service today. Remember we start at 10.45 this morning. See you all soon. ⛪️✝️

We worked hard on getting that Advent feeling: church looks beautiful this morning! Children’s Christmas party is on today, 3 till 5. But do take care and take no unnecessary risks on your way here.

Sunday, December 3rd, was Advent Sunday. In the evening, a group from Avening took a bus to Gloucester Cathedral for the Advent Evensong, a magnificent service in that beautiful space. It's the first time we have done this, and we all felt we would love to do it again next year. Thank you, Derrick, for organising us. Photos by Lynne Mowles and Sandra Ireland.
