Alva Baptist Church

It's all about God's heart for the people of Alva and the wider Hillfoots community, not the building.

Called out into the public square to live openly as followers of Jesus Christ. "devoted to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers."

Mission: making disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; teaching these new disciples to actually follow Jesus' instructions.

Metaphor...

That's the new splashbacks in the kitchen. Looking forward to Holiday Lunch Club in July! (15-19th, 11-1pm) #lunchclub #giftsatwork #teamwork

Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs

Following-on from our discussion of Ephesians 5:21-33. Here is a link to a really helpful and even-handed approach to the subject of mutual submission, of men and women to each other, in marriage.

google.com Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs was written in 2004 by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs. The book suggests a direct connection between the emotional needs of men and women and a verse of scripture found in the Bible, that when adhered to, can strengthen and transform...

His Sermons Roused a Sleeping Church: J.C. Ryle (1816–1900)

“Oh, let not one of us linger! Time does not — death does not — judgment does not — the devil does not — the world does not. Neither let the children of God linger.”

Tomorrow marks the 119th anniversary of the death of J.C. Ryle. Read a short biography of the man who brought power back into England’s pulpits.

desiringgod.org J.C. Ryle cared little for Victorian formality and religious ritual. He cared for Christ and the souls of people. He preached the truth untamed.

The serious problems with being a Red-letter Christian

This popped-up in the fb feed today. It seemed appropriate to post this here after a reference to 'Red Letter Christians' in the sermon last Sunday. It is useful to help inform your opinion.

psephizo.com 'Red-letter Christians' is a movement or network in the States (primarily) initiated by Tony Campolo with the support of Jim Wallis. Alongside Campolo, another main contributor is Shane Claiborne, a leader in the New Monasticism movement. The name of the movement comes from the practice in some Bibl

Deep roots make for lasting trees.

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me

to bring good news to the poor;

he has sent me
to bind up the brokenhearted,

to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

to proclaim the year of the Lord 's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God;

to comfort all who mourn;

to grant to those who mourn in Zion—

to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;

that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord ,

that He may be glorified." ~Isaiah 61:1‭-‬3

[05/03/19]   James wrote in chapter 2 verses 10-13 of his letter:
"For whoever keeps the whole law
but fails in one point
has become guilty of all of it.
For he who said, "Do not commit adultery,"
also said, "Do not murder."
If you do not commit adultery but do murder,
you have become a transgressor of the law.
So speak and so act
as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty.
For judgment is without mercy
to one who has shown no mercy.
Mercy triumphs over judgment."

Do you live this way?
Do you keep all of the rules?
Do you judge others where they fail,
and hope God will forgive you where you do.
"judgment is without mercy
to one who has shown no mercy"

We must genuinely seek reconciliation and forgive.
"Mercy triumphs over judgement"

God gets people through their messes
as they love others
(enemies, neighbours, fellow disciples, spouses)

[04/15/19]   "One Solitary Life"

He was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in still another village, where he worked in a carpenter’s shop until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher.

He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He did not go to college. He never visited a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of the things associated with greatness.
He had no credentials but himself.

He was only thirty three years of age when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away.
He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Nineteen centuries have come and gone and today he remains the central figure of the human race, and the leader of mankind’s progress.

All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man on this planet so much as that one solitary life.

[04/09/19]   Build a community of belief
I. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see what is good about your friend. Stay focused on seeing who they are and not what they do.
II. Tell your friend these things and honor them.
III. Ask if they sometimes doubt these things.
IV. Then ask if you can stand beside them each time the doubt comes and remind them of the truth.

You are building now a bond of friendship based on belief.

[03/20/19]   Prayer request from Cathcart Baptist Church:

We praise God for the expanding relationships that are developing across our community, through our community hub and a number of initiatives underway through the church. Please pray for our ‘Shed project’ which seeks to provide a ‘making space’ for people to be creative, build friendships and make a local difference in what is made, working alongside other creative green projects in the southside of Glasgow and in conjunction with our urban orchard
