Avening Church

The Church of the Holy Cross, in Avening Gloucestershire is an active church with services at 11am every Sunday. The beautiful building dates back to 1080

Mission: The Church is where the people of Avening have brought their children to be baptised and married and also to lay their dead to rest, for nearly a thousand years. It is the focus of village community life and stands open for parishioners and visitors alike, to glorify God through prayer and meditation. Not only is our church a wonderful historical building, but we also are a church of people - a strong, vibrant community who gather to worship in this lively and friendly place.

Our Community Cafe has some great special events over the next month.

Nearly June - where is the year going? It's our first Green Cafe next week, and later in the month we're off (or not) to the races! Also...a big GOOD LUCK for all those doing exams this month - and to all those sharing homes with them :-)

A Great Day out!

Only a few hours till our amazing big brekkie! 8.30-10.30, we look forward to seeing you there!

We worked hard on getting that Advent feeling: church looks beautiful this morning! Children’s Christmas party is on today, 3 till 5. But do take care and take no unnecessary risks on your way here.

Sunday, December 3rd, was Advent Sunday. In the evening, a group from Avening took a bus to Gloucester Cathedral for the Advent Evensong, a magnificent service in that beautiful space. It's the first time we have done this, and we all felt we would love to do it again next year. Thank you, Derrick, for organising us. Photos by Lynne Mowles and Sandra Ireland.

Remembrance Sunday. The service in Avening Church on November 12th will begin at 10:45; the silence is at 11am. After the service we will gather at the Millennium Cross in the churchyard for the laying of wreaths. There is still an opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of your family or group. Contact Derrick on 07762 702982.

[11/01/17]   At the 11am service on Sunday, November 5th, we will be able to remember our departed loved ones with a candle. Everyone is welcome. There will be a Sunday School for the children.

Rev Gerald celebrated his first day as our new priest by walking the bounds of the parish today. Despite the mud and tall grass, he strode the footpaths and was ahead of schedule by coffee time this morning.

Rev Gerald celebrated his first day as our new priest by walking the bounds of the parish today. Despite the mud and tall grass, he strode the footpaths and was ahead of schedule by coffee time this morning.

An Invitation from Gerald South, our new priest.
"Next Tuesday, 10th October, will be my first day as priest for Avening and Cherington. To mark the occasion, I am intending to walk the parish bounds – as far as that is reasonably possible. The plan is:
8.00 am Morning prayers at Holy Cross, Avening
8.20 am Walk the Avening bounds anticlockwise
12.15 pm (ish!) Lunch at the Trouble House
1.00 pm Walk the Cherington bounds anticlockwise
5.00 pm Evening prayers at St Nicholas Cherington
I would be very pleased to have some company for all or some of these parts of the day.
By then I shall be rather thirsty and will be in the Bell at about 7.30 pm - again I would be delighted to be joined by others.
For further details please give me a ring – 01453 834884"

Meet our new priest -Gerald South, and his wife Jennie.
Gerald and his wife Jennie grew up in Reading. They attended the same youth club and church where they were married. They now have a son and a daughter and five grandsons. Gerald graduated from Oxford in Theoretical Physics and gained a PhD from London University before working as a research fellow. He then moved into school teaching which he found very rewarding, teaching at Bradfield College, Crypt School in Gloucester and at Trinity School in Croydon where he was Head of Mathematics and Director of Studies. He trained part time for ordination and became a deacon in 2009 and a priest the following year. Since then he has been a non-stipendiary priest in his local team of churches. His hobbies include gardening and golf.
Jennie trained at the Froebel Institute in Roehampton and having taught at three primary schools, became headteacher at the local village school. She has enjoyed activities in her community and church and, like Gerald, enjoys gardening.
Gerald will be licensed as the priest for Avening and Cherington on 9th October and both he and Jennie very much look forward to becoming a part of the Avening and Cherington communities.
Do make a date in your diary and come and welcome them on 9th October!
